An 8-week feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different dietary macronutrient level and feeding frequency on the growth, feed utilization, and body composition of juvenile rockfish. Triplicate groups of fish (body weight of 4.1 g) were fed the experimental diets containing either high levels of carbohydrate (HC, 35%), lipid (HL, 13%), or protein (HP, 55%) at different feeding frequencies (twice daily, once daily, and once every 2 days). Weight gain was affected by feeding frequency but not by dietary composition. Weight gain of fish fed the diets once every 2 days was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that of other groups. Daily feed intake and energy intake were affected by both dietary composition and feeding frequency. Daily feed intake of fish fed the HC diet was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of fish fed the HL and HP diets at the same feeding frequency. Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were affected by both dietary composition and feeding frequency and decreased with increasing feeding frequency in the same dietary composition. Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the HC diet were significantly (P < 0.05) lower than those of fish fed the HL diet at the same feeding frequency. Whole-body lipid content of fish fed the HL diet was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of fish fed the HC and HP diets at the same feeding frequency. These results indicate that an increase of dietary lipid level compared with dietary carbohydrate level may have the advantage of a protein-sparing effect at same feeding frequency, and a once-daily feeding regime is more effective than twice daily or one feeding every 2 days to improve growth performance of juvenile rockfish grown from 4 to 21 g.

A factorial (3 × 4) feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding frequency and feed type on the growth performance, feed utilization and body proximate composition of juvenile olive flounder. Three feed types including a sinking moist pellet (MP), a sinking dry pellet (DP) and a floating extruded pellet (EP) were used. Fish (average weight, 11.1 ± 0.4 g) were randomly distributed in thirty‐six 300 L tanks in a flowthrough system. Triplicate groups (30 fish per tank) of fish were fed each feed type to visual satiation at three meals per day, two meals per day, one meal per day and one meal every 2 days for 7 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, the survival of fish was not significantly different among the treatments. Weight gain was affected by the feeding frequency. The highest weight gain was observed in fish fed the EP at three meals per day. The daily feed intake of fish fed the MP and DP tended to be higher than that of fish fed the EP at each feeding frequency. The feed efficiency and the protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the EP were higher than those of fish fed the MP and DP. The body proximate composition of fish was altered by the feeding frequency. The crude lipid content increased with the increase in the feeding frequency. The present findings suggest that three feedings per day at visual satiation of the floating EP may be sufficient for the maximal growth performance of olive flounder grown from 11 to 60 g.

Abstract

In an effort to feed sunshine bass (Morone chrysops X M. saxatilis) efficiently, promote optimal growth, and reduce labor costs associated with feeding, sunshine bass were fed one of four feeding schedules: once per day, twice per day, once every other day, and twice every other day for 10 weeks. Ten fish were stocked into each of sixteen 110-L aquaria with four replications per treatment. At the conclusion of the feeding trial, percentage weight gain of sunshine bass fed twice/day were significantly (P < 0.05) higher (342%) compared to fish fed all other feeding frequencies. Specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed twice/day was significantly higher (1.85%/day) compared to fish fed once every other day (0.69%/day) and twice every other day (1.18%/day) but not different (P > 0.05) from fish fed once/day (1.51%/day). The amount of diet consumed by fish fed twice/day was significantly higher (119 g diet/fish) compared to fish fed all other feeding frequencies. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) of fish fed twice/day were significantly higher (1.50) compared to fish fed once/day (1.28) and once every other day (1.15) but not different (P > 0.05) from fish fed twice every other day (1.35). Percentage fillet weight of fish fed once/day and twice/day were significantly higher (20.3% and 21.2%, respectively) compared to fish fed once every other day (15.7%) but not different from fish fed twice every other day (18.8%). Percentage lipid in fillet was not significantly different among all other treatments and averaged 9.7%. Percentage protein in fillet of fish fed once every other day and twice every other day was significantly (P > 0.05) higher (90% and 82.1%, respectively) compared to fish fed once/day and twice/day (81.1% and 81.5%, respectively). Based upon data from the present study, it appears that producers growing small juvenile sunshine bass indoors should feed fish twice daily. This feeding regimen allows for higher growth rates, without adverse effects on body or fillet compositions.

Gastrointestinal and metabolic influences on short- and medium-term control of voluntary feed intake of European eel were investigated for groups of fish fed at different feeding schedules: 1 meal 2 days−1, 1 meal day−1, 2 meals day−1 and continuous feeding for 12 h and 24 h daily. For fish fed daily, the feeding schedule had no effect on feed intake, metabolism, growth, size variation and body composition. Only fish fed once every 2 days could not completely compensate by increasing their average meal size and showed a reduced feed intake, metabolism and growth. Stomach capacity did not limit meal size and feed intake as large differences in appetite were found for eels with empty stomachs. Feed intake was related to metabolism as the levels of O2 consumption and NH4 excretion just before the meal were correlated to average meal size, suggesting that rate (and duration) of metabolism is sensed and is providing information about the metabolic consequences of feed intake and feed processing. Meal size is based on the (expected) scope for metabolism and eels seem to strive to an average daily feed intake, associated with their developmental state (growth potential). Plasticity in this feed intake behaviour, expressed by individual variation in feed intake and day-to-day fluctuations in individual and group intake, is regarded as adaptive on different time scales.

A 6‐month feeding trial was conducted in field condition using 10 farm ponds (400–600 m2) to investigate the effect of mixed feeding schedules on the growth of sutchi catfish, Pangasius hypophthalmus with silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix. Fish were stocked at a ratio of 80:20 (sutchi catfish, 4.9±0.5 g: silver carp, 12.0±0.8 g) at the total rate of 25 000 ha?1. Two diets of high protein (30%, HP) and low protein (16%, LP) were prepared using locally available feed ingredients. Five different feeding schedules of high‐protein diet continuously (HP), low‐protein diet continuously (LP), 1‐day low–protein/1‐day high‐protein diet (1LP/1HP), 7 days low–protein/7 days high‐protein diet (7LP/7HP) and 14 days low–protein/14 days high‐protein diet (14LP/14HP) were tested. The fish were fed twice daily at the rate of 15%, 10%, 8% and 5% of their body weight for first, second, third month and rest of experimental period respectively. Feeding rate was calculated only on the basis of sutchi catfish weight only and was adjusted every 2 weeks according to weight gain. Fish fed LP and HP on alternate day (1LP/1HP) resulted in significantly (P<0.05) higher growth rate, feed utilization and production among the treatments. However, there were no significant differences (P>0.05) between the growth rates and production of fish fed HP regularly and fish fed 7 days LP followed by 7 days HP (7LP/7HP). Fish maintained on LP grew the least. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) values for sutchi catfish ranged between 2.04 and 2.79 with feeding schedule 1LP/1HP showing the best FCR. The total production of fish (including silver carp) ranged between 8310 and 12 422 kg ha?1 6 months?1 with 1LP/1HP feeding schedule resulting in the highest production and net profit. The study demonstrated that feeding fish continuously with HP is less economical. Thus, for profitable sutchi catfish culture with silver carp, farmers can use the mixed feeding schedule of alternate day feeding of LP and HP as a means of reducing feed costs.

Abstract. The applicability of mixed feeding schedules using low-and high-protein diets was evaluated by three on-farm field trials conducted in fertilized earthen ponds. Rohu, Labeo rohita (Hamilton), and common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., were used in the first two trials, and catla. Catla catla (Hamilton-Buchanan), was also included in the third trial. The concept of a mixed feeding schedule was tested using a 1:1 rice bran-groundnut meal cake mixture, a commonly used feed in Indian carp culture.
In a mixed feeding schedule, two feeds are used alternately, each for a predetermined number of days. In the present study, one of three such mixed feeding schedules was used in conjunction with one of two control diets. The control diets were rice bran (diet A) or a mixture of rice bran-groundnut meal cake (diet B). The mixed feeding schedules tested were: 1A/1B, 1A/2B and 1A/3B (numerals indicate number of days diet A or B was offered continuously). Diet A (rice bran only) induced significantly poor growth in all treatments. Interestingly, growth in the mixed feeding schedules was generally equal or superior to that when fish were fed with diet B. Growth efficiency indicators such as SGR. FCR and PER were found to be good for fish maintained on certain mixed schedules. Savings of 15–31% protein and 10–20% of the feed cost were achieved with the various schedules, the highest saving being achieved with the 1A/1B schedule. Nitrogen retention was higher in fish treated with mixed schedules. The results demonstrated the usefulness of mixed schedules in reducing nitrogen input, output and feed costs.

The effects of feeding frequency (1, 2, 3, or 15 times daily) on oxygen consumption (OC, mg O2 kg−1 h−1) and ammonia excretion, (AE, mg TAN kg−1 h−1) of walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) are described. Walleye were reared at a practical culture density of 35·4 kg m−3 in a single-pass system at 23·2°C. Diurnal variation in metabolic rates were related to feeding, not to photoperiod. Minimum OC rates occurred 30 min before the first feeding of the day, which was the longest average time since the last feeding. Metabolic rates increased immediately after feeding. The maximum rates for OC were 36–49% higher than the minimum rates, and 14–22% higher than the 24-h mean rate. Maximum rates for AE were 137–409% higher than the minimum rates, and 39–87% higher than the mean rates. There was a highly significant difference in the mean metabolic rates related to feeding frequency. The mean OC rate for 1 feeding day−1 (222·0 mg O2 kg−1 h−1) was greater than the mean rates for 2, 3 and 15 feedings day−1. The OC rate for 1 feeding day−1 was 50·6% greater than the rate for 15 feedings day−1 (147·4 mg O2 kg−1 h−1), the lowest mean rate. Mean and maximum oxygen/feed ratio (OFR, kg O2 kg−1 feed fed day−1), varied inversely with feeding frequency. The mean ammonia/feed ratio (AFR) was similar for all but the 3 feedings day−1 treatment, but the maximum AFRs for 2 and 15 feedings day−1 were lower than the AFRs for 1 and 3 feedings day−1. AE was directly proportional to OC; the regression equations were highly significant, but specific for feeding frequency.

An 8 weeks growth study was conducted to estimate the optimal feeding rate for juvenile grass carp (3.08±0.03 g, mean ± SD). Fish were fed with a casein purified diet (360 g protein, 56 g lipid and 3000 kcal total energy/kg dry diet) at six feeding rates: 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5% body weight per day (BW d−1). Each feeding rate was randomly assigned to three tanks of fish with 30 fish per tank (50W × 50H × 100L, cm). Fish were maintained in recirculating systems at a water temperature of 24.97±2.23 °C and were fed four times per day. After 2 weeks, fish fed on 3.5% BW d−1 could not finish the diet and this treatment was cut-off. Analysis of variance showed that growth performance was significantly (p<0.05) affected by different feeding rates. The nutrient compositions of whole body, muscle and liver were also significantly different among treatments. The body weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed efficiency (FE), protein efficiency ratio (PER), apparent digestibility coefficiency (ADC), retention of protein (PR), mesenteric fat index, body moisture and protein content were significantly (p<0.05) affected by feeding rate. The WG, SGR and digestion rate were highest at 2% BW d−1, although the FE and PER decreased with increasing feeding rate. Broken line analysis on specific growth rate indicated that the optimum feeding rate of juvenile grass carp is 1.97% body weight day−1.

Abstract.— In an effort to feed sunshine bass Morone chrysops × M. saxatilis efficiently, promote optimal growth, and reduce labor costs associated with feeding, sunshine bass were grown in cages and fed one of four feeding frequencies: once/d, twice/d, once every other day (I X/EOD), and twice every other day (2X/EOD) for 21 wk. Juvenile sunshine bass were fed a commercial floating diet containing 40% protein and 11.5% lipid. One hundred fish were hand-counted and stocked into each of 12 3.5-m3 cages with three replications per treatment. At the conclusion of the study, percentage weight gain of sunshine bass fed twice/d was significantly (P < 0.05) higher (1,850%) compared to fish fed all other feeding frequencies. Specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed twice/d was significantly higher (2.1%/d) compared to fish fed all other feeding regimes, while fish fed once/d had a higher SGR (2.0%/d) compared to fish fed I X/EOD (1.6%/d) and 2X/EOD (1.8%/d). Percentage survival was not significantly different (P > 0.05) among all treatments and averaged 70.4%r. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) of fish fed twice/d was significantly higher (2.40) compared to fish fed all other feeding regimes. Percentage fillet weight of fish fed twice/d was significantly higher (27.8%) compared to all other treatments. Percentage moisture, protein, lipid, and ash in fillet were not significantly different among all treatments and averaged 75.7%, 19.4%, 3.5%, and 1.2%n, respectively (wet-weight basis). Based upon data from the present study, it appears that producers growing juvenile sunshine bass in cages may want to feed fish twice daily. This feeding regimen allows for higher growth rates, without adverse effects on body or fillet compositions. However, economic analysis needs to be conducted to determine if feeding twice/d is profitable.

A factorial (2 × 4) feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding frequency and partial replacement of fish meal (FM) with soybean meal (SBM) on the growth performance, feed utilization and body proximate composition of juvenile Chinese sucker. Two feed types including replacement of 30% FM (diet 1) with SBM (diet 2) were used. Triplicate groups of fish (average weight, 11.80 ± 0.19 g) were fed each feed type to visual satiation at four meals per day, three meals per day, two meals per day and one meal per day for 8 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, the survival of fish was not significantly different among the treatments. Weight gain was affected by the feeding frequency. The highest weight gain was observed in fish fed with diet 1 at three meals per day. There existed a significant difference in daily feed intake (DFI), daily protein intake (DPI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) when the feeding frequency was increased from one or two to three or four meals per day (< 0.001), but not by the feed types. For both two feed types, the highest DFI and DPI were observed at three meals per day. The highest PER was gained at four meals per day, while FCR was the least. The body proximate composition of fish was altered by feeding frequency. The crude lipid content increased with the increase in feeding frequency. Essential amino acids (EAAs) content showed no significant differences among different treatments. The present findings suggest that three feedings per day at visual satiation may be sufficient for the maximal growth performance of Chinese sucker grown from 11 to 45 g. Results also indicate that about 30% of FM protein can be replaced by SBM protein in Chinese sucker diets without adversely affecting growth.

Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of feeding frequency on growth, and of handling stress on growth and mortality, in intensive tank culture of the walking catfish Clarias fuscus . In the first experiment, fish were grown from an initial weight of 37 g for 34 d. A fixed ration of 3.0% body weight per day was divided into either 1, 2, or 3 feedings per day, and fish were either handled weekly or left unhandled for the entire experiment. Fish given 3 feedings per day experienced 19% faster growth ( P < 0.05) than fish given the same ration in a single feeding per day. These differences in growth reflect differences in assimilation efficiency, assuming all other metabolic costs were constant among treatments. Handling of individuals caused decreased growth; however, there was no effect on mortality.
In the second experiment, fish were grown from an initial weight of 78 g for 29 d. Fish were fed either 1 or 2 satiation feedings per day and were either handled weekly or left unhandled for the entire experiment. Fish fed 2 satiation feedings per day experienced 47% faster growth ( P < 0.05) than fish fed 1 satiation feeding per day, which was assumed to reflect a higher level of food consumption. No effect of handling on either growth or mortality was observed for fish in experiment 2. Multiple meals per day also reduced depensatory growth among individuals in both experiments.

Abstract The efficacy of restrictive feeding regimes and Romet®-medicated feed (formulated at 40.5-mg Romet-30 premix/kg feed) fed at 2.0% body weight was evaluated under field trial conditions for the treatment of naturally induced Edwardsiella ictaluri infections in fingerling channel catfish. After detection of an Edwardsiella ictaluri epizootic, fish were fed medicated and non-medicated feed every day, every other day and every third day for the duration of the experiment. In addition, experimental treatments also included fish that were completely withheld from feed and those provided Romet-medicated feed for five consecutive days followed by non-medicated feed fed daily. Feeding frequency and diet significantly affected survival and weight gain. Survival was greatest among fish that were completely withheld from feed or that were fed medicated feed every other or every third day. The use of non-medicated feed every other or every third day was equally as effective for reducing Edwardsiella ictaluri associated mortalities as feeding Romet-medicated feed on a daily basis. Feeding fish Romet-medicated feed for five consecutive days was not an effective treatment. Agglutinating antibody titers against Edwardsiella ictaluri were significantly lower in all groups of fish fed Romet-medicated feed for the duration of the experiment. These data indicate that feeding frequency is a primary factor affecting the severity of Edwardsiella ictaluri infection and that prolonged consumption of Romet-medicated feed may suppress antibody production.

Juvenile, 1-g Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier) were fed two different diets: one with fish meal and another with soya meal as the main dietary protein source. Both diets were provided at ad libitum feeding level, and at two restricted feeding levels of ~ 80% and 60% of the ad libitum level. The experiment was performed in 30 aquaria, each stocked with 12 fish. For each treatment (two diets X three feeding levels), there were five replicates. Fish were fed three times daily at 0900, 1300 and 1700 h. At sampling days (days 14, 29, 44) in each aquarium in one of these feedings, chromic-oxide-marked feed was used. Shortly after the last meal, fish were weighed and four fish were taken from each aquarium for determination of the chromic oxide content in their digestive tract. Fish fed the fish meal diet attained a higher weight but had a lower body protein content. At the ad libitum feeding level, feed intake of the fish meal diet was higher, but feed and protein utilization efficiency were lower than with the soya diet. However, statistical analysis of the data of both the ad libitum and the two restricted feeding levels revealed that the reduced voluntary feed intake of the soya diet was the cause of its better utilization with ad libitum feeding. There is no evidence that soya protein is more freely available than fish meal protein. The chromic oxide data showed that 15 min after feeding, all of the feed (99.8%) could be traced back in fish fed the lowest feeding level, while at the ad libitum feeding level the recovery was only 72%. These data confirmed the hypothesis that at high feeding levels, considerable amounts of feed remain uneaten. Feed losses were not significantly different between the two diets. The chromic oxide recovery data of the 0900 h and 1300 h feedings showed that the feed passage rate in the digestive tract was similar for the three different feeding levels. Due to the high feed losses at high feeding levels, the relation between feed ration and feed utilization is determined mainly by the percentage of feed losses at the different feed rations.

A two (dietary energy levels; low energy, LE and high energy, HE) × 4 (feeding frequency; one feeding in 2 days, one feeding daily, two times daily and three times daily) factorial experiment was performed to determine the effects of dietary energy level and/or feeding frequency on the growth and body composition of juvenile flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. The survival rate was not significantly different among treatments. Weight gain of fish fed the LE and HE diets significantly increased as feeding frequency increased. The weight gain of fish fed the LE diet was higher at each level of increasing feeding frequency. The weight gain of fish fed the HE diet was higher than that of fish fed the LE diet once in 2 days and once daily, but weight gain of fish fed the HE diet was lower than the LE diet three times daily. Daily feed intake was significantly influenced by feeding frequency, but not by dietary energy level. Feed efficiency of fish fed the HE diet once daily was significantly higher than that of fish fed the LE diet once in 2 days, but no significant difference in feed efficiency was observed among other groups of fish. The protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the LE diet once in 2 days was the lowest. Feeding frequency and dietary energy level had a significant effect on the body lipid content. A feeding frequency of two times or three times daily would be effective, depending on dietary energy level for maximum growth of juvenile flounder grown from 3.5 to 15 g.

The effect of feeding frequency (one, three, and continuous feeding), feed ration (0.2, 0.5, 0.8% of total fish biomass), and feeding per se on the oxygen consumption (OC, mg O2 kg−1 h−1) and ammonia excretion (AE, mg TAN kg−1 h−1) of juvenile tench (body weight 15–19 g) and variations in these parameters in daily cycles were examined. Fish metabolism was studied in a recirculating system (rearing tanks of 0.2 m3, water temperature 23 °C). It was found that oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion depended significantly on feed ration. An increase of feed ration from 0.2 to 0.8% of fish biomass caused an increase of OC and AE from 126.80 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 and 1.95 mg TAN kg−1 h−1 to 187.35 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 and 8.80 mg TAN kg−1 h−1 (p<0.05). There was no dependence between feeding frequency and the mean rate of oxygen consumption. However, the relationship between feeding frequency and ammonia excretion by juvenile tench was statistically significant (p<0.05). Feeding frequency significantly affected daily fluctuations of AE and OC. It was found that diurnal variations in metabolic rates were strictly related to tench feeding, and the daily variations of AE were significantly higher than OC.

A 6‐wk feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of different dietary lipid levels and feeding frequencies on the growth performance, feed utilization, and body composition of juvenile spotted seabass, Lateolabrax maculatus. Two experimental diets were prepared with two different dietary lipid contents, low lipid (7%; LL) and high lipid (14%; HL). Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish (5.5 ± 0.01 g) to apparent satiation at three meals per day, two meals per day, one meal per day, and one meal every 2 d, respectively, for 6 wk. Fish growth performance in terms of weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) was significantly affected by frequency of feeding, with increasing values as feeding frequency increased up to twice daily, regardless of dietary lipid content. In addition, fish fed the diet with the HL level (14%) showed significantly higher WG and SGR than those fed the LL diet (7%) at all the feeding frequencies tested. Feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were affected by both dietary lipid level and feeding frequency. FE and PER values were significantly higher in fish fed the HL diet and/or when fish were fed twice or thrice a day. However, daily feed intake and daily energy intake were significantly affected only by feeding frequency and were significantly reduced when the fish were fed only once every 2 d compared with those fed more frequently. Whole‐body moisture content of fish tended to decrease with increasing dietary lipid level and frequency of feeding. In contrast, whole‐body lipid content increased in fish as dietary lipid level and feeding frequency increased. Consequently, we can conclude that feeding spotted seabass twice daily to apparent satiation is acceptable and sufficient to achieve good growth and FE, as fish performance was not significantly enhanced when feeding was increased from two to three times daily.

Oxygen consumption (OC) and ammonia excretion rates (AE) of perch were measured under commercial‐like conditions (temperature 23.3 °C) in both fed (F) and feed‐deprived groups (D). Measurements were taken in triplicate in six sized batches of perch ranging from 44.8 to 336.2 g. The mean daily OC was 288.3–180.6 mg O2 kg?1 h?1 for group F fish ranging in size from 44.8 to 279.4 g body weight. The mean daily AE expressed as total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) was 13.8–5.2 mg TAN kg?1 h?1 in the same groups. Daily peaks of OC in group F perch were observed 6 h after the onset of feeding for each size group with relatively stable values up to the end of feeding. Peaks of daily AE in group F perch were observed 10 h after the onset of feeding in each size group, with a rapid decrease up to 16 h after onset. In group D, OC was 181.1–110.5 mg O2 kg?1 h?1 in the weight range 57.9–336.2 g. The daily mean AE was 1.7–0.5 TAN kg?1 h?1 in this group. No dramatic peaks of OC and AE were observed in group D perch.

Four experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of feeding frequency on growth of juvenile Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus L. Fish (22–75 g) fed three (3 ×) or five times per day (5 × day?1) under constant light and temperature (13±1°C) consumed significantly more feed than fish fed 1 × day?1 but by the end of the experiment only fish fed 5 × day?1 were heavier and had greater specific growth rates (SGR). Under simulated winter conditions (9L:15D, 5±1°C), halibut (~300 g) fed every other day consumed more feed, had a greater SGR and final weight compared with fish fed every third day. Feed conversion ratios were not different among treatment groups in any of the experiments. These results suggest that growth rates may be improved by feeding juvenile halibut more than 1 × day?1.
