| Abstract: | The high country in Western Guizhou Plateau is one of the major sheep farming areas in south China, but the current levels of pasture utilization and animal production are much lower than their potential. One of the major problems for that is the limiting effects of the current grazing system, in which the lambing time is in winter so that the pasture supply dose not meet the animal requirements closely, and the efficiency and outputs of the system are limited. Shifting the lambing date from winter to spring will lead to a better balance between feed supply and requirements in each season of the year, higher carrying capacity, efficient utilization of pasture, and greater flexibility of management. Therefore, the costs of management will decrease and the output from the sheep system will increase. |
