Abstract:Since late 1970''s the kernel smut of rice caused by Neovossia horrida became more popular and severe particularly on the male sterile line in seed-producing fields for hybrid rice. The causal organism was hibernated both on seed and in soil. After harvest there would be 1666.5-12499.5 chlamydospores per gram of surface soil were observed in infested fields whereas in infested seed-producing field for hybrid rice there were as high as 48121.2-109367.3 chlamydospores per gram of surface soil. The accumulation of chlamydospores in the soil led to increase of incidence year by year. Tests indicated that the fungal penetrated through florescence. The differences of disease incidence between varieties were related to the duration of flowering period. The longer the duration of flowering period was the severer the disease occured. Experiments showed that seed selection with 10% salt water or muddy water resulted in 93.24% and 80.42% control effective respectively. Spraying 25% Bavistin(MBC) at early and maximum flowering periods also demonstrated good control effects.
