The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of sequential treatment with buserelin (a GnRH agonist) and cloprostenol (a prostaglandin F2 alpha analog) on estrous response and fertility in beef cattle with different ovarian conditions. On d 0 (1st d of treatment), the control group (n = 52, 10 heifers and 42 cows) and the GnRH group (n = 48, 10 heifers and 38 cows) received 2 mL of saline or 2 mL of Receptal (8 micrograms of buserelin), respectively. On d 6, all cows that had not exhibited spontaneous estrus were given i.m. 500 micrograms of cloprostenol (PGF). Ultrasonography on d 0 and assays of progesterone in blood on d -11, 0, and 6 were used to identify follicular and luteal status of animals. Cattle were observed for estrus from d 0 to 10. Cows showing estrus were bred artificially 12 h after onset of estrus. Over the 10-d period, the number of cows detected in estrus and pregnancy and conception rates were identical for the two groups. However, between d 0 and 6, the proportion of cows exhibiting estrus was lower (P less than .01) in the GnRH group than in the control group. Between d 6 and 10, the synchronization rate and precision of estrus were greater (P less than .01) in the buserelin-treated group than in the control group. Conception rate and interval from PGF injection to onset of estrus were not different between the two treatment groups. Presence of a large (greater than 10 mm) follicle on d 0 enhanced synchronization rate and precision of estrus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of the uterus on luteal lifespan and pattern of secretion of progesterone following early weaning of calves from anestrous beef cows was studied. Calves were weaned from 15 anestrous beef cows 23 to 33 d postpartum, and cows were allotted to a control (sham surgery, n = 8) or a hysterectomy (n = 7) group, with surgery performed at weaning. Cows in the hysterectomy group were injected (im) with 25 mg prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) approximately 20 d after first estrus (d 0). The interval from weaning to estrus was longer (P less than .05) for the hysterectomy group (10.4 +/- 1.6 d) than the control group (6.2 +/- .5 d). In the control group, the first estrous cycle (8.8 +/- .3 d) was shorter (P less than .01) than the second estrous cycle (20.2 +/- .5 d). Following first estrus in the hysterectomy group, cows were not detected in estrus until after injection of PGF2 alpha and did not return to estrus. From d 0 to 5, mean concentrations of plasma progesterone were similar (P greater than .05) between groups for both estrous cycles; after d 5 of estrous cycle 1, concentrations of plasma progesterone decreased in the control group. Within the hysterectomy group, the pattern of secretion of progesterone from d 0 to 16 was similar after the first and second estrus. Furthermore, there was no difference in the pattern of secretion of progesterone from d 0 to 16 between hysterectomy (first or second estrous cycles) and control (second estrous cycle) groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study compared the responses shown by lactating dairy cows to four different P4-based protocols for AI at estrus. Cows with no estrous signs 96 h after progesterone intravaginal device (PRID) removal were subjected to fixed-time AI (FTAI), and their data were also included in the study. In Experiment I, follicular/luteal and endometrial dynamics were assessed every 12 h from the beginning of treatment until AI. The estrous response was examined in Experiment II, and fertility was assessed in both experiments. The protocols consisted of a PRID fitted for five days, along with the administration of different combinations of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), equine chorionic gonadotropin and a single or double dose (24 h apart) of prostaglandin F. In Experiment I (40 cows), animals receiving GnRH at the start of treatment showed a significantly higher ovulation rate during the PRID insertion period while estrus was delayed. In Experiment II (351 cows), according to the odds ratios, cows showing luteal activity at the time of treatment were less likely to show estrus than cows with no signs of luteal activity. Treatment affected the estrous response and the interval from PRID removal to estrus but did not affect conception rates 28–34 days post AI. Primiparous cows displayed a better estrous response than multiparous cows. Our findings reveal acceptable results of 5-day P4-based protocols for AI at estrus in high-producing dairy cows. Time from treatment to estrus emerged as a good guide for FTAI after a 5-day P4-based synchronization protocol.  相似文献

Cows with two waves of follicular growth during the estrous cycle yield follicles that are older and larger at ovulation compared with cows having three waves. The objectives of the current research were 1) to compare fertility in cows with two or three follicular waves and 2) to examine associations between luteal function, follicular development, and fertility after breeding. Follicular waves were monitored by ultrasonography during the estrous cycle before insemination in 106 dairy cows. Fewer cows had three follicular waves before next estrus and ovulation than two waves (P < 0.01; 30% vs 68%, respectively), but pregnancy rate was higher (P = 0.058; 81 vs 63%, respectively). Cows with two waves had shorter estrous cycles (P < 0.01), with the ovulatory follicle being both larger (P < 0.05) and older (P < 0.01). In cows with three waves, luteal function was extended (P < 0.05) and the peak in plasma progesterone occurred later (P < 0.05) in the estrous cycle compared to two wave cows. Considering cows that became pregnant, luteal phase length was shorter (P < 0.05) during the estrous cycle preceding insemination than for nonpregnant cows. In conclusion, fertility was greater in lactating cows inseminated after ovulation of the third-wave follicle that had developed for fewer days of the estrous cycle as compared with two-wave cows.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the response of the bovine corpus luteum to surges of luteinizing hormone (LH) induced by natural gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) administered twice during the same estrous cycle. In experiment 1, eight mature beef cows, each cow serving as her own control, were injected intravenously (iv) with saline on days 2 and 8 of the cycle (day of estrus = day 0 of the cycle), then with 100 micrograms GnRH on days 2 and 8 of the subsequent cycle. Jugular blood samples were taken immediately prior to an injection and at 15, 30, 45, 60, 120 and 240 min postinjection, to quantitate changes in serum luteinizing hormone. Blood was also collected on alternate days after an injection until day 16 of the cycle, to characterize changes in serum progesterone concentrations. Although exogenous GnRH caused release of LH on days 2 and 8 of the cycle, the quantity of LH released was greater on day 8 (P less than .025). Serum levels of progesterone after treatment with GnRH on day 8 of the cycle did not differ significantly from those observed during the control cycles of the heifers. Because exposure of the bovine corpus luteum to excess LH, induced by GnRH early during the estrous cycle, causes attenuated progesterone secretion during the same cycle, these data suggest that a second surge of endogenous LH may ameliorate the suppressive effect of the initial release of LH on luteal function. Duration of the estrous cycle was not altered by treatment (control, 20.4 +/- .5 vs. treated, 20.4 +/- .4 days).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Two hundred and fifty-one cows fresh at least 37 days with normal reproductive tracts and palpable ovarian structures which clinicians believed to be corpora lutea and which were presumed to be producing progesterone were treated with 500 micrograms of cloprostenol. The cows were stratified into three groups based on milk progesterone concentrations in whole milk samples taken at the time of examination. The low group had milk progesterone concentrations less than or equal to 1 ng/ml, the intermediate group had milk progesterone concentrations between 1 and 3 ng/ml, and the high group had milk progesterone concentrations greater than or equal to 3 ng/ml. The proportion of cows in each group inseminated within 5 days of treatment and the fertility at that breeding were compared. There were no significant differences among the groups with respect to the proportion of cows that came into estrus within 5 days. However, the conception rate of the high group (54%) was significantly greater than that of the intermediate group (26%). To study the relationship between practitioner experience and diagnostic accuracy the proportion of cows with low, intermediate and high concentrations of progesterone selected by clinicians with more than 3 years experience was compared to that for clinicians with 3 years of experience or less. Less experienced clinicians were significantly more likely to make a false positive diagnosis of functional luteal tissue in cows with palpable ovarian structures than were more experienced clinicians.  相似文献

Peripheral serum progesterone concentrations were evaluated in beef heifers following breeding collected on d 6 +/- 1, 9 +/- 1 collected on d 6 +/- 1, 9 +/- 1 and 12 +/- 1 (estrus = d 0) after the puberal estrus of all heifers and after the third estrus of E3 heifers. Progesterone concentrations were higher (P less than .05) for heifers in E1 compared with heifers in E3 on d 6, 9 and 12 after breeding to a fertile bull. Progesterone concentrations on d 6, 9 and 12 did not differ (P greater than .10) between pregnant heifers in E1 and E3; however, non-pregnant heifers in E1 had higher (P less than .05) concentrations of progesterone compared with non-pregnant heifers in E3 on each day. Concentrations of progesterone did not differ (P greater than .10) between non-pregnant heifers in E1 and heifers of E3 during their puberal cycle. Pregnant heifers in E1 and E3 had higher (P less than .05) concentrations of progesterone on each day than non-pregnant heifers in their respective treatments. There were no interactions (P greater than .10) between treatment, pregnancy status and day-of-estrous cycle for concentrations of progesterone. Results of this study indicated that luteal function differed between heifers that failed to conceive at their puberal estrus and heifers that failed to conceive at third estrus. However, concentrations of progesterone did not differ between heifers that conceived at puberal or third estrus. The relationship of changes in luteal function from the puberal through the third estrous cycle and pregnancy is not clear.  相似文献

The efficacy of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) on the fertility of dairy heifers and postpartum cows was studied. In one study, 300 cows were assigned randomly to 1 treatment from a 2 X 2 design, and 2 ml of 0.15M saline solution or 100 micrograms of GnRH was given IM on postpartum day (PPD) 14 and at the time of 1st postpartum breeding. In a 2nd study, repeat breeder cows (n = 346) were given saline solution or GnRH at the time of the 3rd breeding. In a 3rd study, heifers (n = 185) were given saline solution or GnRH at 1st breeding. Animals were observed for repeat estrus, and pregnancy diagnoses were made by rectal palpation 45 to 60 days after breeding. Conception rates were 15% to 18% higher for cows given GnRH, whether at PPD 14 or at the first postpartum breeding. When GnRH was given at the first breeding, conception rates were significantly higher (P less than 0.05). Conception rates for repeat breeder cows given GnRH were 25% higher than those in controls (P less than 0.005). Conception rates for heifers did not differ between treatments.  相似文献

Changes and interrelationships among the cellular mechanisms that may regulate luteal progesterone synthesis during the bovine estrous cycle were studied. Corpora lutea (CL) were enucleated from 30 cows via a transvaginal incision on d 4, 7, 10, 13, 16 and 19 following estrus (estrus = d 0). Mean corpus luteum weight, and luteal progesterone and plasma progesterone concentrations increased (P less than .05) from d 4 to 7 or 10, and declined following luteal regression (d 19). Unoccupied LH receptor (UOR) concentrations increased (P less than .05) more than fourfold from d 4 (38 fmol/mg protein) to d 16 (173 fmol/mg protein) before declining (P less than .05) by d 19 (30 fmol/mg protein). The dissociation constant for UOR concentrations increased (P less than .05) during the estrous cycle. Concentrations of occupied LH receptors (OR) were less (P less than .05) on d 7 than other days; however, the total number of OR/CL increased fourfold from d 4 (47 fmol/CL) to d 10 (221 fmol/CL) and remained similar thereafter. Basal adenylate cyclase, LH-activated adenylate cyclase, and Gpp(NH)p-activated adenylate cyclase activities were greatest (P less than .05) on d 7 to 16 as compared with d 4 and 19. Luteinizing hormone stimulated (P less than .05) adenylate cyclase activity relative to basal activity on d 7, 10, 13, and 16; whereas, Gpp(NH)p stimulated (P less than .05) adenylate cyclase activity relative to basal activity at each period. Phosphodiesterase was 46% greater on d 19 as compared with d 4.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Spring-calving, crossbred (1/4 to 3/8 Brahman) primiparous (n = 56) and multiparous (n = 102) beef cows were used to evaluate the effects of progesterone, delivered via a controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) device, and prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) on estrous behavior, synchronization rate, initiation of estrous cycles, and pregnancy rate during a 2-yr period. To determine luteal activity, weekly blood samples were collected 3 wk before initiation of a 75-d breeding season. Treated cows received a CIDR for 7 d beginning on d -7 of the breeding season. On d 0, CIDR were removed, and cows receiving CIDR were administered PGF(2alpha); control cows received no treatment. Cows were exposed to bulls, and estrous activity was monitored using a radiotelemetry system for the first 30 d of the breeding season. Treatment with CIDR-PGF(2alpha) increased (P < 0.05) the number of mounts received (22.5 +/- 3.0 vs. 13.7 +/- 3.9 for CIDR-PGF(2alpha) vs. untreated control cows, respectively) but did not influence duration of estrus or quiescence between mounts. Number of mounts received and duration of estrus were greater (P < 0.05) in multiparous compared with primiparous cows. Synchronization of estrus was greater (P < 0.05) in cows treated with CIDR-PGF(2alpha) (56%) compared with control cows (13%) during the first 3 d of the breeding season. More (P < 0.05) anestrous cows treated with CIDR-PGF(2alpha) than anestrous control cows were in estrus during the first 3 d (59 vs. 12%) and 30 d (82 vs. 63%) of the breeding season. Treatment with CIDR-PGF(2alpha) decreased (P < 0.05) the interval to first estrus after treatment during the first 30 d of the breeding season compared with control cows (5.5 +/- 1.1 vs. 9.0 +/- 1.4 d). First service conception rate was greater (P < 0.05) in CIDR-PGF(2alpha)-treated cows compared with control cows. Cyclic cows at initiation of the breeding season had an increased (P < 0.05) 75-d pregnancy rate compared with anestrous cows, and the pregnancy rate tended (P = 0.10) to be greater in multiparous compared with primiparous cows. We conclude that treatment of Brahman-influenced cows with progesterone via a CIDR for 7 d, along with administration of PGF(2alpha) at CIDR removal, increases the number of mounts received, improves synchronization and first service conception rates, decreases the interval to first estrus after treatment, and may be effective at inducing estrous cycles in anestrous cows.  相似文献

A trial was conducted to evaluate the ability of a prostaglandin analog, Luprostiol (LP), to synchronize estrus in Brahman cows and heifers. Animals were injected with either 0, 3.75, 7.5, 15 or 30 mg LP or 500 micrograms cloprostenol (CLP) on d 8 or 9 after estrus (d 0). All concentrations of LP (greater than 0 mg) and CLP caused luteolysis in cows and heifers, as indicated by a decline (P less than .01) in serum progesterone concentration after injection. Animals receiving 0 or 3.75 mg LP had a longer (P less than .04) interval to estrus after injection than did animals in other treatment groups. The proportion of animals exhibiting estrus by 120 h after injection was influenced by dose of LP (P less than .0001; 0, 3.75 mg less than 7.5, 15 and 30 mg and CLP) but not by age. Cows had a lower (P less than .01) progesterone concentration than heifers on d 10, 11 and 12 after LP-induced estrus. Progesterone concentration was lowest (P less than .01) on d 10, 11 and 12 after LP-induced estrus in cows given 15 mg LP or CLP. First-service conception rate was similar between cows and heifers, but it was lower (P less than .01) in animals given 15 or 30 mg LP. Both estrogen and LH concentrations were decreased (P less than .01) at the time of estrus by the 15 and 30 mg of LP. Luprostiol can cause luteolysis and estrous synchrony in Brahman cattle.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Beef cows and heifers (n = 263) at three locations that were exhibiting estrous cycle either were fed .5 mg/d melengestrol acetate (MGA) for 7 d and administered prostaglandin F2 alpha (25 mg, i.m.) on the last day of MGA feeding or were untreated. State of the estrous cycle at the beginning of the experiment was determined based on estrous detection and (or) progesterone concentrations in pretreatment blood samples. Estrous was checked twice daily for 30 d posttreatment. Animals were artificially inseminated approximately 12 h after detection of estrus. A synchronized estrus (less than 7 d posttreatment) was detected in 72% of the treated animals. More animals in the treated group became pregnant during the first 7 d of breeding, but their conception rate was lower than that of animals in the control group (P less than .05). Conception rate (36%) was reduced among treated animals when MGA feeding began late (d 14 to 20) in the estrous cycle. Conversely, the conception rate (66%) of treated animals fed MGA beginning earlier in the cycle was not different from that of control animals (73%; treatment x stage of cycle; P less than .05).  相似文献

Seventy-seven multiparous beef cows (Hereford and Angus x Hereford) with thin to moderate BCS at calving were used to evaluate the effects of body condition at parturition and BW change after calving on duration and occurence of luteal activity before and after first estrus. Blood samples were collected twice weekly after parturition to determine the occurrence of the first postpartum luteal activity (LA, progesterone > or = 0.5 ng/mL). Weight changes and BCS were determined at 2-wk intervals. Cows were exposed to bulls and observed twice daily for behavioral estrus. Luteal activity was classified as normal if plasma concentrations of progesterone were > or = 0.5 ng/mL for at least 11 d, or short if concentrations of progesterone were > or = 0.5 ng/mL for 10 d or less. The interval from parturition to first normal LA was shorter (P < 0.001) for moderate condition (BCS > or = 4.5) than for thin (BCS < or = 4) cows (58.3 +/- 3.2 vs. 93.3 +/- 5.1 d, respectively). Interval to first estrus also was shorter (P < 0.001) for moderate than for thin cows (53.3 +/- 3.7 vs. 89.3 +/- 5.6 d, respectively). Before the first normal LA, 78% of cows had an increase in progesterone for < 11 d. Postpartum weight change and BCS at calving did not influence the incidence of estrus associated with first normal LA. After the first estrus, 72% of cows had normal LA, 16% had a short luteal phase, and 12% lacked LA. Postpartum weight change and BCS did not influence the length of LA associated with the first estrus. Cows with normal LA had increased (P < 0.05) maximal concentrations of progesterone compared with cows that had a short luteal phase. When a transient increase in progesterone occurred before first behavioral estrus, 81% of cows had normal luteal function after estrus. We conclude that when beef cows are in thin to moderate body condition at calving, postpartum BW change and BCS at calving do not influence the duration of luteal activity before or after the first postpartum estrus.  相似文献

Three different treatments were compared to improve pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) in repeat-breeder (RB) dairy cows. All cows (n = 103) were assigned to one of four groups: (1) gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH); (2) human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG); (3) once-used controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device; and (4) control. All treatments performed 5-6 days after artificial insemination (AI) and milk samples were collected just before treatment for progesterone assays. There were no significant differences in milk fat progesterone concentration among trial groups. Cows were observed for estrus signs thrice daily. Pregnancy per AI on day 45 in hCG and CIDR groups were significantly higher than GnRH and control groups (60.0% and 56.0% vs. 26.9% and 29.6%, respectively), but there were no differences in P/AI between GnRH and control groups. There were also no significant differences between hCG and CIDR groups. Milk fat progesterone concentrations were compared between pregnant and non-pregnant cows in each group and only in the hCG group it was significantly lower in pregnant cows. In conclusion, treating repeat-breeder cows with hCG or once-used CIDR 5-6 days after AI improved P/AI.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine estrous response and pregnancy rate in beef cattle given a controlled internal drug release (CIDR-B) device plus prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF) at CIDR-B removal, and estradiol or gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). In Experiment I, crossbred beef heifers received a CIDR-B device and 1 mg estradiol benzoate (EB), plus 100 mg progesterone (E + P group; n = 41), 100 micrograms gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH group; n = 42), or no further treatment (Control group; n = 42), on Day 0. On Day 7, CIDR-B devices were removed and heifers were treated with PGF. Heifers in the E + P group were given 1 mg EB, 24 h after PGF, and then inseminated 30 h later. Heifers in the GnRH group were given 100 micrograms GnRH, 54 h after PGF, and concurrently inseminated. Control heifers were inseminated 12 h after onset of estrus. The estrous rate was lower (P < 0.01) in the GnRH group (55%) than in either the E + P (100%) or Control (83%) groups. The mean interval from CIDR-B removal to estrus was shorter (P < 0.01) and less variable (P < 0.01) in the E + P group than in the GnRH or Control groups. Pregnancy rate in the E + P group (76%) was higher (P < 0.01) than in the GnRH (48%) or Control (38%) groups. In Experiment II, 84 cows were treated similarly to the E + P group in Experiment I. Cows received 100 mg progesterone and either 1 mg EB or 5 mg estradiol-17 beta (E-17 beta) on Day 0 and either 1 mg of EB or 1 mg of E-17 beta on Day 8 (24 h after CIDR-B removal), in a 2 x 2 factorial design, and were inseminated 30 h later. There were no differences among groups for estrous rates or conception rates. The mean interval from CIDR-B removal to estrus was 44.2 h, s = 11.2. Conception rates were 67%, 62%, 52%, and 71% in Groups E-17 beta/E-17 beta, E-17 beta/EB, EB/E-17 beta, and EB/EB, respectively. In cattle given a CIDR-B device and estradiol plus progesterone, treatment with either EB or E-17 beta effectively synchronized estrus and resulted in acceptable conception rates to fixed-time artificial insemination.  相似文献

Mature beef cows were slaughtered at 5 (n = 6), 10 (n = 6), 20 (n = 6) or 30 (n = 5) d after calving to identify endocrine events that may affect the duration of postpartum anestrus. Additional cows (n = 6) were slaughtered 12 to 14 d after their first postpartum estrus (luteal phase cows). Anterior pituitary concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) were low at d 5 (383 +/- 69 micrograms/g), averaged 445 +/- 103 and 682 +/- 207 micrograms/g at d 10 and 20, respectively, and were elevated (P less than .05) by d 30 (1,097 +/- 174 micrograms) to a concentration similar to luteal phase cows (1,208 +/- 148 micrograms/g). Concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) averaged 12.4 +/- 1.1, 9.6 +/- 2, 8.6 +/- 1.8 and 7.4 +/- 3.3 mg/g at d 5, 10, 20 and 30, respectively. Affinity (1.6 +/- .2 X 10(9) M-1) of anterior pituitary receptors for the GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) analog (DAla6; des-Gly10, [D-Ala6]-LH-RH ethylamide) and weights (2.1 +/- .1 g) of the anterior pituitaries did not differ among groups (P greater than .05). Number of receptors for GnRH averaged 37 +/- 7, 39 +/- 9, 25 +/- 5 and 23 +/- 5 X 10(-14) M/mg protein at d 5, 10, 20 and 30, respectively. Anterior pituitaries from luteal phase cows contained 22 +/- 2 X 10(-14) M/mg protein of receptors for GnRH.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Our objectives were to investigate the effects of genotype, yield and composition of milk, and changes in BW and body condition on the initiation of cyclic ovarian activity in nonsuckled beef and dairy cows milked twice daily. Nulliparous heifers were selected from three breeds, 12 Angus, 13 Simmentals, and 26 Holsteins, based on their EBV for milk yield. Cows were machine-milked twice daily, and daily milk yield was recorded; composite samples of milk were collected twice weekly for analyses of milk components. Blood was collected from all cows thrice weekly for 75 d postpartum, and concentrations of progesterone in serum measured by RIA were used to estimate day of first postpartum ovulation. Holstein cows produced more (P less than .05) milk (unadjusted or 3.5% fat-corrected) than Angus or Simmental cows during the first 30 d of lactation. Holstein cows had higher (P less than .01) peak yield of milk than Simmental and Angus cows. Days to peak milk yield were similar for Simmental and Holstein cows, and both were more (P less than .05) than those for Angus cows. Percentages of fat, protein, and total solids in milk were highest (P less than .05) for Simmental cows, whereas milk of Holstein cows had the highest (P less than .05) percentage of lactose and lowest (P less than .05) concentration of somatic cells. Average BW at ovulation differed (P less than .05) among breeds. Estimated daily changes in BW from calving to first ovulation were different (P less than .05) for Holstein and Simmental cows but were similar to those of Angus cows.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of BCS at calving and the amount of postpartum protein supplementation on the dominant follicle (DF) and behavioral characteristics at the first postpartum estrus of mature beef cows. Multiparous Angus x Hereford cows (n = 45) were fed to calve in thin (T; < 5) or moderate (M; >or=5) BCS. Cows were stratified by BCS and calving date, and randomly assigned to receive lesser (L; 1.2 kg/d) or greater (G; 2.5 kg/d) amounts of a 42% CP supplement. All cows grazed the same native grass pasture and were fed in individual stalls for 49 +/- 2 d. Beginning 20 d after calving, blood samples were collected from each cow thrice weekly, and estrous behavior was monitored continuously with a radiotelemetry system. At 4 to 16 h after the onset of estrus, size of the DF was determined by ultrasonography. Body condition score of T cows was less (P < 0.01) at calving than M cows; L and G cows had similar BCS at calving and at the end of the feeding period. Body weight gains during treatment did not differ for L or G cows. Duration from calving to first estrus was greater (P < 0.01) for T than M cows. The incidence of a short luteal phase before first estrus was not influenced by BCS or protein supplement. Concentrations of IGF-I in plasma tended (P < 0.07) to be greater and size of the DF was greater (P < 0.01) for M than T cows. Size of the DF tended (P < 0.06) to be greater for G than L cows. Duration and number of mounts received at the first estrus were not influenced by BCS or supplement. Pregnancy rate of M cows during the breeding season was greater (P < 0.05) than T cows. Postpartum protein intake and BCS at calving influenced the size of the DF at the first postpartum estrus in mature suckled beef cows. Cows should be managed to calve in moderate BCS and maintain BW after parturition to decrease the interval to first estrus, increase follicular development, and maximize pregnancy rate.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of varying the interval from follicular wave emergence to progestin (controlled internal drug-releasing insert, CIDR) withdrawal on follicular dynamics and the synchrony of estrus. A secondary objective was to assess the effects of causing the dominant follicle (DF) to develop in the presence or absence of a corpus luteum (CL) on follicular dynamics and the synchrony of estrus and ovulation. The experiment was designed as a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with injection of GnRH or estradiol-17 beta and progesterone (E2 + P4) at treatment initiation, duration of CIDR treatment, and injection of PG (prostaglandin F2 alpha) or saline at the time of CIDR insertion as main effects. Estrous cycles (n = 49) in Angus cows were synchronized, and treatments commenced on d 6 to 8 of the estrous cycle. Cows were randomly assigned to receive a CIDR containing 1.9 g of P4 for 7 or 9 d. Approximately half the cows from each CIDR group received either GnRH (100 micrograms) or E2 + P4 (1 mg of E2 + 100 mg of P4) at CIDR insertion. Cows in GnRH or E2 + P4 groups were divided into those that received PG (37.5 mg) or saline at CIDR insertion. All cows received PG (25 mg) 1 d before CIDR removal. Daily ovarian events were monitored via ultrasound. The intervals from GnRH or E2 + P4 treatment to follicular wave emergence were 1.4 and 3.3 d, respectively (P < 0.05). The interval from follicular wave emergence to CIDR removal was longer (P < 0.05) for cows treated with GnRH (6.6 d) than those treated with E2 + P4 (4.7 d) and longer (P < 0.05) for those fitted with a CIDR for 9 d (6.5 d) than those with a CIDR in place for 7 d (4.8 d). Cows treated with PG or GnRH at CIDR insertion had a larger (P < 0.05) DF at CIDR removal than those treated with saline or E2 + P4. Treatment with a CIDR for 9 d also resulted in a larger (P < 0.07) DF at CIDR removal compared with cows fitted with a CIDR for 7 d. The interval from CIDR removal to estrus was shorter (P < 0.05) in cows treated with PG than those treated with saline. The synchrony of estrus and ovulation was not affected by any of the treatments (P > 0.05). Altering the interval from follicular wave emergence to progestin removal or creating different luteal environments in which the DF developed caused differences in the size of the DF at CIDR removal and the timing of the onset of estrus, but it did not affect the synchrony of estrus or ovulation.  相似文献
