Community Structure of Zooplankton and Its Relationship to Survivability of Yangtze Dolphin in Zhenjiang Yangtze Dolphin Nature Reserve, Jiangsu Province
Abstract:The Zhenjiang Yangtze Dolphin nature reserve in Jiangsu Province, as the rare excellent habitat for Yangtze Dolphin, is the only nature reserve along Yangtze River which has not been exploited for main channel. In order to understand the community structure of zooplankton in this area, seasonal investigation was performed through 2010 to 2011. The results showed that protozoa and rotifers took the dominant places, while the biomass of zooplankton lied on the cladocerans and the copepods. The species abundance, species diversity and biomass of Conservation Area 2 were much higher than other places. Seasonality of different members varied within zooplankton community. The breeding peaks of protozoa and rotifers appeared mainly in spring, while cladocerans and copepods in autumn. The diversity index of zooplankton peaked in summer and autumn, and bottomed out in winter. Through comparing the seasonal variability of zooplankton in different sampling sites, the Main Channel being more disturbed showed more seasonality. Fish potential production estimation through zooplankton showed that food sources of Yangtze Dolphin were being threatened.
