Aminoglycoside nephrotoxicosis (AGNT) was induced in ewes by daily SC administration of gentamicin. Changes in urinary indices of renal function during the development of AGNT are reported. Measurements from timed, volume-measured urine samples were made on days 0, 7, and 8 and included creatinine clearance, total excretion (TE) rates of electrolytes (Na, K, Cl, P) and urine volume. Measurements from free-catch urine samples (without volume measurement) were made daily and included fractional excretion (FE) rate of electrolytes, urine osmolality, and urine-to-serum osmolality and urine-to-serum creatinine ratios. With the onset of AGNT, FE rates of Na, K, Cl, and P- increased many fold above baseline values (200x, 4 to 5x, 6 to 9x, and 70 to 95x, respectively, on days 7 and 8), indicating decreased tubular reabsorption or increased tubular secretion. The increased FE rates were not representative of increases in total electrolyte excretion rates. The total excretion of Na (TENa) was mildly increased, TEK was decreased, TECl was unchanged, and TEP was significantly increased on days 7 and 8. Abnormal urinalysis results, glucosuria, and increased FEP preceded appreciable increase in serum creatinine concentration. Other abnormal urinary indices of renal function coincided with or followed the increase in serum creatinine concentration. Urinary indices may help characterize renal function associated with the disease state, but did not provide early indication of AGNT.  相似文献

The correlation between 24-hour urinary excretion of N -acetyl-β- d -glucosaminidase (NAG) and γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) with urine NAG and GGT/creatinine ratios was assessed in dogs with gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicosis. Eighteen 6-month-oid male Beagles with normal renal function were randomly divided into 3 groups of 6. Each group was fed a different concentration of protein (high protein, 27.3%; medium protein, 13.7%; and low protein, 9.4%) for 21 days. After dietary conditioning, gentamicin was administered at a dose of 10 mg/kg IM tid for 8 days and each group was continued on its respective diet. Endogenous creatinine clearance and 24-hour urinary excretion of NAG and GGT were determined after dietary conditioning (day 0) and on days 2, 4, 6, and 8 of gentamicin administration. In addition, urine NAG and GGT/creatinine ratios (IU/L ± mg/dL) were determined from catheterized spot urine samples obtained between 7 and 10 am on the same days. The correlation between 24-hour urinary enzyme excretion and urine enzyme/creatinine ratio in the spot urine samples was evaluated by simple linear regression analysis. Spot sample urine enzyme/creatinine ratios were significantly correlated with 24-hour urinary enzyme excretion through day 4 for dogs on low dietary protein, through day 6 for those on medium protein, and through day 8 for those on high dietary protein. Mean ± SD baseline values for urine NAG/creatinine ratio and 24-hour urinary NAG excretion were 0.06 ± 0.04 and 0.19 ± 0.14 IU/kg/24 hr, respectively. Baseline values for urine GGT/creatinine ratio and 24-hour urinary GGT excretion were 0.39 ± 0.18 and 1.42 ± 0.82 IU/kg/24 hr, respectively.  相似文献

gamma-Glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) activity in equine urine was measured, using an assay developed for use with serum and was found to be reproducible. The GGT activity was measured in samples prepared by serial dilution of exogenous GGT with equine urine, and the activity was determined to be linear between 21 IU/L and 407 IU/L. The behavior of exogenously added GGT was compared in equine serum and urine. The enzyme behaved similarly in both fluids. The GGT activity was measured in serum and urine samples after storage at -20, 4, and 25 C for 24 and/or 72 hours. Enzyme activity decreased after storage at all temperatures and times, but the decrease was greatest and most variable at -20 C. The urine GGT: urine creatinine ratio was calculated on serial urine samples collected over 24 hours. Although the urine GGT activity and creatinine concentration had significant variation, the ratio remained constant. The urine GGT: urine creatinine ratio was calculated from random urine samples collected from 27 clinically healthy adult horses and was found to be 10.52 +/- 4.78 (mean +/- SD).  相似文献

This paper describes the clinicopathological findings in sheep with AA amyloidosis. Serum samples from 12 AA amyloid-affected sheep and urine samples from 5 of these ewes were analyzed. In sera, the most important alteration was reflected in hypoalbuminemia, high concentration in beta and gamma-globulins and high levels of serum BUN, phosphorous and potassium. Serum creatinine, cholesterol and calcium concentrations showed no alterations. Urinary analysis showed proteinuria and a high protein/creatinine ratio. In three urine samples, high activities of urinary enzymes gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), beta-glucuronidase (GRS) and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) were observed, their ratios with urinary creatinine being increased for GGT and NAG and decreased for GRS. In conclusion, important alterations in biochemical and urinary parameters were observed in ovine affected by systemic AA amyloidosis. Those related to the activities of urinary enzymes could constitute reliable parameters for assessing renal injury in ovine AA amyloidosis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate renal function in healthy dogs undergoing general anesthesia and ovariohysterectomy without concurrent IV administration of fluids. ANIMALS: 35 healthy client-owned dogs. PROCEDURE: Dogs were medicated with promazine hydrochloride (0.05 mg/kg of body weight, SC) approximately 45 minutes before induction of anesthesia with thiopental sodium (10 to 15 mg/kg, IV). Anesthesia was maintained with 2% halothane in oxygen. Ovariohysterectomies were performed by senior veterinary students under the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon. Renal function was assessed (serum urea and creatinine concentrations, fractional clearance of sodium, urine alkaline phosphatase [ALP] and gamma-glutamyltransferase [GGT] activities, urine specific gravity, and enumeration of renal tubular epithelial cells in urine sediment) prior to and 24 and 48 hours after surgery. RESULTS: Duration of general anesthesia ranged from 80 to 310 minutes. Urine specific gravity and ALP activity and serum urea and creatinine concentrations did not change over time. Fractional clearance of sodium decreased 24 and 48 hours after surgery, whereas urine GGT activity and the ratio of urine GGT activity to urine creatinine concentration increased 24 hours after surgery, compared with presurgery values. Renal tubular epithelial cells increased in number in urine sediment from 11 of 35 (31.4%) dogs and 5 of 35 (14.3%) dogs 24 and 48 hours after surgery, respectively. However, this increase was not clinically relevant. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Intravenous administration of fluids to healthy dogs undergoing general anesthesia and elective surgery may not be necessary for maintenance of renal homeostasis.  相似文献

Serum and urinary biochemical changes were recorded in 5 ponies in which acute tubular nephrosis had been induced over 5 days with mercuric chloride and potassium dichromate. Serum osmolality, the serum concentrations of urea nitrogen, creatinine, sodium, potassium and chloride, and blood pH and blood gases were measured daily for 14 days or until humane euthanasia was performed. Levels of the same substances were quantitated daily in urine. In addition, routine urinalyses and determination of urinary gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity were performed on each sample. Changes in the values of the urinary variables preceded alterations in the serum value of the same substance by at least one day. The first notable abnormality detected was in urinary GGT activities. These changes occurred up to 6 days before the detection of azotemia. It was concluded that acute equine renal injury could be diagnosed earliest with biochemical testing of urine. Measurement of urinary GGT levels represents a means by which proximal tubular disease in equidae could be diagnosed in its developmental stages.  相似文献

The aminoglycoside gentamicin is often used in equine practice. Despite its clinical use, concerns remain regarding the potential toxic side-effects, such as nephrotoxicity, in equine patients, particularly after repeated dosing. The aim of the study was to investigate first in vitro the mechanisms contributing to the renal toxicity of gentamicin and to identify sensitive biomarkers indicating proximal tubule damage. To this end, the kidney-derived cell lines LLC-PKI and MDCK were treated with gentamicin at different concentrations. Toxicity was assessed by measuring the release of gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Cell viability was measured using Alamar blue (AB) and Neutral red (NR) cytotoxicity assays. Gentamicin exerted a dose-dependent toxicity. Primarily, loss of brush border membrane integrity, indicated by GGT leakage, and an increased ROS production were observed. As GGT was found to be a sensitive marker for gentamicin-induced renal cell injury, in the subsequent in vivo experiments, in which ponies were given gentamicin (3.0 mg/kg bw three times daily and 4.5 mg/kg bw twice daily) for five consecutive days, plasma levels and the urinary excretion of GGT and creatinine were measured and the GGT:creatinine ratio was calculated. Elevated GGT levels in urine following gentamicin therapy were observed, but this enzyme leakage was transient and returned to baseline values after cessation of therapy. It could thus be concluded that even a conservative dose regimen of gentamicin did not result in significant renal toxicity in healthy ponies.  相似文献

Analysis of hepatic enzyme activities in serum samples from 1- to 3-day-old pups revealed alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities that were 30 times higher and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) activities that were 100 times higher than activities in clinically normal adult dogs. A study was conducted to investigate high enzyme activity in pups and to determine whether there is any association between serum enzyme activity and colostrum ingestion, passive transfer of maternal serum enzyme (in colostrum or in utero), or excessive renal or hepatic tissue enzymes. Serum enzyme activity was quantified in 15 neonatal pups before and after ingestion of colostrum and in 3 colostrum-deprived neonates fed a milk substitute. Serum samples were collected on postpartum days 0, 1, 10, 15, and 30. Enzyme activity was also quantified in serum from pregnant and lactating bitches (collected on days -2, 0, 1, 10, 30), hepatic and renal tissue from clinically normal adult dogs and 1-day-old pups, colostrum, milk (collected on days 10 and 30), and milk replacer. Significant (P less than 0.01) differences in serum GGT and ALP activities between colostrum-deprived and suckling pups did not exist before initial feeding. Significant (P less than 0.001) increases in serum GGT and ALP activities developed within 24 hours in suckling pups, but not in the colostrum-deprived pups. At 10 and 30 days after birth, serum GGT and ALP activities were less than values before suckling in all pups. Enzyme activities in bitches' serum remained within the normal range for adult dogs throughout whelping and lactation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Haematological variables and selected serum indices, particularly those affected by changes in renal and hepatic function, were examined in 6 healthy ponies following 4 intramuscular doses of 4 mg/kg imidocarb dipropionate administered every 72 hours. This treatment regime has been reported to sterilise experimental Babesia equi infections in horses and may have value in preventing the spread of this disease during exportation of possible carrier horses to non-endemic countries. Serum bile acids and serum gamma glutamyltransferase activity were measured to evaluate the effect of this treatment regime on hepatic function. Owing to the absence of any increase in these variables it was concluded that this treatment regime had no clinically detectable deleterious effect on hepatic function in healthy ponies. Urinary gamma glutamyltransferase : creatinine ratios (IU/g), serum creatinine and fractional clearance of sodium, potassium and phosphate (%) were calculated as a measure of renal function. Urinary GGT and urinary GGT : creatinine ratios were significantly elevated on Day 5 of the trial, with 2 of the trial animals also exhibiting mild azotaemia indicative of changes in renal function. The changes in urine GGT : urine creatinine ratios observed in this study also provides evidence of the value of this ratio for the early detection of renal toxicity, following exposure to nephrotoxic agents.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate renal effects of carprofen in healthy dogs following general anesthesia. DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial. ANIMALS: 10 English hound dogs (6 females and 4 males). PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly assigned to control (n = 5) or carprofen (5) groups. Anesthesia was induced with propofol (6 to 8 mg/kg [2.7 to 3.6 mg/lb] of body weight, i.v.) and maintained with isoflurane (end-tidal concentration, 2.0%). Each dog underwent two 60-minute anesthetic episodes with 1 week between episodes, and mean arterial blood pressure was maintained between 60 and 90 mm Hg during each episode. Dogs in the carprofen group received carprofen (2.2 mg/kg [1 mg/lb], p.o.) at 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM the day before and at 7:00 AM the day of the second anesthetic episode. Glomerular filtration rates (GFR) were determined during each anesthetic episode by use of renal scintigraphy. Serum creatinine and BUN concentrations and the urine gamma-glutamyltransferase-to-creatinine concentration (urine GGT:creatinine) ratio were determined daily for 2 days before and 5 days after general anesthesia. RESULTS: Significant differences were not detected in BUN and serum creatinine concentrations, urine GGT:creatinine ratio, and GFR either between or within treatment groups over time. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Carprofen did not significantly alter renal function in healthy dogs anesthetized with propofol and isoflurane. These results suggest that carprofen may be safe to use for preemptive perioperative analgesia, provided that normal cardiorespiratory function is maintained.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: A safe, affordable and effective treatment for endotoxaemia in horses is needed in order to reduce the incidence of this potentially fatal condition. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of polymyxin B (PMB) on signs of experimentally-induced endotoxaemia. HYPOTHESIS: PMB ameliorates the adverse effects of endotoxaemia without causing nephrotoxicity. METHODS: Four groups of 6 healthy mature horses each received 20 ng endotoxin/kg bwt i.v. over 30 mins. Additionally, each group received one of the following i.v.; 5000 u PMB/kg bwt 30 mins before endotoxin infusion; 5000 u PMB/kg bwt 30 mins after endotoxin infusion; 1000 u PMB/kg bwt 30 mins prior to endotoxin infusion; or saline. Clinical response data and samples were collected to determine neutrophil count, serum tumour necrosis factor (TNF) activity, plasma thromboxane B2 concentration and urine gamma glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) to creatinine ratio. RESULTS: Treatment with PMB before or after administration of endotoxin significantly reduced fever, tachycardia and serum TNF, compared to horses receiving saline. The differences in response to endotoxin were greatest between horses that received saline vs. those that received 5000 u PMB/kg bwt prior to endotoxin. Urine GGT:creatinine did not change significantly. CONCLUSIONS AND POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: This study indicates that PMB may be a safe and effective treatment of endotoxaemia, even when administered after onset. Although nephrotoxicity was not demonstrated with this model, caution should be exercised when using PMB in azotaemic patients.  相似文献

Urinary concentrations of gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (AP), aspartate aminotransferase (AsAT), and alanine aminotransferase (AAT) were measured in 32 healthy horses (16 geldings and 16 females) at the same time on 2 consecutive days. The subjects were divided into 4 ages groups, each comprising 8 horses (4 of each sex). In 10 of the geldings, urine was collected continuously for 72 hours, with catheterized samples being obtained at 0800, 1400 and 2000 hours, and an aliquot of the pooled urine being taken every 24 hours. Urinary enzyme activity was found to be unrelated to serum concentrations of the same enzymes. There was no diurnal variation in the activity of the urinary enzymes. Neither the sex of the horses nor their age influenced urinary enzyme activity regardless of whether it was expressed in absolute terms or in reference to creatinine excretion Normal values of GGT and AP were determined to be 3.3 +/- 3.0 IU/L, (2.5 +/- 3.4 IU/g Cr); and 10.2 +/- 4.0 IU/L (6.7 +/- 3.9 IU/g Cr) respectively. Neither AAT or AsAT were present in detectable levels. The mean urine creatinine concentration of all horses was 1.56 +/- 0.42 g/L with no significant age or sex variation being evident.  相似文献

Pharmacokinetic disposition of gentamicin was studied in 69 dogs--12 control and 33 subtotally nephrectomized dogs representing combined data from previous experimental studies, and 24 dogs with a variety of diseases and degrees of renal dysfunction. Drug disposition varied considerably within and between diseases, and dosages had to be altered to achieve therapeutic drug concentrations and to minimize drug toxicosis. Decreased drug clearance when serum creatinine and urea nitrogen concentrations are normal may be indicative of subclinical renal disease and therefore may indicate a predisposition for development of nephrotoxicosis. Results of the study indicated the need to individualize aminoglycoside dosage regimens on the basis of pharmacokinetic disposition of drug, especially in dogs with preexisting subclinical renal dysfunction. Because of the large variability normally encountered in dogs with various diseases, monitoring of renal function alone is not sufficient to accurately predict gentamicin clearance, volume of distribution, or half-life.  相似文献

Changes in renal function, determined by pharmacokinetics of phenolsulfonphthalein (PSP), and renal morphologic features were examined in adult pony mares given 20 mg of gentamicin sulfate/kg of body weight, IV, q 8 h (group A) n = 7 or isotonic saline solution, IV, q 8 h, n = 5 (group B) for 14 days. Susceptibility of ponies to gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicosis was varied. Two group-A ponies developed acute renal failure and were euthanatized before treatment day 14, whereas 5 group-A A ponies did not develop physical or behavioral abnormalities after 14 days of gentamicin administration. All group-A ponies but none of group-B ponies developed ultrastructural abnormalities of the proximal tubular epithelium, consistent with gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicosis. Significant (P less than 0.05) differences were not detected in pharmacokinetic values of either group. Clearance of PSP was reduced in 4 group-A ponies that developed the most severe gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicosis. Changes in clearance of PSP were significantly (P less than 0.05) correlated with changes in the serum creatinine concentration.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To measure N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity in urine of cows with renal diseases and to correlate values for NAG activity with renal lesions. ANIMALS: 8 lactating Holstein cows and a Japanese Shorthorn cow, all of which had renal disease. PROCEDURE: Urine samples were collected, and urinary NAG activity and creatinine concentration were measured. The NAG activity was expressed as units per gram of creatinine (NAG index). Cows were euthanatized, necropsy was performed, and correlations between results for urinary NAG index and histopathologic findings for the kidneys were evaluated. RESULTS: The NAG activity and NAG index in urine samples obtained from cows with interstitial nephritis were high, ranging from 4.2 to 13.6 U/L and 3.5 to 23.0 U/g, respectively. A cow with renal amyloidosis also had high values for urinary NAG activity and NAG index. Histologic examination of the kidneys revealed various kinds of parenchymal lesions. However, urinary NAG index in cows with enzootic bovine leukosis was low. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Cows with renal diseases had high urinary NAG indexes that correlated well with their renal lesions, except for cows with enzootic bovine leukosis. Therefore, measurement of NAG index in urine samples has the potential to provide new perspectives on clinical diagnosis of renal disease in cattle.  相似文献

We examined the relationship between serum gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) activity and serum gamma immunoglobulin G (IgG1) concentration in Holstein calves. Blood samples were collected from calves aged 1 to 3 days. A follow-up sample was obtained from each calf 2, 7, or 15 days after the initial sampling. Serum GGT activity and lgG1 concentration were measured. Regression models were used to predict lgG1 concentration as a function of age and serum GGT activity measured 2, 7, or 15 days later.
Serum GGT activity and calf age at the time of the second sample were directly related to serum IgG1 concentration in the initial sample in calves aged 3 to 17 days ( r = .54) and in calves aged 3 to 10 days ( r = .63). Models were used to estimate the serum GGT activity equivalent to a serum IgG1 concentration of 1,000 mg/dL. One-day-old calves should have serum GGT activities > 200 IU/L. Four-day-old calves should have serum GGT activities > 100 IU/L. One-week-old calves should have serum GGT activities > 75 IU/L. Calves with serum GGT activities < 50 IU/L should be classified as having failure of passive transfer.  相似文献

Neomycin toxicosis in calves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Calves (n = 4) were given neomycin (2.25 or 4.5 mg/kg) twice daily IM and were compared with 2 calves given penicillin IM. The 2 hallmarks of aminoglycoside toxicosis, nephrotoxicosis and ototoxicosis, were seen with both dosages of parenterally administered neomycin. Nephrotoxicosis was confirmed by abnormal findings in urinalysis (granular casts, proteinuria, low specific gravity), renal biopsy results (tubular degeneration and necrosis), and increased 24-hour amounts of urinary enzymes (alanine aminopeptidase and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase). Azotemia, decreased creatinine clearance, polyuria, and polydipsia also were documented in calves given neomycin. Clinically, deafness was suspected in 2 calves and was documented by electrical auditory-evoked response tests. Abnormalities in partial thromboplastin times and renal residues of neomycin were seen in all 4 calves that were given neomycin, but not in calves that were given penicillin.  相似文献

Changes in renal fnction of twenty-two cats treated for hyperthyrodism using radioiodine were evaluated. Serum thyroxine (T4), serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and urine specificgravity were measured before treatment and 6 and 30 days after treatment. Twenty-two cats had pretreatment and 21 cats had 6 day posttreatment measurement of glomercular filtration rate (GFR) using nuclear medicine imaging techniques. there were significant declines in serum T4 at 6 days following treatment, but the changes in GFR, serum creatinine and BUN were not significant. At 30 days following treatment, there were significant increases in BUN and serum creatinine and further significant declines in serum T4. Nine cats were in renal failure prior to treatment and 13 cats were in renal failure 30 days following treatment. Renal failure was defined as BUN greater than 30 mg/dl and/or serum creatinine greater than 1.8 mg/dl with concurrent urine specific gravity less than 1.035. these 13 cats included eight of 9 cats in renal failure prior to treatment on 9 of these 13 cats indicated that all remained in renal failure. Based on receiver operating curve analysis of pretreatment glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in predicting posttreatment renal failure, a value of 2.25 ml/kg/min as a point of maximum sensitivity (100%) and spefificity (78%) was derived, Fifteen of 22 cats had pretratmentGFR measurements of less than 2.25 ml/kg/min. these 15 cats included all 9 cats in renal failure and 65 cats with normal renal clinicopathologic values prior to treatment. at 30 days following treatment, 13 of these 15 cats were in renal failure. The 2 cats not in renal failure had persistently increased serum T4 values. seven of 22 cats had pretreatment GFR measurements greater than 225 ml/kg/min. None of these 7 cats was in renal failure at 30 days following treatment, all cats having normal BUN, serum creatinine, and urine specific gravity values. It was concluded that significant declines in renal function occur after treatment of hyperthyroidism and this decline is clinically important in cats with renal disease. Pretreatment measurement of GFR is valuable in detecting subclinical renal disease and in predicting which cats may have clinically important declines in renal function following treatment.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the adverse effects of carprofen in dogs after oral administration for 2 months. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial. ANIMALS: 22 dogs with osteoarthritis in the hip or elbow joint. PROCEDURE: 13 dogs received orally administered carprofen daily for 2 months, and 9 dogs received a placebo for 2 months. Dogs were weighed, and serum and urine samples were collected before initiation of treatment and 4 and 8 weeks after initiation of treatment. Serum concentrations of total protein, albumin, urea, and creatinine and serum activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were measured. Urinary ALP-to-creatinine, gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT)-to-creatinine, and protein-to-creatinine ratios were calculated. Dogs were observed by owners for adverse effects. RESULTS: Serum protein and albumin concentrations were lower in treated dogs than in those that received placebo at 4 weeks, but not at 8 weeks. No changes were observed in serum urea or creatinine concentrations; ALP or ALT activity; or urinary ALP-to-creatinine, GGT-to-creatinine, or protein-to-creatinine ratios. Dogs' weights did not change. Severity of vomiting, diarrhea, and skin reactions did not differ between groups, but appetite was better in dogs receiving carprofen than in dogs in the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: It is possible that the transient decreases in serum protein and albumin concentrations in dogs that received carprofen were caused by altered mucosal permeability of the gastrointestinal tract because no indications of renal or hepatic toxicity were observed. Carprofen appeared to be well tolerated by dogs after 2 months of administration.  相似文献

A series of blood and urine samples was collected from each of eight normal foals between birth and eight weeks. Blood chemistry relating to renal function was evaluated as well as physical and chemical characteristics of urine. During the first 4d of life it was impractical to suggest meaningful normal values due to wide variation among foals and with time. Serum urea and plasma creatinine fell markedly to levels less than those previously reported for normal adult horses, while urine, mildly hypersthenuric at birth, rapidly became hyposthenuric. There was also a marked proteinuria during the first 48h. After 4d clinicopathological values stabilised. Urea and creatinine remained at subadult levels and hyposthenuria was maintained. While there was some variation with time, generally the urinary activity of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and alkaline phosphatase (AP) was greater in foals than in adults; plasma potassium, the creatinine clearance ratio of potassium (% Cr K), serum inorganic phosphate and the creatinine clearance ratio of phosphate (% Cr PO4) were greater than in adults while plasma chloride and the creatinine clearance ratio of chloride (% Cr Cl) were lower in foals than in adults. Urinary pH was acidic and epithelial cells and calcium oxalate crystals more prevalent in the urine of foals than in that of adults. The information presented here will be useful in the diagnosis and management of renal disease and azotaemia in foals.  相似文献
