Abstract:The relative contents of both hexose and pentose in decayed products decreased with increase of incubation duration(24N H_2SO_4 hydrolyzable). It showed that carbohydrate was more susceptible to biodegradation than other organic components. From the amount of sugar released by hydrolysis with 24N H_2SO_4 and with 1N H_2SO_4, it was found that after 3 years of incubation, a considerable portion of carbohydrate in the decayed products was in the form of"cellulose" coming from plant materials. The hexose/pentose ratio(1N H_2SO_4 hydrolyzable) of the decayed products in the circumstances in which they were formed always increased with incubation course. The facts indicated that most of pentose originated from plant material while hexose from both plant materials and microbial biosynthetics. Compared with those formed under upland conditions, the decayed products formed under submerged conditions had higher relative contents of both hexose and total neutral sugar(1N H_2SO_4 hydrolyzable).
