Wolffish, Anarhichas lupus L. has internal fertilization. The eggs are released into water before the beginning of cleavage and stick together in clutches. To develop methods for separating eggs for subsequent incubation, changes during egg swelling and egg shell hardening were observed. Uninseminated eggs did not swell in ovarian fluid, but a perivitelline space formed in sea water because of a partial cortical reaction. In inseminated eggs kept in ovarian fluid, a cortical reaction took place and swelling was caused by elevation of the yolk membrane. Shrinkage of the yolk and absorption of water were observed after inseminated eggs were placed in sea water. Eggs swelled in ovarian fluid diluted by less than 30% sea water showed abnormal cleavage during subsequent development. An effective method for preventing egg stickiness after fertilization was to distribute them in trays with stagnant sea water for at least 5-6 h. Milk was effective for loss of egg adhesiveness at 50% concentration, but some eggs cleaved abnormally and subsequent mortality was high. The influences of ovarian fluid and milk on initial egg development with respect to peculiarities of egg swelling are discussed.  相似文献

Egg quality in Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus, kept indoors at 7 °C during spawning season was morphologically classified. Four egg categories based on lipid droplet distributions and egg diameter were characterized. Eggs with homogenous lipid vesicle distributions and a uniform size were classified as Good. Eggs with some yolk lipid droplets coalesced toward one pole but were homogeneous in size were classified as Fair. Eggs with lipid vesicles that were usually coalesced at one or two poles with were classified as Poor. The fourth egg category was Heterogeneous, in which lipid vesicle distribution and egg size were inhomogeneous. This distribution pattern of the lipid vesicle had a strong relationship with the percentage of fertilized and eyed eggs. Percentages of fertilized and eyed eggs in Good and Fair eggs were 85.5 and 83.4; 30.2 and 28.2, respectively. With Poor and Heterogeneous eggs, the percentages of fertilized and eyed eggs were zero. Egg diameter and absolute weight was increased in Poor eggs than in other egg categories. Relative weight increase during hardening after 30, 45 and 60 min were higher in Good and Fair eggs than in Poor and Heterogeneous eggs. Ovarian fluid collected from egg batches with low rates of fertilized and eyed eggs (Heterogeneous and Poor) had a lower pH and higher protein and aspartate amino-transferase enzyme than ovarian fluid from eggs batches classified as Good or Fair, while the ovarian fluid osmolality did not significantly differ. ATP contents of Poor and Heterogeneous eggs were lower than for Good and Fair eggs. In Heterogeneous eggs, both ATP and acid phosphatase contents were very variable.  相似文献

In five separate experiments, eggs from a single female goldfish were fertilized at 20°C. They were incubated at 22°C for 6 hours, after which some of the eggs were transferred to 13°C. When a defined post-hatch developmental stage was reached, lipid extracts were prepared from larvae, both with yolk sacs intact and after removal of the yolk sac by dissection. Other larvae were sampled at yolk exhaustion. Gas chromatographic analysis of fatty acid profiles revealed that larvae incorporated 16:0, 18:0, 20:4 (n–6) and 22:6 (n–3) into their tissues in proportions higher than those present in the eggs from which they were derived. At 22°C, these trends were particularly apparent at yolk exhaustion. At 13°C, proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the bodies of newly hatched larvae were higher than those in the 22°C larval bodies. Monounsaturated fatty acids were preferentially depleted during development, especially in larvae from high quality eggs. No dependence of egg quality, as assessed by larval viability at 22°C, on total egg lipid mass or fatty acid composition was found. Larvae from the lowest quality eggs showed a reduced preference for incorporation of (n–3) polyunsaturated fatty acids into their tissues.  相似文献

Two hundred and twenty rainbow trouts (IBW: 700 g) were randomly allotted to four tanks, with a male/female ratio of 0.56. Fish were fed for 168 d with four experimental diets containing herring oil, cod liver oil and coconut oil with the following inclusion rates: diet A: 12-1-0% respectively; diet B: 6-1-6%; diet C: 0-1-12%; diet D: 0-0-13%. Irrespective of the dietary treatment, weight gains of broodstocks were high (> 3 g/d) and FCR below 2. No significant difference was observed concerning the total amount of eggs spawn, egg average weight (82.5 mg/egg) and lipid content (5.4 mg/egg). However, the fatty acid profile of eggs was significantly affected by the dietary treatments. The content of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly the n-3 fatty acid series (EPA and DHA) significantly decreased with increasing levels of coconut oil in the diet.  相似文献

本实验对虎斑乌贼受精卵卵黄的营养成分进行分析,旨在探讨其幼体的营养需求量,为其幼体配合饲料研制提供参考数据。随机选取大约800个虎斑乌贼受精卵的卵黄,采用国家标准方法测定其水分、灰分、粗蛋白质、粗脂肪、氨基酸、脂肪酸和矿物元素含量。结果表明:1)虎斑乌贼受精卵卵黄中粗蛋白质含量为76.33%(干重基础);总氨基酸(TAA)和必需氨基酸(EAA)含量分别为71.22%和32.38%(干重基础),EAA/TAA为45.46%,氨基酸中以谷氨酸(Glu)含量最高(9.97%),必需氨基酸中亮氨酸(Leu)含量最高(7.58%)。2)其粗脂肪含量12.71%(干重基础);共检出17种脂肪酸,包括8种饱和脂肪酸(SFA)、5种单不饱和脂肪酸(MUFA)和4种多不饱和脂肪酸(PUFA),SFA、MUFA和PUFA分别占脂肪酸总量的43.47%、7.54%和49.25%,其中以DHA含量最高,达32.80%,EPA含量为7.70%,DHA/EPA为4.26。3)检测出Na、K、Ca、Mg、Sr、Mn、Fe、Cu、Zn、Al和As 矿物元素,微量元素中富含Zn、Al和Fe,含量分别为 0.77、0.71和0.43 mg/kg(鲜重基础)。由此可见,卵黄具有高蛋白、低脂肪,富含n-3PUFA的特点;虎斑乌贼幼体饲料中蛋白质需求量参考值为76.33%;氨基酸需求量参考值,如赖氨酸(Lys)为5.49%,蛋氨酸(Met)为2.63%;脂肪的需求量参考值为12.71%,DHA为4.17%,EPA为0.98%;微量元素需求量参考值,如Zn为2.77 mg/kg,Cu为0.19 mg/kg(干重基础)。  相似文献

The changes in egg lipids and fatty acid compositions that occur during embryonic development of spotted wolf‐fish, Anarhichas minor, were examined by monitoring individual egg batches from the time of spawning (egg stripping) until hatching. The lipids, present as 3.7±0.1% of the wet mass of the freshly stripped eggs, contained high percentages of monoenes (monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), ca. 33%) and polyenes (ca. 43%) and approximately 20% saturated fatty acids (SFAs). The fatty acid profiles were dominated by a small number of fatty acids. The major SFA was 16:0 (ca. 14%), the dominant MUFA was 18:1 n‐9 (ca. 21%), and among the polyenes, the n‐3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) 22:6 n‐3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 20:5 n‐3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were present in the highest concentrations (EPA, ca. 16%; DHA, ca. 19%). The n‐6 HUFA 20:4 n‐6 arachidonic acid (AA) was present as ca. 1% of the total fatty acids in the freshly stripped eggs. This resulted in an AA:EPA of ca. 0.07, which is lower than reported for eggs of many other fish species. As embryonic development progressed, the percentage contribution of AA to the total fatty acids almost doubled. There were also increases in the relative proportions of SFAs (due mainly to an increase in the percentage of 16:0 to ca. 16% at hatch) and DHA (to ca. 23%), and there was a corresponding decrease in the percentage of MUFAs (mostly brought about by a decrease in the percentage of 18:1 n‐9 to ca. 18% at hatch). The most marked changes occurred towards the end of incubation. The percentage of EPA changed little during incubation. This implies that there was selective retention of DHA, 16:0 and AA, and these fatty acids were probably incorporated into cell membranes. MUFAs, particularly 18:1 n‐9, seem to have been catabolized to provide energy for the developing embryo, and some EPA also seems to have been utilized as an energy source. Survival of eggs to the eyed stage (range ca. 10–80%) and to hatch (ca. 5–75%) was negatively correlated with the %AA, %EPA and AA:DHA of the freshly stripped eggs. There was also a negative correlation between AA:EPA and egg survival, which implies that there is not a universal requirement for a high AA:EPA to ensure high rates of survival of fish eggs.  相似文献

We have determined a number of biological characteristics of the Persian sturgeon egg (including diameter, surface-to-volume ratio, yolk sphere and perivitelline space) and of female brood stocks (including age, length, weight, condition and absolute fecundity) in 420 specimens of the migratory population of Acipenser persicus in Gorgan bay of Iran from 2001 to 2004. In the hydrated egg, the average egg diameter, yolk diameter, surface-to-volume ratio and yolk sphere-to-perivitelline space ratio values were: 3.64 ± 0.17 mm, 3.26 ± 0.25 mm, 1.65 ± 0.08 and 0.75 ± 0.01, respectively. In this chondrostean species, the egg surface and volume were found to increase with increasing egg diameter, but the egg surface-to-volume ratio decreased. In Persian sturgeon, the surface-to-volume ratio and yolk sphere-to-perivitelline space ratio is very high; therefore, the metabolic rate is low and female spawning occurs in low-temperature waters. The statistical Pearson correlation between egg diameter relative to a number of brood stock characteristics, including fork length (r = 0.059), weight (r = 0.140), age (r = 0.081) and absolute fecundity (r = 0.095), were not significantly different (P > 0.05). An extensive comparison of these results with data published on other fish species is presented and discussed.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) on flame angelfish (Centropyge loriculus) reproduction, and egg and larval quality. In the experiment, formulated diets containing 1.8, 2.9 or 3.6% n‐3 HUFA were fed to flame angelfish broodstock (n = 4) for 5 months. Mean fecundity (daily egg production), egg fertilization rates and embryo viability were used as indicators of egg quality. In addition, mean egg diameter, oil globule diameter, per cent hatch, larval size at hatch, per cent survival to yolk exhaustion and larval size at yolk exhaustion were recorded for each treatment. Flame angelfish fed the diet containing 3.6% n‐3 HUFA exhibited significantly increased fecundity, fertilization rates and embryo viability than fish that were fed the other two formulated diets. Egg diameter, egg oil globule diameter, larval size at hatch, larval survival to yolk exhaustion and larval size at yolk exhaustion from the 3.6% n‐3 HUFA broodstock treatment group were not significantly different from those derived from the Control broodstock treatment. These data revealed that flame angelfish egg quality could respond rapidly (within weeks) to maternal dietary changes. Results from this study further support that dietary HUFA composition can significantly affect broodstock reproductive performance as well as subsequent performance of eggs and larvae.  相似文献

The present study investigated the relationships between egg viability and ovarian fluid composition, egg physiology and egg metabolism in lake trout, Salmo trutta lacustris, to obtain biomarkers for egg quality determination. The ovarian fluid pH, protein levels and activities of aspartate aminotransferase and -d-glucuronidase were significantly correlated with egg viability expressed as the number of eyed stage embryos. Regression models demonstrated that an ovarian fluid pH between 8.44 and 8.57, protein levels below 235.56 mg 100 ml–1ovarian fluid, aspartate aminotransferase activity below 31.65 m min–1 l–1ovarian fluid and -d-glucuronidase activity below 8.62 m min–1 l–1 ovarian fluid characterized egg batches with high viability (80%).The increase in the egg wet weight during water hardening was also significantly correlated with the number of eyed stage embryos, and egg batches with high egg viability (80%) increased in wet weight by 13% during water hardening.From the investigated metabolic parameters the number of eyed stage embryos was significantly correlated with activities of NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (egg viability 80% at 2.07 nM min–1 mg–1 protein) and NAD-dependent malate dehydrogenase (egg viability 80% at 47.25 nM min–1 mg–1 protein), with the respiration rate (egg viability 80% at 8.71 nM min–1 mg–1 protein), with the ratio of NADH to NAD levels (egg viability 80% 0.872), with the levels of free, non-esterified fatty acids (egg viability 80% 72.34 g mg–1 protein), and the ratio of non esterified to esterified fatty acids (egg viability 80% at 0.749). Also, subjective and visual control methods were described to distinguish between batches with viable and non viable eggs.  相似文献

In this study, the embryonic development of the eggs in the Mastacembelus mastacembelus (Bank & Solender, 1794) was examined. At the same time, possibilities of artificial breeding through artificial insemination were investigated. Artificial insemination was achieved by mixing the eggs of the mature female and sperm of the mature male samples caught with gill nets (22 × 22) in Ataturk Dam Lake in Turkey. To this end, first in a Petri dish (100 × 20), the testes were cut into small pieces with a lancet and the mixture of sperm–testes‐tissue was obtained. The fertilization rate of the eggs was found to be 80%. The diameter of the eggs ranged from 2.015to 1.147 mm. The perivitelline space formed 0.5 h after insemination. The first cleavage occurred at the animal pool 4 h after insemination. The oil droplets had fused to a single droplet 19 h after insemination. The blastoderm became an embryonic shield 30 h after insemination. The blastoderm covered almost half the egg 40 h after insemination and embryonic body was formed. The blastoderm covered almost the whole egg 50 h after insemination. Some somites were discernible 59 h after insemination. The embryonic body reached two‐third of the circumference of the egg 70 h after insemination. The tail bud began to separate from the yolk 77 h after insemination. A newly hatched larva was observed at 85 h after insemination.  相似文献

Abstract. Unfertilized, water-hardened eggs, obtained from a coho salmon, Oncor-hynchus kisutch (Walbaum), with coelomic fluid containing large enough numbers of the kidney disease bacterium, Renibacterium salmoninarum , to make the fluid cloudy (∼4 × 109 cells/ml), were examined by cultural and histological methods to determine (a) whether an earlier finding of the pathogen in coho eggs could be corroborated, and (b) whether iodine (500 mg/l, in the form of povidone-iodine) was as effective at ridding them of the intra-ovum pathogen as it was at freeing them of the extra-ovum pathogen. The results confirmed that the pathogen does indeed occur within the egg (11–6%-15-l % of the eggs were infected in this manner), and suggested a location in the yolk for the pathogen. The findings also indicated that while iodine was very effective in killing the pathogen on the surface of the eggs it was completely ineffective in reducing the prevalence of the intra-ovum infections. The results point out the need for a method for treating eggs internally and confirm the inadvisability of using eggs from salmonids with cloudy coelomic fluid.  相似文献

Cryoprotectant is the crucial factor in the cryopreservation process. In general, there are two types of cryoprotectant, permeating and non‐permeating cryoprotectants. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and egg yolk are common permeating and non‐permeating cryoprotectants respectively. Hence, the objective of the present study was to determine the best proportion of DMSO and egg yolk for the cryopreservation of Rasbora tawarensis sperm. A completely randomized experimental design was used in this study which involves two types of cryoprotectant and their combination at different concentrations, namely 5% DMSO, 5% egg yolk, 5% DMSO + 5% egg yolk and 2.5% DMSO + 2.5% egg yolk. Every treatment was conducted in three replicates. Combination of 5% DMSO + 5% egg yolk gave the best results cryoprotectant treatment had significant effects on sperm motility, fertilization and hatching rate of the R. tawarensis eggs (p < .05). It is concluded that the best proportion of cryoprotectants for sperm cryopreservation in this species is 5% DMSO + 5% egg yolk.  相似文献

A minimally invasive surgical technique (MIST) for the removal of ovulated eggs from Persian sturgeon Acipenser persicus was tested on broodstocks caught from the wild to determine whether it affected fecundity or hatching rates compared with the traditional stripping method of killing and removing the eggs (commonly used in hatchery). Morphological parameters of females, germinal vesicle (GV) position, weight of obtained egg, number of eggs/gram, fertilization rate, and percentage of hatching during incubation were not significantly different between the MIST and traditional stripping methods. Obtained ova were 4.8 ± 0.4 kg female−1 in the MIST and 4.6 ± 0.5 kg female−1 in traditional stripped groups, respectively; the fertilization rate was 83.4 ± 11.2% and 80.0 ± 7.2% in groups, respectively. The results of this study showed that the minimally invasive surgical technique approach is efficient, practical, and less stressful to Persian sturgeon broodstocks during artificial propagation than other reported egg collection procedures.  相似文献

The present study investigated the biochemical composition and quality of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) eggs throughout the reproductive season. Results showed that the fertilization, hatching and egg floating rates were variable throughout the reproductive season, with the highest values recorded during the mid-season. Meanwhile, positive correlations were found between fertilization, hatching rate and floating rate. The composition of turbot eggs, including total lipid, protein, carbohydrate, moisture and dry weight showed no significant differences during the reproductive season. Furthermore, no correlations were found between egg compositions and viability parameters (VPs), including fertilization and hatching rates as well as larval deformity rate. However, egg diameter varied and correlated with fertilization, hatching and egg floating rates. The fatty acid in eggs at mid-season had significantly higher levels of C14:0, C16:0, C16:1n-7, C18:0, C18:1, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3 and C22:6n-3. Moreover, significant relationships were found between fatty acids and VPs. Eggs of the middle season had significantly higher concentration of isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, valine, alanine, aspartate, glutamate and serine, whereas no significant relationships were found between amino acids and VPs. These observations suggest that the biochemical profile of eggs may be useful in evaluating egg quality and improving broodstock management for turbot.  相似文献

Fatty liver disease is regularly observed in cultured large yellow croaker, and the disease leads to lower growth rates and reduced harvest yields. The goal of this study was to achieve a more detailed understanding of the physiological and molecular changes in response to high‐fat diet‐induced fatty liver in large yellow croaker. Large yellow croaker fed a high‐fat diet (HFD) for 9 weeks developed hepatic steatosis characterized by histological observation and significantly increased plasma triglyceride levels and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities. However, no significant differences in serum total protein, glucose, cholesterol, non‐esterified free fatty acids (NEFA), aspartate aminotransferase, high‐density lipoprotein and low‐density lipoprotein were observed between the normal diet and the high‐fat diet (HFD) group. The fatty acid composition of tissue lipids was not affected significantly by dietary lipid levels. Gene expression analysis demonstrated that the HFD decreased fatty acid synthase expression and increased PPARγ expression, but had no effect on lipoprotein lipase and PPARα expression. These results suggest that the HFD‐induced physiological changes and fatty liver may be due to the alteration of related gene expression. As such, further investigations of the metabolic pathways and differentially expressed genes are of particular significance in the mechanistic study and understanding of HFD‐induced fatty liver disease.  相似文献

To establish the changes which occur during embryogenesis and early larval development, eggs, yolk sac larvae and swim-up larvae of pike were examined for lipid class and fatty acid composition. At a water temperature of 15.5°C, the embryonic phase was short (6 days) and characterized by a 41.3% decline in the lipid content of eggs, accompanied by large reductions in the amount of phosphatidylcholine (41.4% decrease), sterol esters and triacylglycerols (respectively a 41.2% decrease and a 58.1% decrease), but not phosphatidylethanolamine which increased markedly (35.6%). By the time of yolk sac absorption (7 to 11 days after fertilization) the larvae remained inactive and a limited utilization of lipids was observed. Yolk sac phosphatidylcholine was selectively incorporated into larval bodies while the levels of other lipid classes remained unchanged in the yolk. When the swim bladder was filled and the swimming stage was reached (11 days to 13 days af), the yolk was completely depleted and yolk phosphatidylcholine together with yolk triacylglycerols were catabolised. Yolk phosphatidylethanolamine and yolk sterol esters were partly incorporated into the body lipids. In the subsequent swim-up larval stage (13 to 15 days af), a steady decrease in lipids was observed (41.6%). Fluctuations in the levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids or saturated fatty acids examined from eggs or larvae were consistent with changes in lipid classes during pike development. During yolk sac absorption, pike incorporated yolk PUFA released on hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine into the larval body. The results are discussed with reference to water temperature and in relation to the ontogenic and ecological context of pike development. Lipids and essential fatty acids, particularly the highly unsaturated fatty acids, 20:5n‐3 (eicosapentaenoic acid; EPA), 22:6n‐3 (docosahexaenoic acid; DHA) and 20:4n‐6 (arachidonic acid, AA) have been shown to be crucial determinants of marine fish reproduction directly affecting fecundity, egg quality, hatching success, larval malformation and pigmentation. In Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) culture, eggs from farmed broodstock can have much lower fertilization and hatching rates than eggs from wild broodstock. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that potential quality and performance differences between eggs from different cod broodstock would be reflected in differences in lipid and fatty acid composition. Thus eggs were obtained from three broodstock, farmed, wild/fed and wild/unfed, and lipid content, lipid class composition, fatty acid composition and pigment content were determined and related to performance parameters including fertilization rate, symmetry of cell division and survival to hatching. Eggs from farmed broodstock showed significantly lower fertilization rates, cell symmetry and survival to hatching rates than eggs from wild broodstock. There were no differences in total lipid content or the proportions of the major lipid classes between eggs from the different broodstock. However, eggs from farmed broodstock were characterized by having significantly lower levels of some quantitatively minor phospholipid classes, particularly phosphatidylinositol. There were no differences between eggs from farmed and wild broodstock in the proportions of saturated, monounsaturated and total polyunsaturated fatty acids. The DHA content was also similar. However, eggs from farmed broodstock had significantly lower levels of AA, and consequently significantly higher EPA/AA ratios than eggs from wild broodstock. Total pigment and astaxanthin levels were significantly higher in eggs from wild broodstock. Therefore, the levels of AA and phosphatidylinositol, the predominant AA‐containing lipid class, and egg pigment content were positively related to egg quality or performance parameters such as fertilization and hatching success rates, and cell symmetry.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of high levels of n−3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n−3 HUFA) in broodstock diet on egg quality and chemical composition of eggs of Japanese flounder. The broodstock were fed diets containing three levels of n−3 HUFA (2.1%, 4.8% or 6.2%) 2 months before and during the spawning period. No significant difference was found for weight gain of broodstock among the treatments. Egg production was highest in fish fed the highest level of n−3 HUFA. However, egg quality parameters, such as percentage of buoyant eggs, hatching rate and percentage of normal larvae, were significantly higher in the group fed the lowest n−3 HUFA diet. The fatty acid composition of eggs was influenced more markedly in the neutral lipid fraction than in the polar lipid fraction by dietary n−3 HUFA levels. Arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4n−6) and egg quality parameters both decreased with increasing dietary n−3 HUFA levels. The results suggest that a high level of n−3 HUFA in broodstock diet negatively affects egg quality of Japanese flounder.  相似文献

研究了黄颡鱼受精卵孵化期间和仔鱼发育阶段脂肪含量和脂肪酸的组成变化规律.采用常规化学分析方法和气相色谱法对黄颡鱼从鱼卵受精开始至仔鱼孵化后未投饵的7 d内的脂肪含量和脂肪酸组成进行测定.结果表明,受精卵在整个孵化期间脂肪含量有下降趋势.受精卵中不饱和脂肪酸含量大于饱和脂肪酸含量.受精卵在整个孵化期间各种脂肪酸含量无明显变化.仔鱼孵化后,鱼体总脂肪含量急剧下降,总脂含量从0日龄的4.57%降低到7日龄的0.75%.仔鱼在饥饿期间鱼体脂肪酸组成发生明显变化,单不饱和脂肪酸含量下降最为明显,尤其是C18:1.仔鱼在饥饿期间,脂肪酸按n-9>n-6>n-3顺序被先后利用,黄颡鱼仔鱼发育阶段主要以单不饱和脂肪酸作为能量代谢基质,而C20:4n6(AA)和C22:6n3(DHA)优先于C20:5n3(EPA)被保存下来.  相似文献

Banded morwong (Cheilodactylus spectabilis) are of interest for marine finfish aquaculture in temperate southern Australia. To improve their ovulatory response, adult females were implanted during the autumn spawning season with slow‐release pellets containing 0–400 μg luteinizing‐hormone‐releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa)/kg body weight within 24 h of capture from the wild. Compared to the sham control group, animals treated with LHRHa produced significantly more eggs on each day after implantation for the following 7 d (91 ± 39 and 290 ± 38 mL) and a higher proportion ovulated (8/12 and 27/27). Of fish treated with LHRHa, 93% ovulated 2 d after implantation and 79% ovulated three times at 2‐d intervals, whereas control animals showed no cyclicity of ovulation and few ovulated more than once. Egg production was highest at the first ovulation after LHRHa treatment and declined at subsequent ovulations. In a second experiment investigating the range 100–400 μg LHRHa, there was no effect of dose rate on ovulation parameters, which additionally examined implantation either immediately after capture or after a 5‐d delay. Compared to immediate implantation, a delay resulted in a lower proportion of animals that could be stripped after implantation (100 and 50%, respectively) and the volume of eggs was lower (135 ± 15 and 107 ± 10 mL). The egg quality was poor following delayed implantation, resulting in no fertilization after artificial insemination compared with immediate implantation in which fertilization and hatch rates were higher for eggs collected on Day 2 after implantation (79 ± 8% and 58 ± 9%) than on Day 4 (23 ± 7% and 15 ± 6%). Thus, it is important to implant animals as soon as possible after capture to ensure optimum egg quality. Good‐quality eggs were buoyant and spherical and had a diameter of 1050 ± 25 μm with a single pigmented oil droplet of 190 ± 9 μm. When a separate large batch of eggs collected 2 d after implantation with 100 μg LHRHa was inseminated and cultured at 18 C, larvae hatched after 63 ± 2 h at a standard length of 2.6 ± 0.4 mm. Newly hatched larvae were buoyant and transparent with only a few melanophores, eyes were nonpigmented and jaws were nonfunctional. By the fourth day, jaws were functional and eyes were fully pigmented. Utilization of the endogenous yolk and oil was completed by Day 6, and swimming commenced with exogenous feeding. Larvae, initially fed lipid‐enriched rotifers followed by Artemia, reached 8.9 ± 0.7 mm length on Day 55, after which they metamorphosed to the postlarval paperfish stage of development, 22 ± 0.9 mm on Day 100, and 43 ± 1.0 mm at 6 mo of age. The results show that treatment of wild‐caught females with slow‐release pellets containing LHRHa is effective for the production of eggs for hatchery rearing.  相似文献
