Abstract –  A segment of the Shibetsu River was restored to reconstruct the ecological condition of the previously canalized river stretch to a more natural, meandering state. In this study, we investigated the upstream migration of chum salmon ( Oncorhynchus keta ) using radio transmitters to track the horizontal position of fish and data loggers to detect the vertical swimming depth of fish, simultaneously. The monitored salmon travelled near the bottom of the water column and along the riverbanks, and tended to hold in deep, slow current areas in the canalized river. In the restored segment, the fish swam at more shallow depths and against stronger currents. Although the three tracked fish all reached the confluent point and chose to enter the restored segment, they did not remain in the segment for long. This indicates that the restored area facilitates the upward migration of the chum salmon.  相似文献

Managing the spread and impact of invasive species requires an understanding of what limits their dispersal into new areas. Here, we investigated an intrinsic component of invasive species dispersal, via assessments of the swimming speed performance of four species of alien freshwater fish at risk of invading the upper reaches of a montane river system in south‐east Australia. Using water flow measurements taken from a range of potential barriers to their upstream dispersal (fishways, culverts, natural riffle habitats), we assessed the likelihood of alien species passage based on intrinsic differences in swimming speed performance. With the four alien fish species displaying a wide range of sprint swimming speed (Usprint) capabilities, our logistic regression analysis identified pipe culverts as being a challenge to dispersal by all but the largest individuals of one species (Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss). Notably, fishway installations facilitating passage of the sympatric threatened species, Macquarie perch (Macquaria australasica), could allow upstream dispersal of a key threatening species (European perch, Perca fluviatilis). Our study highlights the utility of locomotor capabilities for assessing the likelihood of upstream dispersal by species following human‐assisted introductions to the lower parts of a catchment.  相似文献

Using a salmon migration model based on the assumption that swimming orientation is temperature dependent, we investigated the determining factors of the migration of juvenile and immature chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in the North Pacific. We compared the predictions of the model with catch data of immature and juvenile chum salmon collected by Japanese research vessels from 1972 to 1999. The salmon migration model reproduced the observed distributions of immature chum salmon and indicates that passive transport by wind‐driven and geostrophic currents plays an important role in the eastward migration of Asian salmon. These factors result in a non‐symmetric distribution of Asian and North American chum salmon in the open ocean. The directional swimming component contributes to the northward migration in summer. The model results indicate that during the first winter Asian chum salmon swim northward against the southward wind‐driven currents to stay in the western North Pacific. This suggests that Asian chum salmon require more energy to migrate than other stocks during the first winter of their ocean life.  相似文献

Abstract – Two different Denil fishways on the Grand River, Ontario, were used as check-points to evaluate the upstream movement of fishes past a low-head weir and to examine the proportions and inferred swimming performance of non-salmonid warmwater fishes that used each fishway type. Traps installed at fishway exits were used to collect fish during 24-hour sampling periods, over 40–51 days each year, from 1995 to 1997. Passage rates, size selectivity, water temperature, water velocity and turbidity for the periods of maximum passage for each year were examined. General species composition from trap samples shifted from catostomids to cyprinids to ictalurids to percids and centrarchids, with some overlap, as water temperatures increased from 8 °C to 25 °C in the spring and early summer. Water depths, and therefore water velocities in each fishway, were independent of river discharge due to variable accumulations of debris on upstream trash-racks. Relationships between the water velocity and the swimming and position-holding abilities of several species emerged. Turbidity was directly related to river discharge and precipitation events, and many species demonstrated maximum fishway use during periods of increased turbidity. This study 1) provided evidence of strongly directional upstream movements among several species that were previously considered non-migratory and 2) describes physical and hydraulic conditions during fishway use for 29 non-salmonid fish species.  相似文献

Upstream selective movement of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), which were captured in the Osaru River, Hokkaido, Japan, in late spawning season, was investigated in a two-choice test tank consisted of two water inlet arms and one pool. Artificial home stream water that was prepared based on the compositions of amino acids and related substances of the Osaru River, and natural lake water flowed in each arm. Of 44 chum salmon tested, 28 fish showed upstream movement to one of the choice arm, and 24 fish (85.7%) of those moved fish were found in the arm running the artificial home stream water. When the artificial home stream water flowed from the left and right arms, 88.9% and 80% of fish were observed in the left and right arms, respectively. These results strongly support our hypothesis that amino acids dissolved in stream waters are home stream substances for salmon homing.  相似文献

The involvement of testosterone (T), estradiol-17β (E2), 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnene-3-one (DHP), luteinizing hormone (LH), thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3) in the regulation of downstream and upstream movement (swimming behavior) was investigated in land-locked sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka, using an artificial raceway. During the downstream migratory period, T implant resulted in high plasma T levels and inhibited the occurrence of downstream swimming behavior (negative rheotaxis) in yearling (1+) immature smolts. In terms of upstream behavior, 2-year-old (2+) males exhibited high plasma T and 11-KT levels, while 2+ females had elevated T and DHP levels. In 1+ immature fish, a T implant induced upstream swimming behavior (positive rheotaxis). In experiments 1 and 3, the plasma T4 and T3 levels of non-migrants tended to be higher than those of migrants. In contrast, no marked changes in plasma and pituitary LH were found in both downstream and upstream migrants. These results suggest that sex steroids, such as T, play significant roles in the regulation of downstream and upstream swimming behaviors in land-locked sockeye salmon.  相似文献

Telemetry is a useful technique for elucidating salmon behavior, but the recovery periods before fish can be safely released after the attachment of telemetry devices have not yet been established. Reported recovery times vary widely, from 2 h to 13 days. We examined how anesthesia and surgery to attach external electromyogram (EMG) transmitters affected chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) recovery based on three physiological parameters. Fish subjected to anesthesia plus EMG transmitter attachment (EMG group), anesthesia only (AO group), and no handling (control) were placed in a swim tunnel. Critical swimming speed (U crit), oxygen consumption (MO2), and muscle activity (EMG values) were assessed 0, 1, 6, 12, 24, and 30 h after treatment. The MO2 in the EMG and AO groups was higher than in the control group 1 h after treatment, but did not differ significantly from the control in all subsequent trials (from 6 to 30 h after treatment). Values for U crit and EMG were not significantly different from the control group in any of the trials conducted 1–30 h after treatment. We concluded that chum salmon had regained their normal swimming ability by 6 h after treatment and could be safely released into the natural environment.  相似文献

Common off-flavor compounds, including geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), bioaccumulate in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar cultured in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) resulting in earthy and musty taints that are unacceptable to consumers. To remediate off-flavor from market-ready salmon, RAS facilities generally relocate fish to separate finishing systems where feed is withheld and makeup water with very low to nondetectable GSM and MIB levels is rapidly exchanged, a process known as depuration. Several procedural aspects that affect salmon metabolism and the associated rate of off-flavor elimination, however, have not been fully evaluated. To this end, a study was carried out to assess the effects of swimming speed and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on GSM levels in water and fish flesh during a 10-day depuration period. Atlantic salmon (5–8 kg) originally cultured in a semi-commercial-scale RAS (150 m3 tank) were exposed to a concentrated GSM bath before being transferred to 12 replicated partial reuse depuration systems (5.4 m3 total volume). Two swimming speeds (0.3 and 0.6 body lengths/sec) and two DO levels (90% and 100% O2 saturation) were applied using a 2 × 2 factorial design (N = 3), and each system was operated with a 5-h hydraulic retention time, creating a water flushing to biomass ratio of 151 L/kg fish biomass/day. Geosmin was assessed at Days 0, 3, 6, and 10 in system water and salmon flesh. A borderline effect (P = 0.064; 0.068) of swimming speed was measured for water and fish, respectively, at Day 3, where slightly lower GSM was associated with low swimming speed (0.3 body lengths/sec); however, differences were not detected at Days 6 or 10 when salmon are commonly removed for slaughter. Overall, this research indicates that significant improvements in GSM depuration from RAS-produced Atlantic salmon are not expected when purging with swimming speeds and DO concentrations similar to those tested during this trial.  相似文献

Many fish passes have been built across the world in recent years. This study analyses the performance of a modified type of pool and weir fishway with two access branches, using passive integrated transponder telemetry. A circum‐Mediterranean barbel, Luciobarbus bocagei (Steindachner, 1864), was chosen as the target species. Both hydraulic values (flow and volumetric energy dissipation) and biological parameters (attraction, entrance and passage success) were measured in the fishway, these being related to the environmental variables affecting upstream fish movement. Flow discharge, water temperature and atmospheric pressure were important for fish entering the fishway. There was no preference between path routes, even though the main discharge was concentrated in the turbine channel. This type of fishway design could be an alternative for the conservation of fish populations where multiple fish approach options are possible.  相似文献

Abstract Using underwater cameras, data were collected on the feeding behaviour and swimming speeds of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L., gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata L. and European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax L. in sea cages. Comparisons were made between the behaviours of fish fed on demand using interactive feedback systems and those of fish fed under the standard feeding practice of each farm (control). In all three species, swimming speeds were similar before feeding , but they were significantly higher in the control regimes during feeding. When fed on demand, sea bass had reduced swimming speed just before and during feeding compared with that observed during the non‐feeding periods. Higher proportions of feeding fish were observed in the control regime cages than in fish fed on demand for all three species, indicating a greater feeding intensity during meals in the control regimes. This was further supported by observations of an increase in the density of sea bass in the upper water in the control cages during feeding. The results suggest decreased levels of competition between the on demand‐fed fish during feeding, which might be hypothesized to lead to improved growth and production efficiency in aquaculture.  相似文献

Three‐dimensional distribution of adult upstream‐migrating Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., was studied in three power plant tailrace channels on the large, regulated River Kemijoki in northern Finland using novel pressure sensor radio telemetry. The salmon swam mostly at depths of 1–4 m below the surface, with the salmon‐specific averages ranging from 1.3 to 6.4 m. When approaching a power plant, no change in swimming depth was observed. The horizontal locations of salmon in the two regularly shaped tailrace channels peaked at 5–10 m distance from the shoreline and showed a positively skewed distribution with a tail towards the central part of the tailrace. A graphical presentation of salmon locations in the tailrace channel and data on swimming depth and distance from the shoreline may prove useful in determining the location and design of a fishway entrance and in dimensioning attraction flow.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical techniques using an antiserum to cod somatolactin (SL) demonstrated the presence of SL cells in the intermediate lobe of the pituitary in Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. The cells were small in yearling fish. Two groups of maturing fish were studied. In the spring run salmon collected in April and May during the upstream migration, the SL cells appeared stimulated. In September, during spawning, SL cell stimulation was maximal with indices of hypertrophy and degranulation often more marked in females than in males. In the other group, salmon of the fall run collected in the Pacific Ocean in August had well developed gonads, large gonadotropes and abundant SL cells. In spawning salmon (September) the SL cells were stimulated, mainly in females. However, the final stimulation was less intense than in spring run spawning fish. The SL cells were smaller, without evident granule release, but still abundant in spent salmon of the fall run caught at the end of November. Various factors (time spent in rivers before spawning, starvation, decalcification, stress, hypothalamic influences) were considered which might explain differences between spring and fall run salmon. These observations suggest that SL may play a role in the control of gonadal maturation in chinook salmon as it may also do in sockeye and chum salmon previously studied, and that SL cells may be sensitive to the ambient salinity.

The number and the size of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., using the Isohaara fishway was elevated by increasing the fishway discharge and by changing the type of the pass entrance. The fishway is intended to help fish bypass a hydroelectric station located close to the mouth of the large, regulated River Kemijoki, in northern Finland. Multi-sea-winter (MSW) salmon returned to the river mouth during peak flows in early June but did not use the fishway until 1 month later. Their number in the fishway was positively correlated with the tailwater level. One-sea winter (1-SW) salmon, which arrived approximately one month later, started to enter the fishway without corresponding delays. In autumn, a high tailwater level and a small drop at the fish entrance seemed to be needed for the successful passage of these small-sized salmon and sea trout, Salmo trutta L.  相似文献

Do secondary sexual traits, such as large dorsal hump and hooked snout, decrease the swimming efficiency of male pink salmon during freshwater migration? This is the first study to address the effects of secondary sexual traits in pink salmon on oxygen uptake and swimming capacity. We conducted a laboratory experiment using a swimming respirometer and a field study using electromyogram (EMG) telemetry in the Shibetsu River, Hokkaido, Japan. We compared the relationship between MO2 (mg O2·kg?1·h?1) and swimming velocity U (m·s?1) in male and female fish, and also investigated the effects of morphological traits (secondary sexual characters) on the relationship between MO2 (mg O2·kg?1·h?1) and swimming velocity U (m·s?1). Additionally, we compared energy costs and swimming behaviour during upstream migration between male and female pink salmon. The laboratory experiment revealed that MO2 exponentially increased with increasing U; this increase was described by MO2 = 167.9e1.23U for males and 144.9e1.14U for females. Linear mixed models found that hump height and the upper jaw length in males significantly and positively affected the relationship between MO2 and U; no effect was found in females. The field study found that swimming velocity for both sexes estimated from EMG calibration was lower than optimal swimming velocity (Uopt) calculated from the laboratory experiment. We suggest that pink salmon in the Shibetsu River do not swim at the optimal swimming velocity because of the short migration distance involved (20 km).  相似文献

Abstract This study aimed to develop and test an electrode array for a resistivity fish counter that could be easily installed in a small river without a weir. An electrode array consisting of three steel cables laid in parallel across the stream channel and connected to a microprocessor-based counter was tested in an Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., spawning tributary. The accuracy of the counter was assessed by observing fish movements with closed-circuit television. Most salmon moving upstream were registered correctly (90% overall). Detection of downstream movement was less reliable (60% overall), as a consequence of downstream swimming behaviour. The accuracy of the downstream count was improved by tensioning the cable electrodes, but remained lower than that of the upstream count. Since salmon swam repeatedly up- and downstream, this discrepancy resulted in an overestimate of the net upstream count. The accuracy of the downstream count needs to be improved before a bed-mounted electrode array could be used for routine salmon counting.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   In order to investigate the changes in rhodopsin-porphyropsin ratio of chum salmon and pink salmon in relation to the change in their habitat, the ratios were analyzed in individual fish prior to stocking, during the sea run, homing, and upstream migration. The ratio in both the species gradually increased during the sea run. However, the ratio decreased after upstream river migration. Moreover, in the sea, the rhodopsin-porphyropsin ratio of chum salmon was always slightly higher than that of pink salmon. The largest difference in the individual variation was observed in the individuals caught with a set net placed near the mouth of a home river.  相似文献

Seasonal variations and reaction norms for vertebral number (V N) in response to incubation water temperature were estimated in adult and juvenile naturally spawning chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta. The mean V N of adults varied according to spawning time; the early-spawning population had higher V N values than the late-spawning population. Moreover, the mean V N values in the early-spawning population decreased with seasonal changes, whereas V N values in the late-spawning population remained stable. Chum salmon embryos in three full-sib families were incubated at five different temperatures until hatching, and the V N values of the resulting juveniles were analyzed. The V N reaction norm to incubation water temperature showed a V-shaped curve that was lowest at an intermediate temperature. The mean V N at the same incubation temperature varied among the three families. These results suggest that V N values in chum salmon are influenced by genetic components and incubation water temperatures. V N may be a useful parameter for estimating the environmental conditions during ontogenesis and the genetic background by detecting population changes.  相似文献

Hatcheries release >4.5 billion juvenile Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) into the North Pacific Ocean annually, raising concerns about competition with wild salmon populations. We used retrospective scale analysis to investigate how the growth of chum salmon (Oketa) from western Alaska is affected by the abundance of chum salmon from Japanese hatcheries and wild pink salmon (Ogorbuscha) from the Russian Far East. Over nearly five decades, the growth of Kuskokwim River chum salmon was negatively correlated with the abundance of Japanese hatchery chum salmon after accounting for the effects of sex and spring/summer sea‐surface temperature in the Bering Sea. An effect of wild eastern Kamchatka pink salmon abundance on the growth of Kuskokwim River salmon was detectable but modest compared to the intraspecific competitive effect. A decrease in Japanese hatchery chum salmon releases in 2011–2013 was not associated with increased growth of Bering Sea chum salmon. However, the abundance of wild chum salmon from the Russian Far East increased during that time, possibly obscuring reduced competition with hatchery chum salmon. Our results support previous evidence that chum salmon are affected by intraspecific competition, and to a lesser extent interspecific competition, in the North Pacific, underscoring that the effects of salmon hatchery production transcend national boundaries.  相似文献

The spawning migration travel times of chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta (Walbaum), fitted with gastrically implanted radio tags vs external spaghetti tags were tested for a short [≈60 river km (rkm)] and long migration route (≈730 rkm) on the Koyukuk River, Alaska, USA. Using a novel application of statistical arrival curve models to infer travel times for uncaptured fish, migrations by chum salmon not directly handled during the study were also assessed. Results demonstrated negligible differences in travel times within migration routes between fish fitted only with spaghetti tags and fish fitted with radio tags, indicating low impacts on migration travel behaviour associated with gastric tags once deployed. Conversely, travel times for unhandled fish as inferred by statistical arrival models may have been 12%–24% shorter than those for fish captured with gillnets for tagging. These results suggest that, if present, chum salmon migration behaviour impacts may be more strongly associated with fish capture than tag deployment.  相似文献
