Abstract:Four experiments were carried out.
  • 1.(1) To investigate the drag of various lengths and widths of codend with the ends tied, open and blocked. Short, narrow codends were most affected by these changes in loading.
  • 2.(2) To investigate the effect on codend drag of using enveloping small-mesh covers. The drag of the covers was found to be the major factor.
  • 3.(3) To compare the drags of codends constructed from square- and diamond-mesh netting. Square-mesh codends had much greater drag.
  • 4.(4) To compare the drags of codends constructed from single and double twine. The measured drags were almost identical.
These findings are discussed. and it is argued that the main factors in codend drag are towing speed and netting surface area.
