Interaction between h-bentonite and basic aluminum salts

Abstract:H-Al-clays and Al-clays with adsorbed Al3+ were obtained by treating H-clay with basic aluminum chlorides at different concentrations and OH/AL < 2 ratios. HAl(OH)n-clays and Al(OH)n-clays, on the contrary, were obtained by treating H-clay with basic aluminum chlorides with OH/Al > 2 ratios; further, the more concentrated the exchanging solution of basic aluminum chlorides, the more hydroxylated were the aluminum ions bound to the exchanger.The system HAl(OH)n-clay is unstable and tends to convert into a more stable aluminum clay system by neutralization between adsorbed basic aluminum and hydrogen ions.
