A feeding protocol was developed for red drum larvae based on combining a commercial microparticulate diet (Kyowa Fry Feed) with live prey (rotifers) in a closed, water reuse system. In five trials, growth and survival were measured on larvae reared on a combination of live and microdiet for 1–5 d and then microdiet alone. Results in each trial were compared to control larvae reared on live rotifers Brachionus plicatilis and brine shrimp nauplii Artemia salinas. The most satisfactory combination was feeding live food and microdiet together for the first five days and then completely discontinuing live prey, eliminating the need to feed brine shrimp to the larvae. Growth rates of larvae fed progressively larger sizes of the microdiet were as good as larvae reared on live prey. Both groups metamorphosed to the juvenile stage at less than one month. Survival rates on the five day live food and microdiet combination were a remarkable 60% from egg to the juvenile stage. The successful weaning of red drum to microdiets paves the way to produce a semipurified diet to test nutrient requirements of larval fish.  相似文献

The relative contributions of live Artemia metanauplii and an inert diet for growth of Senegalese sole larvae and postlarvae were assessed through the analysis of carbon stable isotopes ratios (δ13C) in both diets and whole larval tissue. Larvae were reared on four dietary regimes: 100% live prey (rotifers and Artemia), 100% inert formulated diet and two co-feeding regimes of 70:30 and 30:70 ratios of Artemia and inert diet, respectively. Larvae from the live food regime and both co-feeding regimes showed a steep increase in δ13C from 10 days after hatching (DAH) as a result of the onset and continuation of Artemia consumption. From 12 DAH fish larvae from all the regimes showed significant isotopic differences as their δ13C increased to final asymptotic values of − 15.1, − 15.6 and − 16.3‰ in the live food, 70:30 and 30:70 regimes, respectively. Carbon turnover rates in larvae from both live food and co-feeding regimes were relatively high (0.071 to 0.116 d− 1) but more than 90% of the observed change in fish tissue isotopic values was accounted for by the retention of carbon in new tissue growth. A two-source, one-isotope mixing model was applied to estimate the nutritional contribution of Artemia and inert diet to postlarvae growth in the co-feeding regimes. At 23 DAH, the relative contribution of live and inert diets to tissue growth in larvae was respectively, 88 and 12% for the 70:30 co-feeding regime and 73 and 27% for the 30:70 co-feeding regime. At 17 DAH, the estimated proportion of tissue carbon derived from the inert diet was higher at 23 and 38% for the 70:30 and 30:70 regimes, respectively. The results suggest that co-feeding regimes in Solea senegalensis larvae may be adjusted to meet ontogenetic changes in the capacity for larvae to utilise inert diets. The contrasting levels of carbon isotope discrimination between diet and tissue in larvae reared on either 100% live feed or 100% inert diet indicate relatively poor utilization of nutrients from the inert diet. The use of isotopic discrimination factors as potential indicators of the digestive physiological performance of a consuming organism in regards to its diet is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of weaning strategies of cobia (Rachycentron canadum L.) larvae to commercial microdiets, either from rotifers or from Artemia, on growth, survival and enzymatic digestive capacity, were investigated. In the first experiment, cobia larvae were weaned from rotifers by co-feeding with a microdiet (Otohime) from 8, 13 or 20 days post-hatching (dph). The larvae in the control treatment were fed rotifers (2–12 dph), Artemia nauplii from 7 dph, and co-fed with the microdiet from 20 dph. In the second experiment, the larvae were weaned from Artemia, which was fed to the larvae from 7 dph, by co-feeding with a microdiet (NRD) from 8, 13 or 18 dph. The larvae in control treatment were fed rotifers, then Artemia to the end of the experiment (28 dph). Weaning of cobia larvae onto a microdiet directly from rotifers significantly reduced growth, survival and digestive capacity of the larvae and did not lead to larval acceptance of the microdiet, compared to those weaned from Artemia in the first experiment. Early weaning of cobia larvae onto NRD microdiet (on 8 or 13 dph) from Artemia in the second experiment also reduced growth, survival rate and gut maturation index, compared to those fed live feed. With available microdiets, weaning of cobia larvae could start from Artemia at around 18 dph in order to obtain comparable growth, survival and gut maturation to larvae fed live feed.  相似文献

The development of neutral lipase and phospholipase activities was studied in larval turbot fed live prey. Activities of neutral lipase and phospholipase (activity larva−1) increased significantly between days 6 and 24 after hatching in turbot larvae. The specific activities of both enzymes (activity μg protein−1) decreased in older larvae. Feeding of a microdiet for 3 days (days 10–13) affected the lipolytic activity of neutral lipase and phospholipase negatively, compared to the larvae fed on rotifers. Since neutral lipase activities in whole larval homogenates and in the gut were significantly lower, it suggests a reduced synthesis rate and a reduced secretion of the enzyme in larvae fed the microdiet. A correlation between neutral lipase and phospholipase activities was found in larvae fed rotifers, but not in larvae fed the microdiet. This may indicate different regulating and stimulating mechanisms for these enzymes. The contribution of exogenous enzymes from ingested live prey to the total larval enzyme activity was about 6% for neutral lipase and 10% for phospholipase on day 6. The exogenous prey enzymes accounted for only 2% of the total activities in 12-day-old turbot larvae, suggesting that enzymes from prey did not contribute considerably to the digestion of lipids. The gelatin-walled microencapsulated feed for larval shrimp (Penaeus japonicus) was produced using the fluidized bed coating process. The microencapsulated diet showed no significant agglomeration in the coating process and the diameters of the microdiet were in a normal distribution. Scanning electron microscopy microphotographs showed the appearance of a microencapsulated diet with a uniform surface and a continuous film around the core. The retention efficiency of vitamin C was 88.2% in the coating process. The inclusion efficiency, lipid encapsulation efficiency and nitrogen retention efficiency of the microdiet were 92.2 ± 1.6%, 76.8 ± 4.1% and 60.6 ± 5.2% respectively. The mysis α of P. japonicus were reared for 20 days to the later larval stage. The wet weight of larval shrimp increased 300.0% in the microdiet from 10 up to 30 day after hatching. The wet weight and the total length of larvae were greater in co-feeding compared with the control (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in larval survival between co-feeding and control (P>0.05). There were significant differences (P<0.05) in the wet weight, total length and survival in the microdiet compared with the control. The results indicated a huge potential for the use of the gelatin-walled microencapsulated diet for the partial and total replacement of live food for larval shrimp.  相似文献

Considering the well‐known problems arising from the use of rotifers and Artemia as live prey in larval rearing in terms of fatty acid deficiencies, the aim of this study was to evaluate a partial or complete replacement of traditional live prey with preserved copepods during the larviculture of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). Sea bream larvae were randomly divided into 4 experimental groups in triplicates: group A larvae (control) fed rotifers followed by Artemia nauplii; group B fed a combined diet (50%) of rotifers–Artemia and preserved copepods; group C fed rotifers followed by preserved copepods; and group D fed preserved copepods solely. Survival and biometric data were analysed together with major molecular biomarkers involved in growth, lipid metabolism and appetite. Moreover, fatty acid content of prey and larvae was also analysed. At the end of 40 days treatment, a stress test, on the remaining larvae, was performed to evaluate the effects of different diets on stress response. Data obtained evidenced a positive effect of cofeeding preserved copepods during sea bream larviculture. Higher survival and growth were achieved in group B (fed combined diet) larvae respect to control. In addition, preserved copepods cofeeding was able to positively modulate genes involved in fish growth, lipid metabolism, stress response and appetite regulation.  相似文献

Lipid Nutrition and Feeding of Cobia Rachycentron canadum Larvae   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This study examined the fatty acid composition of cobia Rachycentron canadum eggs and yolksac larvae, as well as the ovaries of wild caught females as an initial guide to lipid nutritional requirements. A 2-wk feeding study also was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of four dietary treatments on the growth and survival of cobia larvae. Cobia eggs in the tailbud stage contained 31.4 ± 1.3 μg lipid/egg. After hatching, the amount of lipid decreased significantly (P < 0.05) from 28.3 ± 0.3 to 23.2 ± 0.1 μg lipid/larvae during the yolksac larval stage (days 1 to 3 after hatching). Ovaries from wild caught adults and captive spawned eggs and yolksac larvae contained high levels of PUFAs with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and arachidonic acid (ARA) accounting for approximately 80% of the total suggesting that cobia larvae may have a high dietary requirement for these fatty acids. For the feeding study, larvae were fed: 1) Artemia only; 2) enriched rotifers for 1 d only + microparticulate diet (day 313); 3) enriched rotifers for 3 d (day 3–5) + Artemia (day 3–13); and 4) enriched rotifers for 6 d (day 3–8) + Artemia (day 3–13). Cobia larvae began feeding on rotifers 3 d after hatching and on newly hatched Artemia nauplii by the fifth day following the onset of exogenous feeding (day 7). On day 7, no differences in larval growth were found among larvae fed rotifers for 3 versus 6 d, whereas larvae fed only Artemia or rotifers for I d followed by microparticulate diet were significantly smaller (P < 0.05) and did not survive beyond day 9 and 13, respectively. The results of the feeding study indicate that cobia larvae require rotifers for a minimum of 4 d following the onset of exogenous feeding.  相似文献

The present study is the first to evaluate lipid metabolism in first-feeding Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT; Thunnus thynnus L.) larvae fed different live prey including enriched rotifers Brachionus plicatilis and Acartia sp. copepod nauplii from 2 days after hatch. Understanding the molecular basis of lipid metabolism and regulation in ABT will provide insights to optimize diet formulations for this high-value species new to aquaculture. To this end, we investigated the effect of dietary lipid on whole larvae lipid class and fatty acid compositions and the expression of key genes involved in lipid metabolism in first feeding ABT larvae fed different live prey. Additionally, the expression of lipid metabolism genes in tissues of adult broodstock ABT was evaluated. Growth and survival data indicated that copepods were the best live prey for first feeding ABT and that differences in growth performance and lipid metabolism observed between larvae from different year classes could be a consequence of broodstock nutrition. In addition, expression patterns of lipid metabolic genes observed in ABT larvae in the trials could reflect differences in lipid class and fatty acid compositions of the live prey. The lipid nutritional requirements, including essential fatty acid requirements of larval ABT during the early feeding stages, are unknown, and the present study represents a first step in addressing these highly relevant issues. However, further studies are required to determine nutritional requirements and understand lipid metabolism during development of ABT larvae and to apply the knowledge to the commercial culture of this iconic species.  相似文献

Abstract— The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of varying dietary levels of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in Live prey on the standard length, specific growth rate, survival, and fatty acid composition of yellowtail snapper Ocyurus chrysurus larvae. Two experiments were conducted utilizing rotifers and Artemiu enriched with live algae ( Isochrysis galbana or Nannochloris oculata ) or commercial preparations (Aquagrow Advantage, Aquagrow Advantage plus Aquagrow arachidonic acid, and Algarnac 2000). Larval growth and fatty acid composition were evaluated during the rotifer, B rachionus plicatilis , and Artemia feeding periods and survival rates were calculated at the termination of each trial (18 or 20 d after hatching). In general, prey enriched with the commercial products contained higher levels of docosahexaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, n-3 HUFA, and × HUFA than those enriched with live algae. The addition of arachidonic acid to the Aquagrow Advantage enrichment medium significantly increased the amount of this fatty acid in rotifers but not in Artemia . At the end of the growth trials, larval standard length was highest when larvae were fed prey enriched with I. galbanu (6.4 mm) or commercial preparations (6.7–7.1 mm) versus N. oculatu (5.2 mm). Furthermore, larvae fed prey enriched with commercial preparations had significantly ( P < 0.05) higher survival rates (2.2-5.9%) than those fed prey enriched with live algae (1.1-1.4%). These results suggest that yellowtail snapper larvae require dietary levels of HUFA beyond those achieved by enriching prey with live N. oculata or I. galbana  相似文献

Live prey used for marine larval fish (rotifers and Artemia) as well as intensive larval rearing conditions are susceptible to the proliferation of bacteria that are the cause for reduced growth and larval mortality. Hydrogen peroxide has been recently proved a good disinfectant in aquaculture, either for eggs, larvae or live prey. In this study the effects of a hydrogen peroxide‐based product, Ox‐Aquaculture©, on live prey (rotifers and Artemia) and meagre larvae bacterial load, composition and final status have been tested. A 34.6% reduction of total heterotrophic bacteria and 59.7% of Vibrionaceae were obtained when rotifers were exposed for 15 min to 40 mg L?1 of the product. A 34.3% reduction of total heterotrophic bacteria and 37.7% of Vibrionaceae were obtained when Artemia were exposed for 5 min to 8000 mg L?1 of the product. More than 95% reduction of total heterotrophic bacteria and 75% of Vibrionaceae were obtained when meagre larvae were exposed for 1 h to 20 mg L?1 of the product. Furthermore, disinfection of enriched live prey with the product did not change the fatty acid composition and survival of the live prey and improved final larval survival.  相似文献

Early weaning trials were conducted with cod larvae to investigate the effectiveness of microparticulate diets (microbound and microcoated) with and without lipid-walled capsules (LWCs). The microparticulate diets were evaluated by measuring physical parameters of the diet in the water column (leaching and settling rate), palatability (intestinal fullness), performance of the diet (survival and growth), and examination of the diet in the larval intestine (histological analysis). A feeding trial was conducted using four experimental diets (carrageenan microbound diet, carrageenan microbound diet with LWCs, zein microcoated diet and zein microcoated diet with LWC), one commercial diet (BioKyowa: A-250) and a live feed control (rotifers and Artemia ). Survival of cod larvae to 39 days post-hatch ranged from 5 to 10% with the experimental diets, 22.9% with the BioKyowa diet, and 36.5% with live prey. There was evidence of food absorption with all diets in the form of lipid vacuoles in the midgut and supranuclear vacuoles in the hindgut. Large vacuoles in the midgut were more abundant in the enterocytes of larvae fed the experimental diets compared with larvae on the BioKyowa diet and the live feed control. Based on observations of intestinal fullness, the experimental diets appeared to be less palatable than the BioKyowa diet. As a result, it took longer to wean the larvae and higher mortality was experienced during weaning. Once successfully weaned, the experimental diets yielded growth rates equivalent to larvae feeding on the commercial diet for the remainder of the experiment.  相似文献

The success of microdiets commonly used in the cultivation of marine fish larvae is limited to serving as partial replacements for live food. This limited success is thought to be associated with a reduced digestive ability due to an incompletely developed digestive system. The enhanced growth obtained from live food has been partially attributed to the digestive enzyme activity of the food organism. The present study was designed to test the effect of an exogenous digestive enzyme incorporated. into a microdiet on the growth of Sparus aurata. Larval gilthead seabream, 20–32 days old, were fed 14C labelled microdiets containing a commercial pancreatic enzyme at different concentrations (0, 0.1 and 0.05g / 100 g dry diet). Rates of ingestion and assimilation were measured and their relationship to dry weight was determined. Our results show that the success of the microdiet as a food for larval gilthead seabream was limited by the larva's low ingestion rate which only approached its maintenance requirement. In addition, the presence of digestive enzyme in the microdiet enhanced its assimilability by 30%. Larval growth over ten days was 0, 100 and 200% on microdiet free of added enzymes, one with added enzymes and a live food regime, respectively. It is our opinion that successful development of microdiets for Sparus aurata must be based on diets improved both in digestibility and attraction to the larvae. Further studies are now underway to determine the nutritional requirements of gilthead seabream larvae using the experimental method developed in the present study. Many coral reefs are threatened because of anthropogenic impacts such as destructive fishing methods for marine ornamentals. The marine ornamental industry is currently almost completely dependent upon wild collections. The development of commercially feasible methods to culture ornamental species could help to reduce the need for wild‐collected specimens and reduce pressure on coral reefs. Advances in larval rearing and nutrition would help overcome the bottlenecks that impede the commercial production of many marine ornamental species. This article focuses on research for improving the production of the fire shrimp, Lysmata debelius. Experiments were performed with larval fire shrimp to evaluate (1) the importance of essential fatty acid enrichment of live prey (rotifers and Artemia) and (2) feeding penaeid shrimp muscle tissue to improve survival to metamorphosis. We also provide the fatty acid composition of Day‐1 posthatch fire shrimp larvae. The enrichment of live prey with docosahexaenoic acid did not improve larval growth, survival, or time to metamorphosis, but larvae fed live prey together with pureed penaeid shrimp muscle had survival rates of 9.8 ± 1.2%. The data and protocols developed in this study provide a foundation and baseline for future fire shrimp larval studies.  相似文献

The indispensable AA profile of fish carcass has been commonly used as a good indicator of fish amino acids requirements. Amino acid composition of the whole body tissue of Diplodus sargus was determined for the larval ages of 0, 2, 5, 8, 12, 17, 25, 35 and 45 days after hatching (DAH). No significant differences were found during this species ontogeny, except for phenylalanine. A comparative analysis of amino acid profiles from larvae and respective diet was performed. Low correlation was found to rotifers (R2 approximately 0.5), while higher correlations were found for Artemia nauplli, metanauplii (R2 approximately 0.8) as well as for the dry feed. These results suggest that D. sargus are subjected to higher nutritional imbalances during the first 10 days of feeding when larvae are fed on rotifers alone. Arginine, threonine, lysine, cysteine and histidine appeared to be limiting amino acids at 2, 12, 25 and 45 DAH, respectively. Similar results were reported in literature for Sparus aurata and Solea senegalensis, although D. sargus diets seem to have more amino acids in deficiency as well as more severe differences between larval and diet amino acid profiles. To solve these apparent nutritional imbalances, amino acid supplementation should be considered. The use of inert diets in early larvae ages seems to be most adequate as live feed supplementation appears to be more difficult.  相似文献

The tongue sole Cynoglossus semilaevis, an inshore fish in China, has showed great potential in aquaculture recently. However, poor survival was recorded during the period of weaning from live Artemia to artificial diets. In this paper, the influence of co‐feeding larvae with live and inert diet on weaning performance was described. The C. semilaevis larvae were reared at 21 ± 1 °C and fed four different feeding regimes from 6 days post‐hatching (dph): A, Artemia (10 individuals mL?1); B, Artemia (5 individuals mL?1); C, mixed diet (10 Artemia individuals mL?1 and 12 mg L?1 inert diet); and D, mixed diet (5 Artemia individuals mL?1 and 12 mg L?1 inert diet). Rotifers were also supplied in all cases during the first days of feeding. Mixed diets of commercial formulated feed and live prey (rotifers and Artemia) allowed larvae to complete metamorphosis, achieving similar specific growth rate (SGR) (18.5 ± 1.4% and 18.7 ± 1.6%) and survival (40 ± 7.6% and 48.5 ± 6.8%) compared with larvae fed on live feed alone (SGR of 18.3 ± 1.2%, 19.3 ± 1.9% and survival of 41.2 ± 11.3%, 38 ± 4.9%). However, in metamorphosed fish, when live feed was withdrawn on 31 dph, there was significant difference (P < 0.05) in survival and growth among treatments. Metamorphosed fish, previously fed mixture diets during larval stages, had similar survival (62.1 ± 7.6% and 62.8 ± 3.9% for regimes C and D, respectively) but higher than that obtained for fish that previously fed on live feed (49.3 ± 2% and 42.1 ± 3.9% for regimes A and B, respectively) after weaning (day 60). The SGR of weaned fish previously fed live feed was similar (3.1 ± 0.6% and 2.92 ± 0.6% for regimes A and B, respectively) but lower than that recorded for fish that was fed from day 6 to day 30 on the mixed diet (4.5 ± 1.1% and 4.9 ± 0.3% for regimes C and D, respectively). It is suggested that weaning of C. semilaevis from early development would appear to be feasible and larval co‐feeding improves growth and survival.  相似文献

Weaning marine fish larvae from live prey to a dry microdiet is an important step towards optimizing the commercial production, but early weaning is constrained by the lack of sufficient digestive enzymes at first feeding. This study quantified the activity of five digestive enzymes throughout the larval period of pigfish (Orthopristis chrysoptera [L.]) to assess ontogenetic changes in digestive abilities, and then trials were conducted that determined the optimal time for weaning. The activity of all digestive enzymes was low or undetectable at first feeding (3 days post hatching, dph; 2.5 mm standard length, SL). A substantial increase in activity occurred at 5.7 mm SL (17 dph), 6.9 mm SL (21 dph), 7.7 mm SL (23 dph), 8.4 mm SL (25 dph) and 11.2 mm SL (30 dph) for bile salt‐dependent lipase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, amylase and acid protease respectively. During the weaning experiment, larvae were co‐fed live prey and microdiet beginning 15 dph (4.8 mm SL). Live prey was withdrawn from the diet at 24, 28, 32 or 36 dph, with the control receiving live prey and microdiet throughout (to 43 dph). There were no significant differences in mean final SL among treatments, but survival was significantly lower when larvae were weaned at 24 dph compared to 32–43 dph. Based on the digestive enzyme activity and survival, weaning larval pigfish at 32 dph (11.7 mm SL) when reared at 24°C is recommended.  相似文献

In three separate experiments, harpaticoid copepods Tisbe monozota (alive and dead) and a microparticulate microbound diet were evaluated as alternatives to live Artemia nauplii as food, beginning at either stage PZ2 or M1, in the larval culture of Litopenaeus vannamei. Larvae were cultured in 2 L round bottom flasks at a density of 150 L− 1 (Experiment 1) and 100 L− 1 ( 3.2 and 3.3) at 28 °C, 35‰ salinity and 12:12 LD photoperiod, and fed 4×/day- 1. Larvae were initially fed a mixture of phytoplankton to stages PZ2 or M1 and then fed either live Artemia, live or dead copepods, or a microparticulate microbound diet. The experiments were terminated and all larvae were harvested when more than 80% of larvae had molted to postlarvae 1 (PL1) within any flask representing any of the treatments. The comparative value of the different diets and feeding regimes was determined by mean survival, mean dry weight and total length of individual larva, and percentage of surviving larvae that were PL1. Trypsin activity of samples of larvae from each treatment was also determined. The microparticulate microbound diet effectively served as a complete substitute for Artemia nauplii when fed beginning at stage M1. When fed at the beginning of the PZ2 stage, survival was comparable to that of larvae fed Artemia, but mean dry weight, mean total length, and percent of surviving larvae that were PL1 generally were significantly less. Responses to the feeding of copepods, whether fed dead or live, as a substitute were generally significantly less than those of larvae fed either the Artemia nauplii or the microparticulate diet. Values of trypsin activity (10− 5 IU/μg- 1 dry weight) corresponded to the relative proportions of the different larval stages within a treatment, with higher activity being characteristic of early stages. Previously demonstrated successful results with another species of crustacean suggest that the microparticulate microbound diet has characteristics that should be effective in the culture of the carnivorous stages of other crustacean and fish larvae that are currently fed live Artemia nauplii.  相似文献

Experiments on the live food requirements of cultured turbot larvae are described. A mixture of six species of unicellular algae did not sustain early larvae, but the growth and survival of larvae fed with rotifers were considerably improved when the rotifers were feeding on Isochrysis galbana rather than on Dunaliella tertiolecta. Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) larvae offered alone or with rotifers, did not produce higher larval growth or survival than rotifers alone. Black tanks were found to be more suitable than white tanks for rearing larval turbot.  相似文献

Live prey used in aquaculture to feed marine larval fish – rotifer and Artemia nauplii – lack the necessary levels of n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n‐3 PUFA) which are considered essential for the development of fish larvae. Due to the high voracity, visual feeding in conditions of relatively high luminosity, and cannibalism observed in meagre larvae, a study of its nutritional requirements is needed. In this study, the effect of different enrichment products with different docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrations used to enrich rotifers and Artemia metanauplii have been tested on growth, survival, and lipid composition of the larvae of meagre. The larvae fed live prey enriched with Algamac 3050 (AG) showed a significantly higher growth than the rest of the groups at the end of the larval rearing, while the larvae fed preys enriched with Multigain (MG) had a higher survival rate. DHA levels in larvae fed prey enriched with MG were significantly higher than in those fed AG‐enriched prey. High levels of DHA in Artemia metanauplii must be used to achieve optimal growth and survival of meagre larvae.  相似文献
