Abstract: | An egg incubator system specially designed to meet the requirements of Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus L., eggs is described. Compared to other pelagic marine fish eggs, halibut eggs are frequently found to be heavy and lacking in buoyancy in seawater incubators. The biological features of halibut eggs which explain the choice of system design are discussed. In addition to the biological requirements, the system described is designed to meet the demands of commercial hatcheries where handling of large egg masses with a minimum of labour is needed. The incubation method has proved by experience to give high survival rates throughout egg development. |
