Understanding the factors limiting copepod productivity in dense cultures is a prerequisite for the partial or entire replacement of Artemia and rotifers as live feed for finfish larvae. In dense cultures, high encounter rates between individuals may increase stress, cannibalism incidents and potentially trigger resting egg production. We conducted an experiment to evaluate the potential egg production and egg quality of Acartia tonsa stocked at densities ranging from 10 to >5000 ind. L?1. Egg Production (EP), Delayed Hatching Eggs production (DHE), hatching success (HS), egg mortality and water quality were used as end points. In the present system, A. tonsa was raised at >5000 ind. L?1 without affecting the mortality, confirming that attaining this high density in culture is possible. However, egg harvest reached an optimum of 12 000 egg L?1 day?1 at ~2500 ind. L?1 indicating that increasing stocking density above this level is not of practical interest. Calculations showed that the loss in egg harvest at stocking densities <2500 ind. L?1 is of 1.3% for every additional 100 adult copepods L?1. The increasing adult density did not affected the proportion of DHE produced (~10% of harvest) but decreased significantly the HS, though not to a point that would be problematic in a commercial production. Understanding the biology of copepods when stocked at high density is important to improve copepod culture systems and increase egg harvest yields. Technical solutions such as the continuous separation of eggs from adults in the water column, recirculation and the continuous provision of food are seen as potential solutions.  相似文献

Pigfish (Orthopristis chrysoptera Linnaeus) are a commonly used baitfish in the southeastern United States. Aquaculture methods for broodfish spawning and juvenile grow‐out have been developed but there is still a paucity of information regarding larval culture methods. Five, short duration (10 days) experiments were conducted to determine effective strategies to yield high larval survival and growth during early development. Experiment one examined the rotifer enrichments Ori‐Green, DHA Protein Selco, and AlgaMac 3050 as well as a non‐enriched control along with corresponding fatty acid levels in the enriched rotifers and pigfish larvae. Experiment two evaluated three, once daily feeding frequencies of either 5, 10 or 20 rotifers mL?1. Experiment three compared feeding 20 rotifers mL?1 once daily to feeding 5 rotifers mL?1 twice daily. Experiment four examined four different larval stocking densities: 50, 75, 100, or 125 larvae L?1. Experiment five examined green water strategies using either live Tahitian strain Isochrysis galbana (Parke) or Nannochloropsis oculata (Hibberd) paste at either 250 000 or 500 000 cells mL?1 as well as a clear water control. Results indicated rotifer enrichment with DHA Protein Selco and green water application using live T‐ISO at 500 000 cells mL?1 had the highest survival of pigfish during early stages of larval culture. A once daily rotifer feeding regime of 20 rotifers mL?1 and stocking density of 50 larvae L?1 also improved survival. These results provide producers with methods to improve efficiency for pigfish larval culture and provide researchers with new foundational data, such as potential fatty acid requirements.  相似文献

Egg disinfection is considered the most important routine work in hatcheries to avoid fungal and/or bacterial infection of fish eggs. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of three disinfectants: formalin, iodine and sodium chloride on the hatching success of yellow perch eggs. The disinfectants were tested in triplicate at different concentrations for 15 and 30 min bath treatments. Two experiments were conducted; formalin at five concentrations (25, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg L?1) and 25 mg L?1 iodine were tested in the first experiment. The second experiment involved formalin at three concentrations (250, 500 and 1000 mg L?1), iodine at three concentrations (50, 100 and 250 mg L?1) and sodium chloride at three concentrations (500, 1000 and 3000 mg L?1) were used. Iodine and sodium chloride‐treated eggs hatched earlier than formalin‐treated eggs. The highest mean percentage of eyed stage, hatching rate and survival to first feeding fry was observed at 200 mg L?1 formalin for 30 min, 50 mg L?1 iodine for 15 min and 500 mg L?1 sodium chloride for 30 min. High concentrations of formalin (1000 mg L?1), iodine (250 mg L?1) and sodium chloride (1000 and 3000 mg L?1) showed toxicity to yellow perch eggs, resulting in low hatching rate and survival to first feeding fry. We recommended formalin at a concentration of 150–200 mg L?1 for 30 min as an effective, easily available and low‐cost disinfectant for routine use to improve yellow perch hatchability.  相似文献

The effect of stocking density of the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa was evaluated in a 96 h rearing experiment. Possible density‐dependent egg production and egg viability were analysed at stocking densities of 100, 200, 300, 400 and 600 adults L−1. Temperature, oxygen saturation and algal concentration were kept optimal. A non‐density‐dependent mortality rate of 15–19% day−1 was documented. A non‐significant density‐dependent egg production was observed between 100 and 600 adults L−1. The average egg production was 22.5±8.8 egg female−1 day−1 in all densities. The average egg hatching success was 84.7±4.8% and was never observed below 76.1%, with no significant differences across the stocking densities. Conclusively, as a practical recommendation for the aquaculture industry, copepod cultures with densities ranging from 100 to 600 adults L−1 and presumably even more dense cultures are possible with the studied species obtaining a steady egg production and still high egg viability.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted on the effects of bronopol in the artificial incubation of crayfish eggs (Pacifastacus leniusculus) with the aim to search an alternative to formaldehyde. In the first experiment, 50, 250, 500 and 1000 ppm bronopol and 3000 ppm formaldehyde (control) in periodical administrations were tested on a density of 6.6 eggs cm?2. After 44 days of incubation, the highest survival was obtained with 1000 ppm bronopol (81.9% to stage 2 juvenile, with no significant difference from formaldehyde), whereas lower bronopol concentrations resulted in significantly lower survival. In the second experiment, 1000, 3000 and 5000 ppm bronopol and 3000 ppm formaldehyde (control) administered for 15 min every second day were tested on eggs at a density of 20 eggs cm?2. After 78 days of incubation, bronopol at 3000 ppm allowed for a stage 2 juvenile survival rate of 65.0% (with no significant difference from formaldehyde), whereas significantly lower survival was obtained with 1000 ppm or 5000 ppm. This study shows that bronopol may constitute an alternative to formaldehyde in the artificial incubation of crayfish eggs. A concentration of 3000 ppm administered for 15 min every second day may be adequate even on long incubations at high densities (at least 20 eggs cm?2, one complete layer).  相似文献

In this study, we analysed the effect of population density and food concentration on the fecundity of a Mediterranean strain of Acartia tonsa to maximize egg production. During 4‐day feeding experiments, egg hatching success and faecal pellet production were also followed. The algae Rhinomonas reticulata was supplied at different concentrations corresponding to 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 μg C L?1 day?1 at the following adult copepod density: 40, 80 and 160 ind. L?1. Our results show a positive relationship between algal concentration and egg production under all experimental conditions confirming that the quantity of food strongly limits A. tonsa fecundity. Maximum egg production (57 eggs per female) was reached at the lowest density and at the maximum food concentration. Percentage of egg hatching success was not dependent on the quantity of food used. At the same food concentration, an increase in population density from 40 to 80 ind. L?1 induced an increase in faecal pellet production per couple which did not correspond to an increase in egg production, suggesting that higher energetic costs were shifted to swimming activity. Productivity of the A. tonsa Mediterranean strain is mainly limited by the quantity of food rather than by crowding conditions.  相似文献

Variable quality and yield (percentage development from eggs) D-veligers of the scallop, Pecten fumatus Reeve, prompted assessment of fertilization and incubation protocols. Various sperm to egg ratios were tested on eggs suspended in sea water at different densities. Ratios of 1000:1 led to the highest D-veliger yield when eggs were incubated in suspension at one per millilitre. With increasing egg densities, the addition of 1000 sperm per egg led to increasing average numbers of sperm visible at the periphery of each egg, indicating that fewer sperm were necessary for fertilization at higher egg densities. The time period and temperature over which released gametes were stored before fertilization were also found to significantly affect D-veliger yield. Decreasing gamete storage temperature from 26 to 14oC increased D-veliger yield, as did a reduction in the gamete storage period from 6 to 1 h. The incubation of embryos at densities in the 5-50 ml-1 range did not affect D-veliger yield. A significant increase in total bacterial counts in the culture water occurred with increasing embryo stocking densities. However, presumptive Vibrionaceae counts did not increase significantly with increasing embryo stocking densities. In a comparison of the viability of self- and cross-fertilized embryos and larvae, fewer self-fertilized embryos developed to D-veliger stage; however, percentage survival, although highly variable, did not differ significantly in subsequent larval rearing. Cross-fertilized larvae had attained a significantly larger size by day 7.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of intensification on Macrobrachium rosenbergii hatchery in clear water recirculating system. Larvae were raised in 120‐L cylindrical tanks coupled with 30‐L biofilters. We performed two experiments in randomized blocks. In the first, we tested the stocking densities of 50, 70 and 90 newly hatched larvae L?1. Survival did not differ by anova (P = 0.343), but productivity increased with the intensification (P = 0.038). In the second experiment, we tested the stocking densities of 80, 100, 120 and 140 newly hatched larvae L?1. Survival decreased (P = 0.039) as density increased, but productivity did not differ (P = 0.317). The period of culture ranged from 22 to 23 days. The intensification did not influence water quality parameters or larval development. Survival decreased with the intensification and the space showed to be a limiting factor on tanks stocked with 90 larvae L?1 or more. Productivity curve shows an increase from 50 to 100 larvae L?1 and tended to reach plateau on stocking densities higher than 100 larvae L?1. In addition, the intensification improved the use of Artemia cysts by decreasing the superfluous feeding. Thus, we recommend stocking of 80 to 100 newly hatched larvae L?1 as the best option for M. rosenbergii hatchery in clear water recirculating system.  相似文献

Cultivated Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) entering their first year of gamete maturation were fed diets with different levels of arachidonic acid (ARA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) for 6.5 months prior to commencement of spawning. Gravid females were stripped three times: at the beginning, peak and end of spawning. Lipid composition and egg and larval quality of 34 family crosses were investigated. Results indicated that ARA uptake into eggs from broodstock diet was highly efficient achieving proportions of ARA up to 84% higher in eggs than in the diet. EPA was 42–76% higher, and DHA was 155–173% higher in eggs than in diets. Cod fed the diet with the lowest EPA/ARA ratio had the greatest egg production. Eggs from fish on a diet with high ARA level had significantly higher fertilization and hatching success than those fed low levels of ARA. This diet produced on average 71 viable eggs g?1 female compared with 32.5 and 4 eggs in diet B and C, respectively. Furthermore, larval survival until 8 days posthatch was higher in diets with lower ARA levels. The combined results showed that ARA dietary supplementation and low EPA/ARA ratio yielded a greater number of viable larvae kg?1 female.  相似文献

Manipulation of stocking densities (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 larvae L?1), each with or without the presence of shelter was conducted to determine the effects on survival, cannibalism and growth performances of larval bagrid catfish Mystus nemurus (Valenciennes 1840) from 2 to 14 days after hatching. This study revealed that stocking density significantly affected survival, cannibalism, total length, feed intake, specific growth rate and final weight of bagrid catfish larvae. Significantly higher survival was observed at moderate stocking density of more than 20 but less than 50 larvae L?1. Survival was significantly low beyond this threshold and was the lowest at 10 larvae L?1, coincides with the highest cannibalism. Total length, feed intake, specific growth rate and final weight were significantly higher at 10 larvae L?1. Shelter significantly improved total length and feed intake. No significant effects of stocking density and shelter were observed on the apparent feed conversion ratio and coefficient of variation. There was also no significant interaction between stocking density and shelter in all parameters. This study suggests that bagrid catfish larvae could be cultured at more than 20 but less than 50 larvae L?1 with the availability of shelter for optimal larviculture condition.  相似文献

Broodstock of Atlantic cod were fed with three diets; astaxanthin supplemented (100 ppm kg?1) hydrated diet (30% water) (HWHAs), no additional astaxanthin supplemented (50 ppm kg?1) hydrated diet (30% water) (HWLAs) and a control diet (50 ppm kg?1 astaxanthin and 10% water). Throughout the spawning period, eggs were collected daily and fertilization success and proportion of embryos with normal cleavage were recorded. Larvae were reared using standard culture methods. Larval growth was recorded every 10 days and larval survival was recorded at 50 days post hatch. In general, broodstock fed with diets containing higher water content (HWHAs and HWLAs) and higher astaxanthin (HWHAs) had higher egg production and efficiency of egg output, lower egg incubation mortality and higher larval growth and survival. Broodstock fed with higher water content diets consumed less feed compared to control group. Also, broodstock fed with HWHAs and HWLAs recovered faster in terms of body condition than the control group. The egg bound mortality of female fish was significantly higher in control broodstock compared to broodstock fed with HWHAs and HWLAs. Broodstock fed with higher astaxanthin (HWHAs) had significantly higher fertilization success than other two groups however; no differences were found in proportion embryos with normal cleavage among different groups. Larval survival was significantly higher in HWHAs broodstock compared to other two groups. Our results showed that increased water content and astaxanthin levels in the diet could improve the condition and fecundity of Atlantic cod broodstock.  相似文献

Garlic, Allium sativum L., extract administered as a therapeutic bath was shown to have antiparasitic properties towards Neobenedenia sp. (MacCallum) (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea) infecting farmed barramundi, Lates calcarifer (Bloch). The effect of garlic extract (active component allicin) immersion on Neobenedenia sp. egg development, hatching success, oncomiracidia (larvae) longevity, infection success and juvenile Neobenedenia survival was examined and compared with freshwater and formalin immersion. Garlic extract was found to significantly impede hatching success (5% ± 5%) and oncomiracidia longevity (<2 h) at allicin concentrations of 15.2 μL L?1, while eggs in the seawater control had >95% hatching success and mean oncomiracidia longevity of 37 ± 3 h. At much lower allicin concentrations (0.76 and 1.52 μL L?1), garlic extract also significantly reduced Neobenedenia infection success of L. calcarifer to 25% ± 4% and 11% ± 4%, respectively, compared with 55% ± 7% in the seawater control. Juvenile Neobenedenia attached to host fish proved to be highly resistant to allicin with 96% surviving 1‐h immersion in 10 mL L?1 (15.2 μL L?1 allicin) of garlic extract. Allicin‐containing garlic extracts show potential for development as a therapy to manage monogenean infections in intensive aquaculture with the greatest impact at the egg and larval stages.  相似文献

Physicochemical changes in the water were monitored at different hours of embryonic and larval development of Indian carp (Cirrhinus mrigala) eggs in a Chinese hatchery system with 75–85% hatching success. At a water temperature of 29.3°C, mass hatching of the embryos started at about 11–12 h after fertilization and was completed within 4 h. The amount of dissolved oxygen and chemical oxygen demand ranged between 4.8 and 9.63 mg l?1 and 16.5 and 185.0 mg l?1, respectively. A marked rise in the concentration of bicarbonate and total hardness of the water after egg transfer into hatching tanks was perhaps due to liberation of Ca2+ and Mg2+ from the egg mass. A sharp decline in phosphate content during hatching was associated with the building of bones, while the ammonia level was greatly increased due to a high rate of nitrogenous excretion during hatching.  相似文献

A captive population of California yellowtail (Seriola lalandi) was used to document spawning patterns, including measures of egg production, population fecundity and egg and larval quality from 2007 to 2010. Spawned eggs were also used to document larval development and to develop rearing techniques for aquaculture in the region. Broodstock growth and condition factor were best when feeding rations were maintained at 10–15% body weight week?1 during the warm summer months. A winter ration based on satiation feeding was typically 4% body weight week?1. During the 4‐year study period, the only broodstock health issue was an infestation by the parasitic gill fluke Zeuxapta seriolae, which was readily treated. Spawning occurred naturally in the 140 m3 tank when the ambient water temperature reached 16°C and ended when the temperature exceeded 22°C. Egg production reached a maximum in 2010 when 43 spawn events were recorded from a pool of nine females yielding 36.8 million eggs in total. The average female size at this time was 20 kg, which equated to a total annual population fecundity of approximately 226 000 eggs kg?1 female year?1. Larval rearing trials yielded survival rates as high as 5.8% from egg to 50 days post‐hatch (dph). Successful larval culture methods included the addition of algae paste for green water culture, rotifers (20 rotifers mL?1) at 2 dph and Artemia (5 Artemia mL?1) at 6 dph. Larvae were transferred from the incubation tank at 10 dph to a shallower tank with 33% greater surface area to accommodate the larvae's strong orientation to surface waters. This research represents the first documentation of successful spawning and larval rearing for S. lalandi in the eastern Pacific.  相似文献

To improve the efficiency of stocking lakes with vendace (Coregonus albula) larvae, a technique for delaying egg hatching was developed. This synchronizes mass hatching with the development of suitable thermal conditions and food availability in the lake.Water temperatures were measured in Polish hatcheries and a mathematical model of the dependence of C. albula embryogenesis on incubation temperature was utilized to predict the possibilities of delaying egg hatching. Vendace hatching can be delayed by cooling the circulation water (to 1 or 2°C) during March and April. At the beginning of May, when lake conditions are optimal for stocking, the incubation temperature should be raised (at a rate of 1.5°C h?1) to that of the water supply. This ensures mass hatching of strong, normally developed larvae within 2–3 days. This technique facilitates both the delay of vendace hatching at minimal cost and the production of larvae on demand for lake stocking.  相似文献

Elimination of egg stickiness is an important factor in artificial reproduction of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca L.). This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Alcalase enzyme to remove the adhesive layer of pikeperch eggs. The eggs were treated with Alcalase at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 5.0 mL L?1 or a milk/talc solution 2 min post insemination. Duration of exposure was 2 min in Alcalase and 60 min in milk/talc. The highest, albeit not significant, hatching rate (85.4%) was found with 1.5 mL L?1 of Alcalase, but hatching rates were similar in 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mL L?1. Hatching rates were significantly lower groups treated with 5.0 mL L?1 Alcalase enzyme (56.4%) compared to groups treated with milk powder and talc (61.3%). Nominally complete removal of adhesiveness was observed in 1.5 and 2 mL L?1. All Alcalase treatments led to significantly lower incubation duration compared with the traditional milk/talc treatment. The application of Alcalase successfully eliminated pikeperch egg stickiness in less time than with traditional milk/clay/talc methods.  相似文献

As marine finfish aquaculture expands, there is an increasing interest in the ability to ship early life stages from breeding centres to hatcheries so that each hatchery does not have to maintain its own broodstock. Here, we conducted 24 h air‐shipping simulations with yolk‐sac larvae of California yellowtail (CYT; Seriola lalandi) and white seabass (WSB; Atractoscion nobilis) to help fill in the informational gaps for shipping marine fish larvae. We examined the effects of a pH buffer on water quality, post‐shipping larval survival and subsequent survival to first feeding at larval densities of 1000, 3000, 6000 and 9000 larvae L?1. The pH buffer, 8.3 Trizma®, was tested at varying concentrations of zero (NT = 0.00 g L?1), low (LT = 0.75 g L?1), medium (MT = 1.5 g L?1) and high (HT = 3.0 g L?1). Trials were conducted using replicate 2 L aquarium bags filled with 500 mL of seawater and held in a water bath at 19–20°C. Results showed an interspecific difference in survival at the highest shipping densities under these experimental conditions. Shipping densities up to 6750 CYT larvae L?1 or 3000 WSB larvae L?1 consistently yielded >90% survival immediately after simulated shipment and >85% survival 48 h after the simulations. Furthermore, at these densities, pH was maintained at ~8.0 when buffered at 1.5 g L?1. The highest tested densities of 9580 CYT larvae L?1 and 9940 WSB larvae L?1, yielded lower survival 69–79% and 0.0–1.3% respectively after 24 h. Final pH in the high density CYT trials were unsatisfactory (below 7.0), regardless of the buffer concentration; however pH in the WSB high density trials improved with increasing buffer concentration. On the basis of the results from these air‐shipping simulations, we recommend CYT and WSB larvae be shipped in seawater with 1.5 g L?1 Trizma® at densities not greater than 6750 larvae L?1 for CYT and 3000 larvae L?1 for WSB. We believe this represents an important step in improving long distance transport protocols for these species and provides useful guidance in air transport of other economically and ecologically important marine species. Additional research is warranted to compare these simulation results with those from actual air shipments, as we did not account for factors that may vary in flight like temperature and pressure variations, and physical agitation.  相似文献

The present study evaluated various sodium and potassium concentrations in hatchery water to determine which proportions would be optimal for Macrobrachium rosenbergii larviculture. Using a closed RAS system (60‐L), experiments were conducted in two stages. In the first stage, larval quality parameters were compared among triplicate treatments of sodium (2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 mg L?1) and potassium (100, 150, 200 and 250 mg L?1). During the second stage, these same parameters were compared from interactions of the two best concentrations determined in the first stage. Initial larval density was fixed at 100 larvae L?1 and larval quality parameters such as larval stage index (LSI), larval condition index (LCI), larvae dry weight, survival (%), LC50‐24 h for formalin stress and time of the first postlarvae (PL) appearance were measured. Results showed that during the early larval period time LSI, LCI and survival parameters were affected only by potassium and the interaction with sodium was not significant. At a later period of the larval development, interactions between both sodium and potassium were measurable for LSI (< 0.05) while the interactions on LCI and survival were not significant. Measurable differences among the combined treatments 4000 mg L?1 sodium and 150 mg L?1 potassium resulted in the best performance for M. rosenbergii larviculture. This concentration also provided the highest final survival to PL metamorphosis (40.6 ± 2.5%) which was at least 10% higher than the other treatments.  相似文献

Initial larval stocking density, prey density, daily prey ration and light conditions (light intensity and photoperiod) were tested for common dentex larval rearing under experimental conditions. Experiments continued until the first peak of larval mortality. The best results in larval survival were obtained with an initial stocking density of between 10 and 40 larvae L?1, fed with at least 10 rotifers mL?1, maintaining ratios of 500–1000 rotifers larva?1, with one or two adjustments of prey density per day. The use of more than 2000 rotifers larva?1 or three daily adjustments of live prey density had negative effects on larval survival. The best light conditions for common dentex larval rearing were found using a photoperiod of 24 h L:0 h D and an intensity of at least 3.4 μmol m?2 s?1.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of four densities (940, 1880, 3760, 7520 eggs cm?2 and 0.5, 1, 2, 4 ind mL?1 of embryos and larvae, respectively) and four temperatures (8, 11, 14, 17°C) on early growth and survival of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. Prism‐stage length was significantly greater in embryos initially held at 940 and 1880 eggs cm?2 than in those held at 3760 and 7520 eggs cm?2. Larvae grew significantly faster and had significantly greater survival when reared at 0.5 or 1 ind mL?1 than when held at 2 or 4 ind mL?1. Embryos had greater survival at 11 and 14°C than at 8 and 17°C, whereas embryo length was significantly smaller at 8°C than at 11, 14 or 17°C. Larvae grew significantly slower at 8°C than at 11, 14 or 17°C, whereas survival was significantly reduced at 8 and 17°C compared with 11 and 14°C. Per cent survival from prism to metamorphic competency in the best treatments was 48.9 ± 2.2% and 50.0 ± 3.6% (mean ± SE) for the 1 ind mL?1 and 11°C treatments, respectively. On the basis of these results, for rearing of S. purpuratus under static conditions, we recommend that fertilized eggs and larvae be held at ≤1880 eggs cm?2 and ≤1 ind mL?1, respectively, and at 11–14°C.  相似文献
