Abstract: | Thein vivo processes in simulated acid rain drops on leaf surfaces of selected crops were studied by means of a micro pH-electrode. Changes in pH were followed for 1 to 4 hr. Large differences among species in acid buffering ability and concentration due to evaporation were measured. Stressed plants showed markedly decreased buffering ability. Mathematical models suggested that the buffering mechanism was controlled by passive diffusion of leachates across the cuticle. Solid surface tensions of the leaves were determined indicating that buffering ability is related to polar forces in the cuticle. A model explaining the varying suceptibility to acid rain among plant species is proposed. |
