The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate feline primary conjunctival vascular tumors of endothelial origin. Eight cases (six hemangiomas, two hemangiosarcomas) from a collection of 3460 feline submissions between 1993 and 2004 were evaluated using routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Signalment, location, size, duration, epithelial pigmentation, margins, adjuvant therapy, outdoor activity, and geographic location, comparing ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels by state, were recorded. Follow-up information was available for five cases. In this study, the average age was 10.6 years, with neutered males over-represented. The Domestic Short-haired cat was most commonly affected. The most common anatomic site was the nictitating membrane, with the left eye preferentially affected. The average size and duration, prior to presentation, was 7.5 mm and 4.4 months, respectively. Seven of eight cases were devoid of epithelial pigmentation in nonaffected areas and the majority of cases were from states with high annual UV-light exposure. Only cases of hemangiosarcoma underwent surgical re-excisions following incomplete excision; however, no further recurrences were reported. No cases evaluated had evidence of metastatic disease at the time of excision. Surgical excision alone may be curative. However, recurrence is possible. These tumors demonstrate similar predilection sites and involvement of nonpigmented epithelium, as is true in canine cases, which may relate to risk factors as well.  相似文献

The relationship between skin pigmentation and piliation and the development of hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue was studied in 212 dogs. These 212 dogs had a combined total of 306 tumors; 38 of these 212 dogs had two or more of the same tumor in a different location or a combination of hemangioma and hemangiosarcoma. The average age of the dogs at the time of excision of these tumors was greater than 10 years. There was no sex predilection for the presence or absence of tumors. Cutaneous hemangiomas (73%) were more common than cutaneous hemangiosarcomas (27%). Hemangiomas had no predilection for dermis (51%) or subcutaneous tissue (47%), but hemangiosarcomas had a marked predilection for dermis (73%) over subcutaneous tissue (7%). Dogs with short hair coats and lightly pigmented skin had more hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas of the dermis (65%) than did dogs with variable length hair coats and pigmentation (28%). Dogs with short hair coats and lightly pigmented skin had fewer hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas of the subcutaneous tissue (10%) than did dogs with variable length hair coats and pigmentation (22%). Dogs with short hair coats and lightly pigmented skin also had more hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas of ventral glabrous skin (65%) than did dogs with variable length hair coats and pigmentation (22%). In addition, there was no predilection of subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma for haired (33%) versus glabrous (33%) skin, but dermal hemangiosarcoma had a marked predilection for the glabrous skin (63%) when compared with haired skin (10%). The increased incidence of dermal hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas in ventral glabrous skin suggests an association between solar radiation and the biologic properties of glabrous skin in the genesis of these tumors.  相似文献

Cutaneous Hemangiosarcoma in 25 Dogs: A Retrospective Study   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Hemangiosarcomas confined to the skin and underlying muscle were surgically excised in 25 dogs. Tumors were staged based on their histological location (ie, dermal, hypodermal, and deep). Dermal (stage I) hemangiosarcomas were small, most commonly ventral-abdominal or preputial in location, and were associated with prolonged survival times (median survival, 780 days). Tumors with hypodermal (stage II) and underlying muscular involvement (stage III) were grouped together because of their larger size, bruise-like appearance, lack of anatomic predilection, biological behavior, and shorter survival times (median survival of 172 and 307 days for dogs with stages II and III, respectively). We conclude that dermal hemangiosarcomas may be effectively treated with surgery alone, whereas hemangiosarcomas located within the hypodermal tissues bear a poor prognosis and warrant wide surgical excision with adjuvant chemotherapy.  相似文献

Abstract. In a retrospective survey of caprine neoplastic disease, eight masses were diagnosed as cutaneous vascular tumors. The typical clinical presentation was a solitary raised, bleeding mass. No predilection with regard to age, breed, sex, or anatomic location was found. Reevaluation of the microscopic features of the masses resulted in diagnoses of hamartoma (2), hemangioma (4), and hemangiosarcoma (2). An endothelial cell origin was confirmed in all seven tumors tested immunohistochemically for factor VIII-related antigen. Although rarely reported, goats display a range of cutaneous vascular growth abnormalities similar to those observed in other domestic animals.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of different tumor types within a large cohort of cats with intracranial neoplasia and to attempt to correlate signalment, tumor size and location, and survival time for each tumor. Medical records of 160 cats with confirmed intracranial neoplasia evaluated between 1985 and 2001 were reviewed. Parameters evaluated included age, sex, breed, FeLV/FIV status, clinical signs, duration of signs, number of tumors, tumor location(s), imaging results, treatment, survival times, and histopathologic diagnosis. Most of the cats were older (11.3 +/- 3.8 years). Primary tumors accounted for 70.6% of cases. Metastasis and direct extension of secondary tumors accounted for only 5.6 and 3.8% of cases, respectively. Twelve cats (7.5%) had 2 or more discrete tumors of the same type, whereas 16 cats (10.0%) had 2 different types of intracranial tumors. The most common tumor types were meningioma (n = 93, 58.1%), lymphoma (n = 23, 14.4%), pituitary tumors (n = 14, 8.8%), and gliomas (n = 12, 7.5%). The most common neurological signs were altered consciousness (n = 42, 26.2%), circling (n = 36, 22.5%), and seizures (n = 36, 22.5%). Cats without specific neurological signs were common (n = 34, 21.2%). The tumor was considered an incidental finding in 30 (18.8%) cats. In addition to expected relationships (eg, meninges and meningioma, pituitary and pituitary tumors), we found that lesion location was predictive of tumor type with diffuse cerebral or brainstem involvement predictive of lymphoma and third ventricle involvement predictive of meningioma.  相似文献

Five horses presented with unilateral pink, smooth, nonulcerated conjunctival masses with histologic features characteristic of inflammatory pseudotumors, i.e. proliferative inflammatory lesions clinically resembling true neoplasia. Although causes for the inflammatory lesions were not determined, based on the presence histologically of mononuclear (predominantly lymphocytic) inflammatory cell infiltrates and the absence of infectious agents, parasites or foreign bodies, an immune-mediated pathogenesis was suspected. Affected horses ranged from 5 to 8 years of age with no apparent breed or sex predilection. Conjunctival lesions were nodular in two cases and relatively flat and more diffuse in three cases. Third eyelid lesions were present in three cases and two affected eyes had corneal involvement. Based on findings from these five cases, the prognosis for equine conjunctival pseudotumors appears to be good when lesions are treated by partial or complete surgical excision, local administration of anti-inflammatory agents, or a combination of surgery and anti-inflammatory therapy.  相似文献

Thirty-six cases of meningiomas in cats were reviewed as to the clinical signs and anatomic location. Age, breed, and sex also were noted. It was found that, in general, meningiomas affected older cats, with two thirds of them being greater than or equal to 10 years old. There was no breed predilection, although there was a majority of male cats. In most cases, the anatomic location was supratentorial, with only one case being infratentorial, and no tumors were below the foramen magnum. A number of cats had multiple maningiomas, and this often complicated the anatomic localization by neurologic examination. Tentorial herniation (6 cases) was associated with positional nystagmus or tetraparesis, or both, in addition to the deficits caused by the tumor.  相似文献

A retrospective epidemiologic study evaluated 1,129 feline intestinal tumor patients via data entered into the Veterinary Medical Database (VMDB) from 1964 to 2004. Cases were analyzed by breed, age, yr of diagnosis, tumor type, and location. The VMDB incidence of all intestinal tumors reported during this 40 yr period was 0.4%, with small intestinal tumors predominating. The most common intestinal tumor was lymphoma, but the most common nonlymphoid tumor was adenocarcinoma. The Siamese breed and increasing age after 7 yr conferred an increased risk. Intact males and females appeared to have a decreased risk compared with neutered patients, but this may be explained by the age difference among these patients as older patients were more likely to be neutered. Prospective studies evaluating neuter status predilection and prognosis are warranted.  相似文献

The recommended treatment for soft tissue sarcomas (STS) and mast cell tumors (MCT) is complete surgical removal, provided that the tumor is amenable to surgical excision. The objective of this study was to evaluate possible risk factors for incomplete surgical excision of skin and subcutaneous STS and MCT in 100 dogs treated with wide excision with curative intent. Decreased body weight was a risk factor (P = 0.03, odd's ratio = 0.96) as well as increased tumor size (1.4% increase in risk of incomplete excision per cm(2); P = 0.02). Gender, age, breed, location, grade, tumor type, re-excision, and level of surgeon's training (P = 0.0711) were not significant. Veterinary surgery residents were at increased risk of incompleteness of excision compared with ACVS surgeons and ACVS surgeons with additional training in surgical oncology.  相似文献

Seven cases of cutaneous hemangioma and nine of cutaneous hemangiosarcoma were diagnosed from biopsy specimens of 15 Domestic Shorthairs of 5,091 cats that were examined by necropsy or biopsy during the 5-year period from 1 January 1986 through 31 December 1990. All but three cats were male. Tumor cells of both hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas were immunoreactive for factor VIII-related antigen and for vimentin by the avidin biotin peroxidase complex method. In cats with a median age of 10 years, hemangiomas occurred in skin with pigmented hair in six of seven cases without apparent site predilection. These solitary tumors did not recur after excision although one cat (No. 3) subsequently developed cutaneous hemangiosarcoma at another site. Seven of nine hemangiosarcomas occurred in dermis and subcutis of the head, usually on the pinna. All five hemangiosarcomas of the head, for which cutaneous pigmentation could be determined, occurred in unpigmented skin. Cats with hemangiosarcoma had a median age of 12.5 years at the time of diagnosis. Metastasis has not been documented, but hemangiosarcoma has recurred, from 1 month to 2 years after excision, in 6/7 cats that were studied.  相似文献

The morphological features of iridociliary epithelial tumors in 100 dogs and 17 cats were reviewed. Twenty-seven cases were in either Golden Retrievers or Labrador Retrievers. Affected globes were stained for light microscopy with alcian blue, periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and hematoxylin and eosin stains. Selected tissues were examined by immunohistochemistry for vimentin, desmin, cytokeratin, S-100, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP). The presence or absence of hyaluronic acid was recorded by staining with alcian blue before and after digestion of the tissue with hyaluronidase. Canine tumors were divided into papillary and solid tumors based on the pattern of growth. Twenty-eight of 57 papillary tumors exhibited invasive behavior including eight of the 57 which showed infiltration of the sclera. Twenty-nine of 43 solid tumors were invasive including 13 of 43 with scleral invasion. Tumors with scleral invasion were designated adenocarcinoma. Tumors of both types could be pigmented or nonpigmented and often contained smooth basement membranes reminiscent of the inner membrane of the nonpigmented ciliary body epithelial cell. All of the feline tumors were nonpigmented and 14 of 16 feline tumors were solid and two of the tumors were papillary. Eighteen of 20 canine tumors and three of four feline tumors stained positive for vimentin. Cytokeratin stain was positive only in a few of the highly aggressive tumors. The finding of pigmented epithelial cells, thick, smooth basement membrane structures, positive staining for vimentin, S-100, and NSE as well as hyaluronic acid deposition were considered to be features which define iridociliary epithelial tumors in dogs. The positive staining for vimentin and NSE are highly specific markers which help to characterize iridociliary epithelium and distinguish this tumor from metastatic epithelial tumors. The finding of solid nonpigmented tumors with small epithelial cells packeted by thin PAS-positive membranes staining positive for vimentin were considered significant features defining iridociliary epithelial tumors in cats. Follow-up information on survival and cause of death was obtained on 43 canine cases and only two feline cases. The average follow-up interval in dogs was 25 months and only two dogs died with lesions that could have been due to metastasis although neither was confirmed. We concluded that neither iridociliary adenomas nor adenocarcinomas is likely to metastasize.  相似文献

Cases of hemangiosarcoma submitted to the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory during a 6-year period were reviewed. Visceral hemangiosarcomas represent less than 2% of canine specimens submitted for histologic examination and nonvisceral hemangiosarcoma less than 1%. Most nonvisceral hemangiosarcomas of dogs occur in skin. Hemangiosarcomas are less common in cats and usually occur in skin. They are also rare in other animal species. Animals with nonvisceral hemangiosarcomas are usually mature; dogs and cats average 10 years of age. The tumors develop in many different locations, and there is no sex predilection. A wide variety of dog breeds are affected, but Italian greyhounds, greyhounds, and whippets are overrepresented. Clinical outcomes of 76 cases of nonvisceral hemangiosarcomas in dogs and cats were obtained from submitting veterinarians. Completeness of excision of a tumor is the most important factor that can be used in predicting clinical outcome for an affected dog or cat. In all cases in which the animals were clinically normal for at least 1 year after surgical removal of a nonvisceral hemangiosarcoma, the margins were reported to be free of neoplastic cells. Degree of differentiation, mitotic rate, size of tumor, and presence or absence of epidermal ulceration, mast cells, or solar elastosis did not correlate with clinical outcome.  相似文献

Retrobulbar tumors in dogs and cats: 25 cases   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2
Twenty-five cases of retrobulbar tumors are presented and discussed. Affected animals were dogs and cats (average 10.7 years). No breed or sex predisposition was noted. The most common clinical signs were exophthalmos (84%), conjunctival hyperemia (40%), protrusion of the nictitating membrane (28%), exposure keratitis (20%) and fundus abnormalities (20%). Diagnostic tools included fine needle aspiration, radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography and histology. Surgical treatment by orbitotomy or exenteration was combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy in some cases. The prognosis was poor with low survival times: 1 month in cats, and 10 months in dogs, with a high rate of euthanasia (35%) at the time of diagnosis.  相似文献

Pyotraumatic dermatitis (hot spot) is a common clinical syndrome in dogs but there are few prospective scientific studies related to it. The aim of this study was to investigate correlations among clinical pyotraumatic dermatitis, histopathology of the lesions and possible predisposing causes. The relationship of these with breed, age, sex and location of lesion was assessed statistically. A clinical diagnosis of acute pyotraumatic dermatitis was made in 44 privately owned dogs. Males exceeded females (P = 0.0348) and lesions were more common in dogs aged 4 years or less (P < 0.0001). Lesions were most often seen on the cheek, neck and lateral thigh with a significant correlation between breed and site of lesion (P < 0.0001). In 31 cases a possible underlying cause was found or suspected. In contrast to previous studies, no otitis externa was recorded and the study was conducted in an area without endemic fleas. Fourteen breeds were represented of which Rottweiler, German shepherd dog and golden retriever were most common. There was no significant seasonal incidence and no correlation among site of lesion and cause, time of year, age or sex. Histopathologically, the dogs could be separated into four patterns by the presence or absence of eosinophils and/or folliculitis. Eosinophils have not previously been recorded in pyotraumatic dermatitis but were seen in 29 cases. Acute folliculitis was seen in 20 cases. However, no correlation was seen among age, sex, breed, underlying cause or site of lesion and histopathology. Twenty-seven cases were cultured for bacteria of which 25 grew Staphylococcus intermedius and two were negative.  相似文献

The aim of this case–control study was to evaluate and compare the bacterial microflora from the conjunctival sac of dogs with atopic dermatitis and healthy dogs. Twenty‐one atopic dogs without clinical and/or cytopathological signs of bacterial blepharoconjunctivitis and 21 breed‐matched healthy dogs were enrolled. Under topical anaesthesia, the inferior conjunctival sac of one eye was scraped twice. Material was collected with a Kimura spatula, spread over a slide and stained with a Diff Quick®‐type stain (Medion Diagnostics GmbH, Düdingen, Switzerland) for cytological examination. An area of 0.5 cm2 was examined at ×1000 magnification, and the types and numbers of cells and bacteria were recorded. A bacterial swab was collected and inoculated into culture media for the growth of aerobic bacteria. Before sampling, each atopic dog was evaluated for severity of cutaneous lesions, pruritus and conjunctival inflammation. Significant differences were observed between atopic and healthy dogs for the presence of bacteria on cytology (P = 0.015), keratinized (P = 0.001) and nonkeratinized epithelial cells (P = 0.013), eosinophils (P = 0.019) and lymphocytes (P = 0.008). Bacteria were recovered from 12 atopic dogs and three healthy dogs (P = 0.004). Staphylococcus pseudintermedius was the most commonly isolated species in atopic dogs (seven of 12). In atopic dogs, no significant relation was found between conjunctival bacterial colonization (on cytology and culture) and the severity of any of the clinical parameters. This study suggests differences in conjunctival bacterial colonization and cytological features between atopic and healthy dogs.  相似文献

Eighty-three canine cutaneous mast cell tumors were graded histologically and evaluated immunohistochemically for p53 tumor-suppressor protein expression. An avidin-biotin immunohistochemical protocol incorporated a rabbit polyclonal antibody (CM-1) directed against normal and mutant p53 protein. Positive staining was observed in 44.6% (37/83) of tumors and included 50% (12/24) of grade I (well differentiated) tumors, 46.9% (23/49) of grade II (intermediate differentiation) tumors, and 20% (2/10) of grade III (poorly differentiated) tumors. A statistically significantly higher proportion (P < 0.019) of tumors from the head and neck (83.3%, 10/12), stained positive for p53 than tumors from the thorax, back, abdomen, and axilla (39.4%, 13/33), legs (35.7%, 10/28), or prepuce, scrotal, or inguinal areas (44.4%, 4/9). No statistically significant difference between p53 labeling and histologic grade, breed, or tumor size was present. Survival data were available for 53/83 (63.9%) of dogs. Positive reactivity for p53 was observed in 47% (25/53) of tumors within this group, with 57.9% (11/19) of grade I, 43.3% (13/30) of grade II, and 25% (1/4) of grade III tumors labeled. Mean survival time for the 53 dogs was 12.1 months. The median survival time for dogs with grade III tumors or tumors >5 cm was statistically significantly shorter (P < 0.0001) than for dogs with grades I and II or smaller tumors. Although p53 protein abnormalities may play a role in tumor development or behavior in some canine cutaneous mast cell tumors, immunoreactivity was not associated with lack of tumor differentiation, tumor locations previously shown to demonstrate aggressive biological behavior, breed predisposition, or survival times.  相似文献

Forty-four nodular and noninvasive cutaneous fungal granulomas were identified in 34 horses over a 14.5-year period. Cutaneous fungal granulomas were most common in young horses (mean age 6.1 +/- 4.2 years; range 1-19 years). There was no apparent breed or sex bias. Granulomas were either single or multiple, and most often occurred in the skin of the head and neck. The characteristic histological finding was a nodular dermal mass with a mean diameter of 7.3 mm (range 2.5-20 mm) and an intact overlying epithelium. Lesions most often exhibited intense lymphocytic inflammation, with admixed pyogranulomatous inflammation associated with a small to moderate number of fungal elements. Causative fungi were both pigmented and nonpigmented organisms of variable morphology. Penetrating plant material was identified in three cases. Granulomas caused by nonpigmented fungi were most common in horses from wet regions. Both pigmented and nonpigmented fungi were found in granulomas from horses in dry regions. Cutaneous fungal granulomas occurred in February through November, with peaks in April and July. No correlation of yearly incidence with annual average temperature or rainfall was detected. This study confirms that equine cutaneous fungal granuloma is relatively common in horses in the Pacific Northwest. Morphology of causative fungi was variable, but the signalment, history, and clinical and overall histological features were very similar. Surgical excision was curative.  相似文献

Cutaneous neoplasia in 340 cats.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A total of 340 cases of cutaneous neoplasia were diagnosed in 340 of 3,564 cats that were examined by biopsy or necropsy during a 41-month period from January 1, 1986 through May 31, 1989. Eighteen types of tumor occurred, but four types comprised 77% of the cases. These were basal cell tumor, 89 cases (26%, mean age 10.3); mast cell tumor, 72 cases (21%, mean age 8.6); squamous cell carcinoma, 52 cases (15%, mean age 11.6); and fibrosarcoma, 50 cases (15%, mean age 10.2). For each of these four types of tumors, peak number of cases occurred in cats older than 10 years. Mast cell tumor was the only tumor diagnosed in cats younger than 1 year. The head was the most common site for basal cell tumors, mast cell tumors, and squamous cell carcinomas. The legs were the most common location of fibrosarcomas. Siamese cats had approximately three times as many mast cell tumors as statistically expected, but only one-fourth as many squamous cell carcinomas. Breed predilection for other skin tumors was not apparent. Sex predilection was not detected for any skin tumor.  相似文献

A retrospective histopathologic study was performed to evaluate the effect of primary intraocular melanocytic neoplasia on canine survival. Tumor size, location within the globe, extent of infiltration, and mitotic index were analyzed for their potential to predict survival. A total of 244 cases of dogs with melanocytic tumors submitted to the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin from 1988 to 1998 were evaluated. Histopathologic criteria (mitotic index, cytologic features of anaplasia) were used to differentiate 188 benign melanocytomas from 56 malignant melanomas. Signalment evaluation of age, sex, and breed revealed similarities in both tumor populations, with the majority of tumors discovered in 9-year-old, female/spayed, mixed-breed dogs. A greater percentage of left eyes (66%) vs. right eyes (47%) was found in the melanoma population, but an equal distribution was found in the melanocytoma population (48% and 52%, respectively). The majority of tumors arose from the anterior uveal tract (79% in the melanocytoma and 95% in the malignant melanoma populations). The German Shepherd breed was predisposed in the limbal distribution. At the time of enucleation, most tumors had invaded the sclera, but did not show extrascleral extension (51% in the melanocytoma and 61% in the malignant melanoma populations). Survival analysis showed a significant difference in survival between control and malignant melanoma populations ( P  = 0.0081) and was suggestive of a difference between the melanocytoma and melanoma populations ( P  = 0.031). Tumor extension, tumor size, and mitotic index were not found to be reliable predictors of survival.  相似文献
