Feed represents the greatest single cost factor in the production of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). Focusing on the problem of maximising the available feed for the fish while minimising the feed waste, a mathematical model of the feeding process has been developed. The model covers the feed spreader delivering the feed, water currents, pellet sinking speed and turbulent diffusion, fish appetite as a function of temperature, gut fullness and population structure, and is intended as a tool both for optimising general feeding strategies, and to support the daily handling of the feeding process. The process of horizontal and vertical diffusion of feed pellets in the model has been parametrised and validated through two low level validation experiments. Furthermore, global distribution patterns simulated by the model were verified by comparisons with experimental data from the literature.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal feed distribution in sea cages are important factors for the farmer, fish and environment due to the strong relation to growth, feed loss, pollution and welfare. This study presents a set of experimentally derived diffusion parameters and settling rates obtained in still water from four sizes and three densities of extruded fish feed pellets commonly used in aquaculture. It was found that pellet size is positively correlated with increased diffusion and that pellet density plays a less important role. Both the size and density of pellets had a significant impact on the settling rate. Results are compared to values obtained during feed production as well as other relevant studies. The findings suggest that parameters related to hydrodynamic behaviour of groups of feed pellets may vary across different pellet types. The results may be applied to refine and parameterize pellet motion in sea cage feeding models, improving estimates of fish behaviour, growth and feed loss.  相似文献

Rotary feed spreaders are extensively used in large scale fish aquaculture and are tasked with distributing pelletized feed in a spatially uniform manner over the water surface. Questions have been raised with respect to the performance of classical spreader designs regarding the size and uniformity of the covered area as well as their inability to adapt to changing environmental conditions. This study presents a robotic model of rotary spreaders with experimental validations. Classic rotary spreaders are simulated as well as two alternative designs in the form of a spreader releasing pellets at an optimal initial ballistic angle and a motorized version to increase throw length and provide a more spatially homogeneous surface feed distribution. The alternative designs both yielded improved surface coverage without the need of higher conveying airspeed which may lead to increased pellet attrition. In addition, the motorized design may be used to position pellets at a given location within the sea cage, such as into the wind and current so that pellets can reside inside the sea cage for a prolonged period of time. The presented model may be of interest to researchers and equipment manufacturers who desire to explore performance of a given spreader design.  相似文献

Abstract. The spatial distribution of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in sea cages was observed by echo integration, which measured fish density at seven in depth intervals. At start of feeding the fish swam towards the surface and into the centre of the cage with a subsequent movement downwards and towards the periphery as hunger was reduced. These changes were more rapid at high than at low feeding intensities. The downward migration during feeding was primarily observed as a reduction in fish density in the 0–1 m depth layer and an increase in the 2–3 m depth layer. For a given feeding intensity, the change in fish density in these depth layers was largely explained by time from the start of feeding and initial hunger level, measured as food intake to satiation. The feeding regime also influenced vertical distribution outside feeding periods. Fish that were fed at low intensity swam generally closer to the surface, and this tendency was even stronger when a restricted food ration kept hunger level constantly high. While fish density peaked at a single depth interval at full ration, a bimodal vertical distribution was observed at restricted ration, suggesting that different subgroups of fish had different feeding motivations. The results suggest that the vertical distribution of salmon in sea cages is based on a trade-off between attraction to food and avoidance of the surface. This tendency has been exploited in a new method of demand feeding in commercial farming of Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Intensive aquaculture, especially the production of carnivorous species requires artificial feeding. Marine proteins are preferred to vegetable proteins, since fishmeal and oil provide the essential nutrients required by farmed fish. Given the stagnant production of industrial species and the rapid increase in aquaculture production, fishmeal availability would pose a biological constraint on aquaculture contribution to world fish supplies in the future, unless alternative feed sources can be incorporated in diets. In this paper, the technical substitutability between fish and vegetable-based feeds for salmon and trout are assessed through the estimation of Morishima elasticities of substitution. These are derived from a meta-analysis production function based on a large number of published feed trials. The results suggest that vegetable oil may be a potential substitute for fish oil, particularly in salmon aquaculture, but fishmeal is likely to remain a necessary component of feed unless some new feed source can be developed.  相似文献

The culture of salmonids in the marine environment has led to concern regarding eutrophication of the water column and sediment from uneaten feed. This study used measurement of mass loss and change in carbon and nitrogen content of feed to quantify material lost from waste feed as a function of physical and biological variables. A laboratory flume was used to measure changes in cooked–extruded salmon feed pellets as a function of pellet size (6.5 and 12.0 mm in diameter), residence time in seawater (0, 24, 48, 72 and 120 h), and flow speed (0, 9.3 and 22.2 cm s?1). The influence of sediment on pellet degradation was also determined. Loss of pellet mass increased with water flow velocity. Smaller pellets eroded faster than larger pellets, losing 32% (6.5 mm) and 21% (12.0 mm) of their mass after 120 h in seawater. The presence of sediment during preconditioning increased the percentage mass loss of the small pellets only. The presence of sediment also resulted in a greater percentage loss of carbon, but not nitrogen, relative to non‐sediment samples. These results allow quantitative assessment of the dynamics of feed pellets in the marine environment with respect to prediction of impact from salmon culture.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the influences of feeding frequency of extruded pellet and moist pellet on growth and body composition of juvenile flounder (initial mean weight 6.3 g) in sub optimal water temperatures. A 2 (diets: extruded pellet and moist pellet)×2 (feeding frequencies: two and three times daily)×2 (water temperatures: 12 and 17°C) factorial design with three replications was used. After 60 days of feeding, the feeding frequency did not significantly affect growth performance of fish. Weight gain, daily feed intake, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were significantly (P<0.05) higher for fish reared at the higher water temperature. At the same water temperature, weight gain, feed efficiency, and protein efficiency ratio were significantly (P<0.05) higher for fish fed the extruded pellet than moist pellet. The results of this study indicate that feeding frequency of two times daily is sufficient for optimal growth of juvenile flounder when reared in suboptimal water temperatures, and an increase in water temperature from 12 to 17°C improved growth and feed efficiency.  相似文献

Fish farms may attract wild fish that feed on waste feed from the cages. Saithe, Pollachius virens L., are particularly numerous around salmon cages in northern Europe and may obtain a significant proportion of their diet from waste feed. It has been claimed that these fish are of inferior quality to saithe that feed on natural diets; differences are said to include soft muscle tissue and a different taste. In order to document such changes in quality we performed a feeding experiment. Young wild saithe were collected and fed either a lipid-rich salmon diet or a lean cod diet for 8 months. All fish were individually tagged and growth was monitored throughout the experiment. Parameters related to flesh quality were measured. Diet clearly influenced the growth rate of the fish, and many fish reached a very high hepatosomatic index when fed on a salmon diet. However, many fish had a low feed intake and thus a low rate of growth. There were some differences in skin and muscle colour, pH and in sensory parameters between wild-caught and artificially fed saithe at the end of the experiment. Those fed the cod diet were more similar to wild saithe than those fed the salmon diet.  相似文献

Under conditions of intensive culture, the acoustic signals produced by fish during feeding depend on their feeding mode. Exclusive suction, as used by turbot, is characterised by a maximum acoustic energy in the frequency range 7–9 kHz and a sound duration of about one minute depending of time duration of pellet distribution. Suction feeding in conjunction with forward swimming, as employed by brown trout and rainbow trout, had a maximum acoustic energy in the frequency range 4–6 kHz and feeding sounds were measurable only for short periods (less than 1 s) in between two pellet distributions by hand. The brevity of these feeding sounds (ca. 1000 ms) requires adapting the turbot acoustic-detection systems to actively feeding fish for developing automated feed distribution systems feasible in trout aquaculture.  相似文献

Two successive experiments were conducted in order to assess plasma free amino acid (FAA) profiles as a method for evaluating protein quality of fish feeds for Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar (L.). In experiment 1, the importance of meal size and inter‐fish variation was assessed by using dorsal aorta cannulated fish and diets that contained different sources of fishmeal (menhaden versus herring) which in the case of herring, had been dried at either 70 or 100 °C. In experiment 2, an attempt was made to mimic a production situation by comparing the FAA profiles in salmon fed diets containing two commercially available fishmeals that had been produced in accordance with industrial standards (Norse‐LT94® and NorSeaMink®; Norsildmel AL, Fyllingsdalen, Norway). FAA profiles in plasma 6 h after feeding were compared with feed true protein digestibility as determined in mink. Cannulated fish, held in individual tanks, were hand‐fed twice daily to pellet rejection (satiety) and daily records of the actual rations consumed were maintained. A total of 24 different amino acids and other amino‐containing compounds were detected using high‐pressure liquid chromatography. Morning and evening meal size showed significant correlations. Meal size had a significant effect on blood levels of the majority of essential free amino acids (EAA) as well as the total sum of FAA (TFAA). In experiment 1, a marked inter‐individual effect was found, possibly because of incipient sexual maturation. FAA profiles were therefore corrected for meal size by linear regression while repeated sampling via the permanently implanted cannula allowed paired comparisons of the different test diets, minimizing inter‐individual variation. Significant differences in plasma FAA profile, EAA and TFAA were detected between fish fed all diets in both experiments. The preceding parameters for fish ingesting each feed were directly related to their respective mink protein digestibility in experiment 1, but not in experiment 2. Our results show that dietary protein quality can be differentiated by the aforementioned protocol, and by using fish with a low metabolic rate feed qualities could be ranked correctly as in experiment 1.  相似文献

A factorial (3 × 4) feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding frequency and feed type on the growth performance, feed utilization and body proximate composition of juvenile olive flounder. Three feed types including a sinking moist pellet (MP), a sinking dry pellet (DP) and a floating extruded pellet (EP) were used. Fish (average weight, 11.1 ± 0.4 g) were randomly distributed in thirty‐six 300 L tanks in a flowthrough system. Triplicate groups (30 fish per tank) of fish were fed each feed type to visual satiation at three meals per day, two meals per day, one meal per day and one meal every 2 days for 7 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, the survival of fish was not significantly different among the treatments. Weight gain was affected by the feeding frequency. The highest weight gain was observed in fish fed the EP at three meals per day. The daily feed intake of fish fed the MP and DP tended to be higher than that of fish fed the EP at each feeding frequency. The feed efficiency and the protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the EP were higher than those of fish fed the MP and DP. The body proximate composition of fish was altered by the feeding frequency. The crude lipid content increased with the increase in the feeding frequency. The present findings suggest that three feedings per day at visual satiation of the floating EP may be sufficient for the maximal growth performance of olive flounder grown from 11 to 60 g.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feed intake on the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of astaxanthin including the major geometrical E/Z-isomers in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Atlantic salmon (50 per pen, initial weight 2 kg) were kept in 125 m3 sea pens equipped with an excess feed collection system to monitor and quantify accurate feed intake, and subjected to three treatments in triplicate. All salmon were fed the same diet supplemented with 47 mg astaxanthin per kg. Two treatments were fed full or restricted rations corresponding to 100 or 40% of apparent satiation, respectively, with a switch in ration between two consecutive feeding periods (14 and 3 d, respectively), whereas the control treatment was fed to 100% of apparent satiation during both periods. The corresponding feed intakes were 0.45 and 0.16% of biomass for salmon fed 100% or 40% of apparent satiation, respectively. Faeces were collected by stripping at the end of each feeding period and ADCs of astaxanthin were determined by an indirect method using yttrium oxide (Y2O3) as an indigestible marker. Feed intake and astaxanthin ADC were negatively correlated (R2 = 0.64; p = 0.0001). Astaxanthin ADC was 1.5 times higher at the low compared to the high ration level (p < 0.05), but due to the low feed intake the total amount of digested astaxanthin was only about 50% of that in fish fed to satiation. The ADCs of the all-E and 13Z-isomers of astaxanthin were similar and considerably higher than for 9Z-astaxanthin (p < 0.05). The amount of digested astaxanthin/TGC (estimated thermal growth coefficient) decreased with increasing feed intake. Estimates of astaxanthin retention indicated that a higher feed intake cause a lower muscle concentration of astaxanthin compared to that obtained at low feed intakes due to the lower digestibility. Blood samples were collected at the end of the second feeding period to examine possible relationships between plasma carotenoids, feed intake and ADC. Salmon without faeces in the hindgut had a lower plasma astaxanthin concentration compared to salmon with faeces in the hindgut (p < 0.05). In conclusion, feed intake and astaxanthin ADC are negatively correlated, and may thus explain reductions in muscle retention of Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Method for determining the physical stability of shrimp feeds in water   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Three methods for measuring the water stability and leaching characteristics of shrimp pelleted feeds were developed and tested: static water method, horizontal shaking method and vertical shaking method. Each method was tested using a commercial and experimental pelleted shrimp feed. Both feeds had a pellet size of 2.4 mm × 5.0 mm with similar proximate composition (35% protein and 9% fat). Each test run consisted of leaching c. 2 g of feed at six intervals of immersion time (0, 30, 60, 120, 240, 360 min), two concentrations of salinity (0, 34 ppt), and three different water temperatures (15, 25, 35 °C). A refrigerated circulating water bath was used to maintain the desired level of water temperature. For the static water and horizontal shaking methods, a Buchner filtration apparatus with Whatman filter paper no. 3 (5 μ) was used to separate the remaining pellets from leached water. The vertical shaking method (VanKel) utilized a perforated stainless‐steel basket (381 μ) for leaching and serving as a filter to separate pellets from leached water. For all three methods, the leached feed and original feed samples were dried in a convection oven at 105 °C for 24 h and then cooled in a desiccator. Dried feed samples were weighed and analysed for dry matter retention. Pellet stability was calculated as the ratio of dry matter retention after leaching and dry matter of original samples expressed as a percentage. Results indicated that any method for pellet stability analysis should take into account water temperature and salinity in addition to actual pellet agitation rate to obtain accurate and consistent measurement of pellet disintegration and nutrient leaching. Dry matter retention was different for each shrimp feed with experimental feed (72.8%) showing lower retention than commercial feed (88%) after 6 h of VanKel leaching under normal shrimp culture conditions. The three methods provided reproducible results with both horizontal and vertical shaking methods recommended for routine laboratory analysis because they could provide different degrees of pellet agitation that simulate actual indoor and outdoor shrimp culture conditions.  相似文献

A method for identifying and confirming the efficacy of feeding stimulants and deterrents is described. Feeding studies carried out using Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., have shown that the addition of squid extract as a stimulant to feeds may lead to modification of feed intake, and may ameliorate the negative effects of unpalatability when fish are presented with medicated diets.  相似文献

In salmonids, growth hormone (GH) stimulates growth, appetite and the ability to compete for food. This study tested the hypothesis that increased GH levels in GH-transgenic coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum) increase competitive ability through higher feeding motivation. The transgenic strain of salmon used contained a gene construct consisting of the sockeye metallothionein-B promoter fused to the type 1 growth gene coding region. The transgenic animals (mean size = 250 g) were F1 individuals. In six consecutive feeding trials, the intake of contested food pellets by size-matched pairs consisting of one control (1 year older non-transgenic coho salmon) and one GH-transgenic coho salmon was compared. Pellets were provided sequentially until neither fish took three consecutive pellets; the identity of the fish taking each pellet was noted. Calculated on the three first pellets offered at each feeding trial, the transgenic coho salmon consumed 2.5 times more contested pellets than the controls, supporting the hypothesis that GH transgenesis increases the ability to compete for food. Overall, the transgenic fish consumed 2.9 times more pellets that the non-transgenic controls, indicating a high feeding motivation of the transgenic fish throughout the feeding trials. It appears that GH transgenesis and GH treatments can induce similar changes in the feeding behaviour of salmonids. Depending on how transgenic and wild individuals differ in other fitness-related characters, escaped GH transgenic fish may compete successfully with native fish in the wild.  相似文献

Studying shrimp feeding behavior is challenging and, traditionally, studies have been using direct visual observation or video recordings with image analysis under laboratory conditions. Passive acoustics monitoring (PAM) is a non-invasive approach to study feeding behavior of penaeids, as their mandibles emit clicking sounds during feed ingestion. Considering the wide variation available in shrimp diet lengths, our knowledge is still limited about their effects on feeding behavior. The present study was designed to use acoustics to evaluate the feeding behavior of Litopenaeus vannamei fed different diet lengths. A commercial pelleted diet with similar diameter (2.4 mm) and three different lengths was used as treatments “small” (2.35 mm), “medium” (4.26 mm) and “large” (8.42 mm). Three separate trials were performed with fastened shrimp (20 g), using omnidirectional hydrophones and external audio recorders. Our approach started with the characterization of the click acoustic parameters produced by three shrimps when fed the different diet lengths in anechoic chambers (15 L). We then analyze the number of clicks produced per pellet and duration of the clicking activity when shrimp fed a single pellet in individual tanks (1 L). Finally, the acoustic energy of feeding activity and feed consumption, as well as theirs relationship to predict feed intake was evaluated in aquaria (70 L) with five shrimps. The acoustic parameters of isolated clicks were not affected by the different diet lengths, however, doubling the length of the pellet resulted in doubling the number of clicks emitted during feeding activity. The duration of clicking activity per pellet indicated that small pellets are consumed 2.9 and 4.7 times faster than medium and large pellets, respectively. Furthermore, feeding acoustic energy of small pellets decreased rapidly after feed offer, as their faster consumption probably contributed to shrimps achieved satiety earlier than larger diets. Feed consumption was similar among diets length, but significantly correlated with the feeding acoustic energy emitted by L. vannamei, which is a breakthrough in feeding behavioral research. The results highlight the potential and possibilities of an acoustic approach to estimate feed consumption, as well as an alternative to traditional methods in feeding behavioral studies to improve efficiency of feed management.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon were fed extruded diets based on either 100% fish oil (FO) or 100% vegetable oil blend (VO) substitution for 22 months. A total of seven distinct feeding periods were studied that incorporated higher levels of dietary oil inclusion, and larger pellet size as fish size increased. Whole fish levels of polychlorinated dibenzo‐p‐dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) and dioxin‐like PCBs (DLPCB) were analysed at the beginning and end of each of the seven feeding periods. The PCDD/F and DLPCB concentrations in the FO diets increased from 2.43 to 4.74 ng WHO‐TEQ kg?1 (TEQ, toxic equivalents), while VO diets decreased from 1.07 to 0.33 WHO‐TEQ kg?1 as oil inclusion increased. Partial least square regression analyses identified feed concentration, growth rate and feed utilization, but not variations in lipid content, as factors significantly affecting fish PCDD/F and DLPCB levels. Accumulation efficiencies for DLPCB (740 ± 90 g kg?1) were significantly (P < 0.01) higher than for PCDD/F (430 ± 60 g kg?1), explaining the increasing dominance of DLPCB levels over PCDD/F levels in whole fish (DLPCB : PCDD/F ratio of 2.4 ± 0.1 for both VO and FO fed fish) compared with feed (DLPCB : PCDD/F ratio of 1.5 and 0.34 for FO and VO feed respectively). Vegetable oil substitution significantly reduced the level of PCDD/F and DLPCB (eightfold and twelve‐fold, respectively) in the fillet of a 2 kg salmon, but, also negatively affected beneficial health components such as fillet n‐3/n‐6 fatty acid ratio.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate effects of feed processing conditions and potassium diformate (KDF) supplementation on apparent digestibility of nutrients in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and physical quality of extruded feed. In Exp. 1, diets with raw or expander pretreated full‐fat soybean meal (FFSBM) at 100 or 120 °C were extruded at 110 °C. Expander pretreatment significantly (P < 0.05) improved the digestibility of arginine, glutamine and tyrosine in Atlantic salmon. The higher digestibility of expander pretreated FFSBM was confirmed in mink (Mustela vison). In Exp. 2, diets with defatted soybean meal (SBM) were extruded at 110, 130 or 150 °C. The results showed that increasing extrusion temperatures significantly (P < 0.05) improved the digestibility of most major nutrients and amino acids in Atlantic salmon. In general, KDF supplementation to FFSBM and SBM diets did not affect digestibility of nutrients in Atlantic salmon or mink. Expander pretreatment and increasing extrusion temperatures increased pellet expansion, while KDF supplementation reduced pellet expansion.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in sea cages exhibit feeding patterns that vary both diurnally and seasonally. Hitherto, there are no data reporting feed rate and its variation through a complete annual cycle. Here we present data from Scotland showing diurnal and interseasonal variation in feeding patterns and feeding rates of Atlantic salmon fed daily to satiation from shortly after transfer to seawater until harvest about 11 months later. A major feeding peak regularly occurred soon after dawn, and feeding rates remained high for approximately one hour. Over the remainder of the day, the fish fed at a lower but steady rate. Relative feed intake varied over the trial, being initially high in summer followed by a sharp decline in autumn, and then further declining until fish reached harvest size at the beginning of the following summer. Further investigations of the relationship between variation in circannual feeding patterns and environmental parameters should now be carried out to improve the understanding of the mechanism behind these patterns.  相似文献
