Abstract:The annual processes of some main water parameters: Bulk-averaged osmotic pres-sure at full water saturation (π_0), Bulk-averaged osmotic pressure when the turgor initiallyreaches 0(π_p), Relative osmotic water content to π_p(ROWCπp), Relative water content toΠp(RWCΠp) of small branches of young and adult trees of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica,P. tabulaeformis, Platycladus orientalis, Juniperus rigida, Picea meyeri, Ulmus pumila andPopulus cathayana were continouuslly measured by using the Pressure-Volume techniquefor three years. it has been found out that there is a close relation between the annualchanges in the water parameters and the tree's annual growth period, and that the maximaand minima in the annual changes can be used as the main physiological indexes to evaluateand compare the dry resistance of the trees. The trees with comparativelly smaller values ofπ_p, ROWCπp, RWCπp, have higher physiological features of dry resistance. The statisticalanalyses of the data of the individuals of the above six species of young trees indicate thatunder similar conditions, the above water parameters of the individuals of the same species(by 95% reliability test method) have no obvious differences. These water parameters canbe used as physiological indexes to evaluate and to compare the drought enduranoe of dif-ferent species of trees. The study has proved under the same soil conditions in field, themethod of irrigation in different steps was adopted to control soil water content. The rela-tion between the morning water potential and the soil water content formed a line(y=A+BX) and a steep curve line (y=Ae~(-BX)) When the water content in the soil is higher,the morning water polential changes along with the slight changes of the soil water conent,that is a flat line correcation. When the soil water content declined to a certain degree, evena small water content change may lead to the change of morning leaf water potential, there-fore, it shows a curve correlation. The point of intersection of the two lines on the samecoordinate is called "critical point". The critical point keeps the morning leaf potential in astate, it can lead the potential to a sharp decline as well. The critical points of different spe-cies of trees match their own soil water contents. This reflects the differences in drought en- durances of trees. It can be regarded as a index to compare the dry resistance of trees. It canbe also used to determine the time and water amount of irrigation. This paper studied the re-lation between transpiration rates, leaf water potential and the environmental factors of theyoung trees of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, P. tabulae formis, Juniperus rigida,Platycladus orientalis, Picea meyeri, Ulmus pumila, Populus cathayana, P. x. Beijingensisand Salix matsudana, and how the transpiration rates are influenced by the environmentalfactors (soil water moisture, temperature, light and water deficits), and the differences ofself-adjustment of the trees. Under water stress condition, the relation between leaf waterpotential and transpiration rates shows a line correlation, if the line slopes are greater, thetrees self adjust of transpiration rate is weak and with low dry resistance. It is a valuable in-dex to compare dry resistance of different species of trees. Through synthetical evaluations and comparisons, a list in order is paid out to showthe different dry resistance of the main species for the afforestation in arid and semi-arid re-gions in Inner Mongolia, it goes like this (from strong to weak): Platycladus orientalis,Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, P. tabulaeformis, Juniperus rigida, Ulmus pumila, Populuscathayana, P. x. Beijingensis and Salix matsudana.
