| Abstract: | Phellodendron amurense Rupr.forests of northeast China are not very well knownfrom
ecological point of view. Natural regeneration,seedling growth,and dynamics of one of
theseforests are examined. Photosynthesis and respiration of individual trees,topographical
conditionsand environmental factors have been measured in plots established in l959 and l990
during a gen-eral stand survey.P. amurense has an excellent natural regeneration ability. In
the initial stages,species abundance and stand growth were very high,but after this a decline
occurred and most ofthe P. amurense died or were replaced by mesophillous plants,and
eventually a mixed forest builtup.The ecological characteristics of cold-and shade-intolerance
in P. amurense are such that it cannot maintain,in the long- run,its dominance in the forest and
can not widely colonize lower moun-tain slope due to temperature inversion conditions. |
