New Advance of Soil and Water Conservation Work in the Yellow River Basin |

| Abstract: | Severe soil loss in the Loess Plateau of the Yellow River is main cause leading deteriorate of regional eec-environment, backwardness of economy development, poverty of people's lives and siltation in lower Yellow River. Soil and water conservation work of several decaies has played an important role in improving rural production and life condition, developing regional economy and impoving eec-environment. By the end of 1995, the soil loss area put under control had added up to 150 thousand km2 in the Yellow River basin, in which basic farmland increased 4000 thousand ha, forestland 7330 thousand ha, grassland 2000 thousand ha, damland silted behind silt-arresters 330 thousand ha. The grain output and economic income increased up to 53. 8 billion. kg and 18. 8 billion yuan seperately through implementation of comprehensive soil and water conservation measures, average annual sediment entering the Yellow River was reduced about 300 million t. |
