Agricultural, environmental and ecological modeling requires soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) that is difficult to measure. Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) are thus routinely applied to predict CEC from easily measured physicochemical properties (e.g., texture, soil organic matter, pH). This study developed the support vector machines (SVM)‐based PTFs to predict soil CEC based on 208 soil samples collected from A and B horizons in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China. The database was randomly split into calibration and validation datasets in proportions of 3:1 using the bootstrap method. The optimal SVM parameters were searched by applying the genetic algorithm (GA). The performance of SVM models was compared to those of multiple stepwise regression (MSR) and artificial neural network (ANN) models. Results show that the accuracy of CEC predicted by SVM improves considerably over those predicted by MSR and ANN. The performance of SVM for B horizon (R2 = 0.85) is slightly better than that for A horizon (R2 = 0.81). The SVM is a powerful approach in the simulation of nonlinear relationship between CEC and physicochemical properties of widely distributed samples from different soil horizons. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted to explore the influence of each input parameter on the CEC predictions by SVM. The clay content is the most sensitive parameter, followed by soil organic matter and pH, while sand content has the weakest influence. This suggests that clay is the most important predictor for predicting CEC of both soil horizons.  相似文献

A Xeralf on feldspathic sandstone was sampled from a hillslope in the Mount Lofty Ranges in order to study its genesis and, in particular, the origin of the strong texture contrast. Micromorphological study demonstrated that the clay present in void argillans and papules in the B2 horizon accounted for only a small amount of the clay present. Elemental analysis of the whole soil (< 2 mm) and sand, silt and clay fractions showed that there had been considerable weathering of both quartz and microcline, which were the dominant minerals present. Kaolinite is the dominant clay mineral weathering product. Illite appears to be forming from vermiculite in the A horizon. Using zircon as an internal standard, it was shown that elemental losses of SiO2 and reductions in weight and volume were similar in A and B horizons. Losses of aluminium and potassium were greatest in the A horizon, least in the B3. There has been an absolute increase in the amount of iron. A possible source is iron from heavy mineral bands upslope. It was concluded from the similarity of the quartz particle-size distributions of the A2, B2 and B3 horizons that the intensity of weathering of quartz was the same in A and B horizons. In the case of feldspar (mostly microcline), there is a greater proportion of feldspar in the fine sand and silt fractions of the A2 horizon than in the B horizon. Weathering of feldspar is greatest in the A horizon. The texture profile is principally a function of greater lateral loss of clay from the A horizons compared to the B horizons.  相似文献

Fragipan is a widely distributed subsoil horizon that induces severe limitations to plant growth and land use, mainly because of its high bulk density. In this work, we evaluated the pore‐size distribution through the analysis of the cumulative curve of intruded mercury volume in some soils with fragipan horizons. This approach provides information also about the arrangement of particles, thus we compared the results obtained for fragipan and nonfragipan horizons to relate porosity and particle arrangement with the specific physical properties of fragipans. The total volume of intruded mercury did not allow to discriminate between fragipan and nonfragipan horizons. However, from the variation of the pore volume as a function of the radius, two modal classes of pores were found, coarse and fine, respectively. The fine‐pore class arose from the arrangement of clay particles, and its volume was correlated to clay contents (r = 0.787) and to clay packing density (r = –0.621). The clay fractions in fragipans were less densely packed than in the other B horizons, even if they had similar clay contents. The coarser‐pore modal class is known to arise from the interactions between clay, silt, and sand particles, and its volume was different among horizons. Fragipan had a low volume of this modal pore class. In addition, a packing density for the coarser phase of 0.74, corresponding to a rhombohedral packing, was found only in fragipans. Thus, the low permeability and high bulk density of fragipans are linked to specific arrangements of the particles: an open packing of the clay phase is associated to an extremely dense packing of silt and sand. This combination is not present in any other soil horizon.  相似文献

Purpose

Information about particle size distribution (PSD) and soil texture is essential for understanding soil drainage, porosity, nutrient availability, and trafficability. The sieve-pipette/gravimetric method traditionally used for particle size analysis is labour-intensive and resource-intensive. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry may provide a rapid alternative. The study’s aim was to examine the use of XRF for rapid determination of PSD in Irish soils.

Methods

Soils (n?=?355) from existing archives in Ireland were analysed with a benchtop energy-dispersive XRF (EDXRF). Correlation and regression analyses were determined to compare Rb, Fe, Al, and Si concentrations to % clay, % silt, and % sand. Also, linear regression models were developed to compare % clay, % sand, and % silt measured by the gravimetric method to values predicted by EDXRF.

Results

The relationship between element concentration and PSD was dependent on parent material. Rb, Al, and Fe showed a significant (p?<?0.05) correlation (r?>?0.50) with % clay and % sand in soils derived from limestone and siliceous stone parent materials. Rb was the best predictor for % clay (R2?=?0.49, RMSE?=?10.20) in soils derived from limestone and siliceous stone-derived soils.

Conclusion

Geochemistry and clay mineralogy of the soils’ parent material strongly influenced the EDXRF’s ability to predict particle size. The EDXRF could predict % clay in soils from parent materials which weather easily, but the opposite was true for soils with parent material recalcitrant to weathering. In conclusion, this study has shown that the EDXRF can screen % clay in soils derived from limestone and siliceous stone parent materials.

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometers can be used to determine the elemental composition easily, rapidly, and without using chemical reagents, which is very important for tropical regions due to the lack of detailed soil characterization data. Moreover, pXRF data can be used to predict the results of more expensive, time-consuming, and conventional laboratory analyses. This study sought to determine the elemental composition of various soil profiles using pXRF. Two operational modes (Trace Mode and General Mode) and two scanning time (30 and 60 s) were assessed to determine their effects on the correlation of pXRF dataset with respect to conventional inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-optical emission spectrometry analysis. This relationship has been reported in previous studies, however, few studies were performed on tropical soils, which are unique. Furthermore, such relationships establish the viability of developing prediction models directly from pXRF data. Linear regression was applied to develop calibration models for the prediction of ICP analysis results and exchangeable and available elemental contents based on pXRF data. High coefficients of determination (R2) were obtained for Ca (0.87), Cu (0.90), Fe (0.95), Mn (0.85), Cr (0.95), V (0.72), and Ni (0.90), with adequate validation. Statistically significant results were not found for Al, K, Zn, Ti, and Zr. The models predicting the exchangeable Ca based on the total Ca from pXRF reached an R2 of up to 0.85. Operational modes influenced the pXRF results. Our results illustrate that pXRF holds great promise for tropical soil characterization and the development of prediction models, justifying the need for larger-scale studies in tropical countries worldwide.  相似文献

The roles of fine-earth materials in the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of especially homogenous units of the kaolinitic and oxyhydroxidic tropical soils are still unclear. The CEC (pH 7) of some coarse-textured soils from southeastern Nigeria were related to their total sand, coarse sand (CS), fine sand (FS), silt, clay, and organic-matter (OM) contents before and after partitioning the dataset into topsoils and subsoils and into very-low-, low-, and moderate-/high-stability soils. The soil-layer categories showed similar CEC values; the stability categories did not. The CEC increased with decreasing CS but with increasing FS. Silt correlated negatively with the CEC, except in the moderate- to high-stability soils. Conversely, clay and OM generally impacted positively on the CEC. The best-fitting linear CEC function (R2, 68%) was attained with FS, clay, and OM with relative contributions of 26, 38, and 36%, respectively. However, more reliable models were attained after partitioning by soil layer (R2, 71–76%) and by soil stability (R2, 81–86%). Notably FS's contribution to CEC increased while clay's decreased with increasing soil stability. Clay alone satisfactorily modeled the CEC for the very-low-stability soils, whereas silt contributed more than OM to the CEC of the moderate- to high-stability soils. These results provide new evidence about the cation exchange behavior of FS, silt, and clay in structurally contrasting tropical soils.  相似文献

Soils of the Countesswells and Insch series incubated with 14C labelled glucose or plant materials have been separated into clay (< 2 μm), silt, (2–20 μm), fine sand (20–250 μm) and coarse sand (>250μm) fractions and the distribution of individual labelled and unlabelled sugars was determined in each fraction. Both soils contained about 10–15 per cent clay, 18–23 per cent silt and about 60 per cent fine and coarse sand. For all soil samples the concentrations of sugars were usually greatest in the clay, slightly less in the silt, with values in the sand fractions being five or ten times lower, except when fresh plant material was present. In 14C glucose amended Insch soil, 55 per cent of the radioactivity in sugars (predominantly hexoses) occurred in the clay, 36 per cent in the silt, 3 per cent in the fine sand and 6 per cent in the coarse sand after 28 days incubation. For the Countesswells soil the values were 55, 42, 2 and 1 per cent respectively. In 14C ryegrass amended soil before incubation. 77 per cent of the radioactivity in sugars (predominantly glucose, arabinose and xylose) was in the coarse sand. After one year's incubation this had fallen to 59 per cent. In soil amended with 14C cereal rye straw the distribution of radioactivity in sugars after four years incubation was: clay, 21 per cent; silt, 43 per cent; fine sand, 21 per cent; coarse sand, 4 per cent. These distributions were compared with that of the naturally occurring sugars: clay, 31–42 per cent; silt, 40–43 per cent; fine sand, 3–11 per cent; coarse sand, 12–20 per cent.  相似文献

Flocculation tests and permeability measurements were carried out for silt and clay fractions separated from surface and subsurface horizons of four paddy soils. There was not much difference in the flocculating power between A1(OH)2.2C10.8 and CaSO4. Their flocculation value, 0.3 to 3 mM, was attained by adding the reagents at the rate of 0.24 to 2.4 mmol/100 g of the silt and clay. The flocculation with A1(OH)2.2C10.8 or CaSO4 did not affect the sediment volume of the silt and clay. This sediment volume was smaller for the surface than for the subsurface horizons of each soil, suggesting that soil organic matter and repetition of wetting and drying contribute to the stable aggregation of the silt and clay in the surface horizon. The permeability was higher for the silt and clay fractions separated from the surface horizon than that from the subsurface horizon, and the addition of 2.5 to 4.2 mmol of A1(OH)2.2C10.8 or CaSO4/100g of the silt and clay increased its permeability by 1.5 to 4 times. The effect of A1(OH)2.2C10.8 was more lasting than that of CaSO4 and was recognized even after 200 ml of water passed through 1 g of the silt and clay. The effect of the flocculating reagent on the permeability was more or less enhanced by air-drying the treated silt and clay.  相似文献

Soils with and without organic manuring from 10 long-term manurial experiments in East Germany were fractionated into organo-mineral particle-size separates by ultrasonic disaggregation and sedimentation/decantation. The cation exchange capacities (CECs) buffered at pH 8.1 were determined for the size fractions fine+medium clay, coarse clay, fine, medium and coarse silt, sand, and for the total soil samples. In the samples from nine field experiments the CECs decreased with increased equivalent diameters (fine+medium clay: 489–8 13 mmolc kg?1, coarse clay: 367–749 mmolc kg?1, fine silt: 202–587 mmolc kg?1. medium silt: 63–345 mmolc kg?1, coarse silt: 12–128 mmolc kg?1 and sand: 10–156 mmolc kg?1. The CECs varied with genetic soil type, mineralogical composition of the <6.3-μm particles, and the C and N contents of the size fractions. In a pot experiment examining the role of various organic materials in the early stages of soil formation, the clay-size fractions had the largest CECs (85–392 mmolc kg?1), followed by the medium-silt (1 9-222 mmolc kg?1) and fine-silt fractions (23–192 mmolc kg?1). The effect of organic amendments on CEC was in general: compost>fresh farmyard manure = straw + mineral fertilizer = mineral fertilizer.  相似文献

Microbiological and biochemical investigations of chestnut soils and solonetzes were conducted in the dry steppe of the southern Privolzhskaya and northern Ergeni uplands. The living biomass of the microbial communities in the soils was estimated based on the content of phospholipids in the soils. Significant correlations were revealed between the contents of phospholipids and the main soil properties (the contents of humus, r = 0.66, P = 0.999; clay, r = −0.41, P = 0.95; physical clay, r = −0.57, P = 0.99; and pH, r = −0.59, P = 0.99). The content of phospholipids varied from 69 to 192 nmol/g of soil in the A1 horizons; with depth it decreased down to 36–135 in the B1 horizon and to 26–79 nmol/g of soil in the B2 horizon. The microbial biomass in the solonetzes was lower by 5 to 38% than that in the chestnut soils. A trend of the decreasing of the microbial biomass in the soils from the north to the south was revealed. Based on the content of phospholipids, the number of living microbial cells was assessed; the weighed averages of their number varied from 0.7–3.2 × 1010 to 7.5–13.6 × 1010.  相似文献

This study investigated the suitability of mid‐infrared diffuse reflectance Fourier transform (MIR‐DRIFT) spectroscopy, with partial least squares (PLS) regression, for the determination of variations in soil properties typical of Italian Mediterranean off‐shore environments. Pianosa, Elba and Sardinia are typical of islands from this environment, but developed on different geological substrates. Principal components analysis (PCA) showed that spectra could be grouped according to the soil composition of the islands. PLS full cross‐validation of soil property predictions was assessed by the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error of cross‐validation and prediction (RMSECV and RMSEP), the standard error (SECV for cross‐validation and SEP for prediction), and the residual predictive deviation (RPD). Although full cross‐validation appeared to be the most accurate (R2 = 0.95 for organic carbon (OC), 0.96 for inorganic carbon (IC), 0.87 for CEC, 0.72 for pH and 0.74 for clay; RPD = 4.4, 6.0, 2.7, 1.9 and 2.0, respectively), the prediction errors were considered to be optimistic and so alternative calibrations considered to be more similar to ‘true’ predictions were tested. Predictions using individual calibrations from each island were the least efficient, while predictions using calibration selection based on a Euclidian distance ranking method, using as few as 10 samples selected from each island, were almost as accurate as full cross‐validation for OC and IC (R2 = 0.93 for OC and 0.96 for IC; RPD = 3.9 and 4.7, respectively). Prediction accuracy for CEC, pH and clay was less accurate than expected, especially for clay (R2 = 0.73 for CEC, 0.50 for pH and 0.41 for clay; RPD = 1.8, 1.5 and 1.4, respectively). This study confirmed that the DRIFT PLS method was suitable for characterizing important properties for soils typical of islands in a Mediterranean environment and capable of discriminating between the variations in soil properties from different parent materials.  相似文献

Abstract

Twenty‐eight agriculturally important Delaware soils were cropped intensively in a greenhouse experiment. There was no consistent positive correlation between K uptake and percent sand, silt, clay, clay minerals of the clay fraction, K‐feld‐spars of the sand fraction or K‐feldspar weathering of the soils from the A horizon. Only potassium feldspar from the sand fraction and K‐feldspar weathering correlated with K uptake in the soils of the B horizon. This correlation was only significant at the latter part of the experiment when nonexchangeable K was probably the source of plant available K.  相似文献

Soils from A horizons of Eutrochrepts under spruce forest (Sf), mixed deciduous forest (Df), permanent grassland (Gp), and arable rotation (Ar) were fractionated into clay- (<2 μm), silt-(2–20 μm) and sand- (20–2000 μm) sized separates. 13C NMR spectroscopy was used to compare SOM composition across size separates and between land-use regimes. CPMAS 13C NMR spectroscopy showed that the intensity of signals assigned to carbohydrates (representing most O-alkyl C) and lignin (phenolic and methoxyl C) declined with decreasing particle size. Concurrently, alkyl C and C-substitution of aromatic C increased in the order sand, silt, clay. The amount of alkyl C correlated well with microbial resynthesis of carbohydrates. Solution 13C NMR spectra suggested that humic acids (HA) extracted from the size separates were richer in carboxyl C and aromatic C than the bulk size separates. Also HA reflected increasing percentage of alkyl C with decreasing particle size. O-alkyl C were lower in silt HA than in clay HA whereas aromatic C tended to peak in silt HA. These results suggested that sand-sized separates were enriched in plant residues (primary resources) whereas clay-sized separates were dominated by products of microbial resynthesis (secondary resources). Silt was rich in selectively preserved and microbially transformed primary resources. 13C NMR spectroscopy showed only small differences in SOM composition between land-use regimes, except that silt and silt HA from Ar were richer in aromatic C than those from the other plots. But enrichment factors (E= content in fraction/content in whole soil) revealed differences in the distribution of C species across the size separates. Relatively high Earomatic (0.9) and Eo-alkyl (1.0) for sand from Gp indicated high amounts of plant residues, probably due to intense rhizodeposition and to occlusion of plant debris within aggregates. Low Earomatic (0.3) and Eo-alkyl (0.3) for sand from Ar suggested depletion of primary resources, which could be attributed to disintegration of soil aggregates upon cultivation. A pronounced enrichment of alkyl C in Ar clay-sized separates (Ealkyl= 3.1) suggested large amounts of microbial carbon. Microbial products attached to clay surfaces by a variety of physico-chemical bondings appeared more stable against mineralization induced by cultivation than plant residues sequestered in aggregates.

Soil bulk density (BD) and effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) are among the most important soil properties required for crop growth and environmental management. This study aimed to explore the combination of soil and environmental data in developing pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for BD and ECEC. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and random forest model (RFM) were employed in developing PTFs using three different data sets: soil data (PTF‐1), environmental data (PTF‐2) and the combination of soil and environmental data (PTF‐3). In developing the PTFs, three depth increments were also considered: all depth, topsoil (<0.40 m) and subsoil (>0.40 m). Results showed that PTF‐3 (R2; 0.29–0.69) outperformed both PTF‐1 (R2; 0.11–0.18) and PTF‐2 (R2; 0.22–0.59) in BD estimation. However, for ECEC estimation, PTF‐3 (R2; 0.61–0.86) performed comparably as PTF‐1 (R2; 0.58–0.76) with both PTFs out‐performing PTF‐2 (R2; 0.30–0.71). Also, grouping of data into different soil depth increments improves the estimation of BD with PTFs (especially PTF‐2 and PTF‐3) performing better at subsoils than topsoils. Generally, the most important predictors of BD are sand, silt, elevation, rainfall, temperature for estimation at topsoil while EVI, elevation, temperature and clay are the most important BD predictors in the subsoil. Also, clay, sand, pH, rainfall and SOC are the most important predictors of ECEC in the topsoil while pH, sand, clay, temperature and rainfall are the most important predictors of ECEC in the subsoil. Findings are important for overcoming the challenges of building national soil databases for large‐scale modelling in most data‐sparse countries, especially in the sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA).  相似文献

Soil water retention curves are needed to describe the availability of soil water to plants and to model movement of water through unsaturated soils. Measuring these characteristics is time-consuming, labour-intensive and therefore expensive. This study was conducted to develop and evaluate functions based on neural networks to predict soil water retention characteristics. Dutch and Scottish data sets were available; they contained data on 178 and 165 soil horizons, respectively. A series of three neural networks (A, B and C) was developed. Neural network A had the following input variables: topsoil, bulk density, organic matter, clay, silt and sand content. In addition neural network B had matric potential as input, and network C included soil structural data expressed as the upper and lower boundary of the ped-size class. Neural network A had three output variables: the volumetric water content at matric potentials of 0, –100 and –15 000 hPa. Both models B and C had volumetric water content, at the matric potential given as input, as output variable. The networks were tested against independent data that were extracted from the original sets of soil profiles. Accuracy of the predictions was quantified by the root of the mean squared difference (RMSE) between the measured and the predicted water contents, and the coefficient of determination (R2). For network A the RMSE varied for the three estimated water contents from 0.0264 to 0.0476 cm3 cm–3, and R2 varied from 0.80 to 0.93 for the individual model outputs. Networks B and C had an RMSE of 0.0435 and 0.0426 cm3 cm–3, respectively. For both networks, R2 was 0.89. The neural networks performed somewhat better than previous regression functions, but the improvements were not significant.  相似文献

Soil from Eutrochrept A horizons under long-term spruce forest (Sf), mixed deciduous forest (Df), permanent grassland (Gp) and arable rotation (Ar) was fractionated according to particle size and analysed for contents of C, N, lignin-derived phenols and carbohydrates. Whole soil from Sf, Df, Gp and Ar contained 84, 59, 73 and 25 g C kg?1 soil, respectively. For all sites, the C content declined and C/N ratio increased in the order: clay (<2 μm), silt (2–20 μm), sand (20–2000 μm). Clay and silt were significantly lower in C in Ar than in Sf, Df and Gp, C associated with sand being substantially lower under arable rotation. The yield of lignin-derived phenols decreased and carboxyl functionality and methoxyl demethylation of lignin derivatives increased with decreasing particle size, indicating a progressive lignin alteration. Whole soil from Sf and Gp was substantially higher in vanillyl (V), syringyl (S) and cinnamyl (C) units (VSC) than soil from Df and Ar. Compared to whole soil, clay was depleted and sand enriched in VSC. Only sand appeared to be affected significantly by land use. Sand from Ar and Df was more enriched in VSC than sand from Gp and Sf. Whole soil carbohydrates decreased in the order: Gp>Ar>Df>Sf. Sand- and clay-sized separates were enriched in carbohydrates compared to silt. Carbohydrates in sand were mainly of plant origin whereas microbially-derived sugars accounted for a larger proportion in the clay. Compared to Sf, Df and Gp, clay from Ar was enriched and sand depleted in microbial sugars. Lignin and carbohydrate distribution patterns indicate that organic matter was in a more advanced stage of decomposition in the sand separates from forest than from agricultural A horizons. The forest soils also show a higher degree of oxidative changes in lignin associated with clay. In contrast, differences between silt from the four A horizons were small.  相似文献
