Abstract: | A systems approach has been advocated as being useful to a wide range of areas of enquiry. It is suggested that the planning of human activities is the area in which such an approach is most valuable. The aims and objectives of an education in systems for persons involved in planning are discussed, with particular reference to the Open University systems courses. These course teach a range of techniques for producing and using simplified models of reality, for handling risk and uncertainty and for identifying human factors which affect system performance. They also include understanding a number of concepts concerned with the general properties of systems. Students are encouraged to adopt a systems methodology for the structuring of real problems, although the choice of such a methodology appears to present problems. Other problems in teaching this approach are also discussed. |
