Abstract:This paper analyzes the life history process of Korean pine ( Pinus koraiensis ) populations and the influencing factors in natural broadleaved Korean pine forests in the Xiao xing'an Mountains of northeast China. Four main life history stages of Korean pine are considered and their evolutionary and conservation aspects are discussed. Pollination and fertilization of Korean pine are mainly affected by weather conditions. Light intensity under the forest canopy is the key factor controlling the growth and survival of Korean pine seedlings. Periodic seed production and fluctuation of Korean pine might cause changes of rodents or other related animal populations. Squirrels have played a very important role in natural regeneration of the Korean pine populations, and animals are indispensable components of the broadleaved Korean pine forest ecosystems. Understanding the co evolutionary relationships of species in the forest ecosystem is very important for conservation of biodiversity and maintenance of ecosystem integrity. In conservation of the Korean pine population,we should not only protect the trees, but also protect the related animals,the habitats and the whole ecosystem.
