Abstract:In order to exploit the repellents to brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens and attractants to the parasitoid Anagrus nilaparvatae, the behavioral responses of N. lugens and A. nilaparvatae to six plant essential oils were studied. Both N. lugens and A. nilaparvatae showed different responses to different essential oils. Moreover, the olfactory responses of the insects were concentration-dependent. The essential oils of Aquilaria sinensis, Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Houttuynia cordata significantly repelled female adults of N. lugens at the concentrations ranging from 100 to 5 000 mg/L, while the essential oils of Crataegus pinnatifida and Lonicera japonica significantly repelled N. lugens at all tested concentrations. The essential oils of C. pinnatifida (0.1 mg/L and 1 mg/L), A. sinensis (0.1 mg/L) and Syzygium aromaticum (1 mg/L) showed attraction to A. nilaparvatae. The high concentration of H. cordata (10 mg/L) showed repellent effect to A. nilaparvatae. The results indicated that plant essential oils could be exploited as behavior-modifying stimuli in push-pull strategy for the control of N. lugens.
