Abstract:This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of cellulase and xylanase on fermentation quality of elephant grass ( Pennisetum purpureum Schumach. ) silages during ensiling. Chopped elephant grass were ensiled in laboratory mini-silos either untreated ( control) or treated with cellulase (500 or 250 mg·kg~(-1) ) ,cellulase (250 mg·kg~(-1)) plus xylanase (250 mg· kg~(-1)) ,xylanase (500 or 250 mg·kg~(-1) ) ,respectively. Triplicate silos for each treatment were opened at 2,4,6,8, 15 and 30 days of ensiling with room temperature and analyzed for chemical characteristics. The enzyme treatments enhanced significantly production of lactic acid (P<0. 01) and water soluble carbohydrate (P<0.01) of silages, and reduced rapidly the pH value (P< 0. 01) compared with control. The contents of ammonia nitrogen in the enzymes treated silages, except for cellulase plus xylanase treated, was lower than in the untreated silage (P<0. 05 ). The contents of acetic acid were of no difference in all silages (P> 0. 05). The results suggested that the cellulase and xylanase improved the fermentation quality of elephant grass silage during ensiling.
