Abstract:The primary productivity of phytoplankton was surveyed in Laojianghe Lake, Hubei Province from June, 1991 to April, 1993. The results showed that the gross primary productivity of phytoplankton in the water reached(O2) 1.56/gm-2d-1 in average during the time of investigation and (O2) 2.17/gm-2d-1 in average during the period from April to October, 1992. The potential annual production of silver and bighead carps may be 132.9 t. Temperature, transparency, inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus are the major limiting factors for primary productivity in Laojianghe Lake.
