Abstract:Biological experiments,in which a sequential extraction procedure was adopted to fractionate various As forms,were carried out to study the availability of soil As to plants and to evaluate the efficiency of different extractants,i.e.0.5 mol/1 NaHCO_3(pH 8.5),1.0 mol/1 NH_4Cl and 1.0 mol/l HCl.The As forms available to plants varied with soil type. Al-As exchangeable and water soluble As appeared available to plants in calcareous soils while in noncalcareous soils Fe-As and Al-As were.Of the three extractants studied,only NaHCO_3proved to be able to remove the As fractions available to plants.It is suggested that 0.5 mol/l NaHCO_3can be used as a satisfactory and universal extractant for assessing available soil As.
