Neosporosis is a polysystemic disease that can affect dogs of any age and can cause inflammation of the central nervous system. Antemortem diagnosis can be challenging, as clinical and conventional laboratory test findings are often nonspecific. A previous report described cerebellar lesions in brain MRI studies of seven dogs and proposed that these may be characteristic for central nervous system Neosporosis. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe MRI characteristics in another group of dogs with confirmed central nervous system neosporosis and compare them with the previous report. The hospital's database was searched for dogs with confirmed central nervous system neosporosis and four observers recorded findings from each dog's MRI studies. A total of four dogs met inclusion criteria. Neurologic examination was indicative of a forebrain and cerebellar lesion in dog 2 and multifocal central nervous system disease in dogs 1, 3, and 4. Magnetic resonance imaging showed mild bilateral and symmetrical cerebellar atrophy in three of four dogs (dogs 2, 3, 4), intramedullary spinal cord changes in two dogs (dogs 3, 4) and a mesencephalic and metencephalic lesion in one dog (dog 2). Multifocal brain lesions were recognized in two dogs (dogs 1, 4) and were present in the thalamus, lentiform nucleus, centrum semiovale, internal capsule, brainstem and cortical gray matter of the frontal, parietal or temporal lobe. Findings indicated that central nervous system neosporosis may be characterized by multifocal MRI lesions as well as cerebellar involvement in dogs.  相似文献

Objective: This case report describes the successful management of a dog with coma and respiratory depression due to severe baclofen intoxication. Case summary: A Doberman Pinscher mixed breed dog ingested 500 mg (20 mg/kg) of baclofen. Signs of severe intoxication included coma and profound respiratory muscle weakness. The dog was supported with positive pressure ventilation and treated with one session of hemodialysis. Weaning from the ventilator was achieved within 4 hours of hemodialysis, and recovery from coma occurred over the following 12–36 hours. The dog regained full neurologic function and was normal at discharge following 3 days of hospitalization. New or unique information provide: Severe central nervous system depression and respiratory depression due to baclofen intoxication can be life threatening. In addition to other supportive care, hemodialysis may hasten recovery and ventilatory support may be essential to achieve a positive outcome. With successful treatment, toxicity can be decreased and the associated life‐threatening central nervous system and ventilatory depression can resolve. Prognosis for return of normal function is excellent.  相似文献

Extracranial metastasis of primary central nervous system neoplasms is uncommon and has not been described in the dog. We report the clincopathologic features of intracranial meningioma with pulmonary metastasis in three dogs (case No. 1: 13-year-old castrated male Boxer dog; case No. 2: 14-year-old spayed female Dachshund; case No. 3: 6-year-old spayed female German Shepherd Dog). Case No. 1 presented with ataxia, lethargy, vomiting, and leaning and falling to the right, and had a transient remission following radiation and corticosteroid therapy; case No. 2 had a history of seizures that were unresponsive to primidone, left-sided postural reaction deficits, ataxia, and circling to the right; case No. 3 had only intermittent episodes of vomiting Computed tomography of case Nos. 1 and 2 revealed peripherally located homogeneous contrast-enhancing intracranial masses. Postmortem examination revealed intracranial masses with single or multiple pulmonary nodules in all three cases. Histologically, the intracranial and pulmonary masses were meningotheliomatous meningiomas with atypical features including brain infiltration, necrosis, nuclear atypia, prominent nucleoli, and moderate cell density. All of the primary meningiomas had low mitotic rates. The current interest in early diagnosis and aggressive clinical/surgical management of canine patients with meningioma and other primary central nervous system neoplasms will likely result in an increased detection of extracranial metastases.  相似文献

This report describes the morphological and immunohistochemical findings in an approximately 7-year old wild European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) with an infiltrative primary central nervous system T cell lymphoma. The roebuck had lost its timidity and was shot by a hunter. It was submitted for necropsy to exclude rabies. Gross examination revealed besides a verminous pneumonia no abnormal findings. Histologically, there was a highly cellular, not well demarcated, unencapsulated, and infiltrative neoplasm within basal parts of the brain. Tumour cells were round, up to 15μm in diameter and loosely arranged in sheets with a multifocally predominant perivascular infiltration. Immunohistochemically, tumour cells were positive for CD3 antigen. Whilst secondary lymphomas of the central nervous system emerge by metastatic seeding of tumour cells, primary lymphomas originate within the neuroparenchyma. This is the first report of a primary central nervous system lymphoma in an European roe deer.  相似文献

In this report, we describe a case of retrobulbar abscessation in a dog that was initially diagnosed as masticatory myositis and treated with immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids. Secondary bacterial infection of the central nervous system (CNS) occurred and was definitively diagnosed by the analysis and culture of the cerebrospinal fluid. This is the first time that retrobulbar infection has been definitively shown to result in secondary bacterial infection of the CNS in the dog and highlights the importance of ruling out infectious causes of retrobulbar disease before assuming and treating for an immune-mediated etiology.  相似文献

Gliomatosis cerebri is a rare tumourous disease of the central nervous system consisting of glial cells characterized by diffuse widespread infiltration and preservation of preformed brain structures. This report describes a case of gliomatosis cerebri in a 9-year-old, male, flat-coated retriever dog with central nervous symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain demonstrated ill-defined hyperintense zones of paramedian white matter within the right cerebral hemisphere, brainstem and cerebellum. Histological examination showed a proliferation of tumour cells in the brain structures mentioned. Glial fibrillary acidic protein-immunohistochemistry revealed a lot of fibres positively stained. Based on these findings, the alteration was diagnosed as gliomatosis cerebri.  相似文献

Primary brain tumours of a single histological type and metastatic brain tumours are well described in dogs in the current veterinary literature. However, the concurrent presence of a primary and secondary tumour in the brain of a dog has never, to the authors' knowledge, been previously reported. The clinical and pathological features of a nine-year-old, female boxer with an oligodendroglioma and metastases from a mammary gland adenocarcinoma occurring simultaneously in the brain are described in this case report. Information in the veterinary literature on multiple malignancies affecting the central nervous system is very limited; therefore, a discussion about comparative situations in human medicine has been included.  相似文献

An infiltrative granular cell tumor (myoblastoma) occurred in the superficial parieto-occipital cortex of an ataxic 12-year-old dog. The neoplasm was characterized by cells with numerous small PAS-positive, diastase-resistant cytoplasmic granules. The neoplasm also had numerous cells with large globular PAS-positive bodies (angulate bodies). Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells were characterized by numerous homogenous electron-dense, sharply bounded granules and large pleomorphic, indistinctly bounded granules. The angulate bodies were composed of 8- to 10-nm fibrils, a few of which formed parallel arrays or tubule-like structures. This represents the first report of a granular cell tumor in the central nervous system of the dog.  相似文献

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors are composed of primitive neuroepithelial cells and include tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system. Neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma and retinoblastoma are examples of these rare malignant tumors that usually occur in young patients. This report describes aperipheral neuroblastoma in a 2 year old Boxer that presented with signs of renal disease and a palpable abdominal mass. The purpose of this paper is to describe the clinical presentation, imaging and immunohistological studies of this abdominal tumor in a young dog and to review the literature.  相似文献

A 10-week-old intact male Labrador retriever dog was presented for acute onset of weakness, ataxia, and generalized muscle tremors. The puppy was suffering respiratory and central nervous system (CNS) depression, was mildly pyrexic, and vomited plant material that was identified as creeping nightshade (Solanum dulcamara). He responded well to supportive care and was discharged successfully. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of Solanum dulcamara toxicity occurring in a dog.  相似文献

Objective: To report a dog experiencing full recovery after delayed neurological sequelae secondary to smoke inhalation, and to review the related literature. Case summary: A 1‐year‐old Australian shepherd dog was found unconscious in a house fire. Although recovery after initial therapy was reportedly complete, the dog's condition acutely worsened 4 days later and progressed to stupor and non‐ambulatory tetraparesis with subsequent pneumonia. Therapy was successful, and the dog regained full neurologic function after approximately one week. New or unique information provided: Delayed neurologic sequelae may occur in dogs after smoke inhalation (and presumably carbon monoxide) injury. Neurologic recovery can be complete and sustained, even with severe central nervous system dysfunction.  相似文献

A two-year and seven-month-old, castrated male border collie was presented for a two-month history of progressive neurological signs including blindness, ataxia, dementia, and partial seizures. A complete blood count, serum biochemical profile, urinalysis, thoracic radiographs, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis were within reference ranges. Computed tomography (CT) of the brain showed dilatation of the ventricles and atrophy of the cerebral cortex. A central nervous system (CNS) storage disease was suspected, and the dog was euthanized due to a poor prognosis. Light and electron microscopic examination revealed neuronal degeneration with pigment accumulation in neurons of the CNS, in ganglia of the peripheral nervous system, and in several non-nervous tissues. Ceroid lipofuscinosis was diagnosed based on the microscopic and ultrastructural lesions detected. This is the second report of CT findings in a canine clinical patient with ceroid lipofuscinosis.  相似文献

Occipital dysplasia was found in association with cervical spinal cord abnormalities in two dogs. One dog presented for tetraparesis and cervical hyperesthesia, the other for historical cervical hyperesthesia and mild paraparesis. In dog 1, a midline cervical spinal cord defect consistent with a communicating syrinx was found. In the other dog, a presumptive syringo/hydromyelia of the cervical spinal cord was found on magnetic resonance imaging. While occipital dysplasia alone is not thought to cause any clinical abnormalities, the dogs of this report suggest that intramedullary central nervous system abnormalities may be present concurrently with occipital dysplasia and should be considered as a possible cause of the clinical signs. The relationship between occipital dysplasia and syringo/hydromyelia in these dogs remains unclear, however, similar associated abnormalities are occasionally found in humans with Chiari malformation.  相似文献

A 13‐year‐old, female spayed, crossbreed dog of 32 kg was presented for evaluation of peracute onset of non‐ambulatory tetraparesis after chewing an electrical wire. Neurological examination was consistent with a C1‐C5 myelopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a focal intramedullary lesion over the C2‐C3 vertebral bodies, which was confirmed to be an acute focal necrotising poliomyelopathy with subarachnoid and subdural haemorrhages on postmortem examination. This report describes the clinical, imaging and histopathological findings of this unusual type of spinal cord injury, and the effects of electrocution in the central nervous system of dogs.  相似文献

An unusual case of unilateral trigeminal neuronopathy in a dog is reported, in which the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve and the ipsilateral corticospinal tract were destroyed, apparently by a cerebrovascular accident (stroke). Hemiplegia did not occur. Neuropathological changes are described, including remyelination by Schwann cells in the central nervous system. The case illustrates the importance of central nervous system post-mortem examination when establishing causes of cranial nerve paralysis.  相似文献

A mixed inflammatory cell pleocytosis was identified in a cytocentrifuged sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and diagnosis of histoplasmosis was made on the basis of finding Histoplasma capsulatum organisms within macrophages. Cerebrospinal fluid collection is fundamental to the investigation of central nervous system disorders although it carries potential risks. Herein we report the clinical signs and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings associated with needle injury to the brainstem during cerebellomedullary cistern puncture in four dogs. Three dogs were nonambulatory tetraparetic with cranial nerve deficits and one dog had unexplained left thoracic limb paresis. In MR images, there were conspicuous T2 hyperintensities in the myelencephalon in all dogs. In T2* gradient echo images, the lesions were hypointense in two dogs with multiple cranial nerve deficits, and hyperintense in another dog. One dog was euthanized due to sudden neurologic deterioration 12 days later, one died shortly after MR imaging, and a third was euthanized due to concurrent cervical spondylomyelopathy. The fourth dog recovered gradually. Diagnosis was confirmed histopathologically in one dog and was presumptive based on clinical signs and MR findings in three dogs. None of the dogs with cranial nerve deficits recovered, only the one dog with left thoracic limb paresis and concurrent syringomyelia.  相似文献

A 2-year-old, castrated male, Australian shepherd was presented with a history of chronic mild ataxia, obesity, and lethargy. The dog was treated with levothyroxine, but the ataxia worsened. Cranial nerve abnormalities developed and the dog was euthanized. Postmortem examination revealed marked thyroid gland atrophy and widespread, severe central nervous system atherosclerosis.  相似文献

Gliomatosis cerebri (GC) is a rare, diffusely infiltrating, glial cell tumour of neuroepithelial origin. This report describes a case of oligodendroglial GC in a 6-year-old male Poodle with central nervous system symptoms. Computed tomography revealed anomalous parenchyma density and ventricular asymmetry. Cerebrospinal fluid showed elevated protein (30 mg dL(-1)) and nucleated cell count (20 μL(-1)). Presumptive diagnosis of necrotizing meningoencephalitis was made. Because of rapid deterioration of the general condition of the animal, the dog was euthanized. Histologically there was an infiltration of round or ovoid neoplastic cells in the white matter of the left cerebral hemisphere and in leptomeninges. Immunohistochemistry showed that 80% of the neoplastic cells expressed Olig2 and some 50% expressed glial fibrilary acidic protein. On the basis of clinical, histological and immunohistochemical features, a diagnosis of oligodendoglial GC was done. This case represents the first report of a case of oligodendroglial GC in the canid.  相似文献
