Sorption of Pb2 + by Chlorella Vulgaris and Biosorption Mechanism
Abstract:Biosorption of heavy metal is an effective technology for the trea tm ent of industrial wastewater. The sorption and biosorption mechanism of Pb2 by Chlorella vulgaris were studied to examine the possibility of metal bioaccumulat ion. The sorption profiles at various conditions including the effects of time, initial pH of solution, the state of Chlorella vulgaris, ionic strength and temp eratures were obtained. The results showed that the kinetics of sorption was rel atively fast, the sorption of Pb2 by Chlorella vulgaris involved two steps: rap id surface sorption and slow sorption. The initial pH of solution was the import ant factor affecting biosorption and the suitable pH was around 7. Dead cells co uld accumulate more Pb2 than fresh cells. The study also proved that ionic stren gth had inhibition effect on the sorption of Pb2 by Chlorella vulgaris, Pb2 bi oaccumulation benefited from the increasing of light intensity. It was found tha t the metal concentration sorbed by alga in solution at equilibrium obeyed the F reundlich equation very well, suggesting involvement of a multiplicity of mechan isms and sorption sites. This study implied the feasibility of large-scale appl ication for the treatment of Pb2 bearing industrial wastewater by the absorbent from Chlorella vulgaris.
