Abstract. The normally free-living amoeba Paramoeba sp. is associated with epithelial hyperplasia on the gills of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Tasmania. Gill-attached paramoebae were significantly larger than cultured ones. Unlike cultured paramoebae, gill-attached ones had small electron-dense, cytoplasmic deposits and small surface projections at the host-parasite interface. Examination of sequential samples of Tasmanian salmon gills from spring to summer indicated that pathological changes in the gill filaments were associated only with the presence of Paramoeba ; the parasite was also associated with necrosis of surface epithelial cells, and cytoplasmic processes passed into and between surface cells of hyperplastic gill epithelium. The evidence points to the paramoebae as primary opportunistic pathogens causing mechanical and possibly chemical damage. Based on size and ultrastructure, the Paramoeba sp. most closely resembles P. pemaquidensis Page.  相似文献

A new species of nematode parasite, Philometroides tahieli sp. nov. is described. The juvenile whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri Desmarest, was collected during the spring and summer of the years 2008–2010 from estuarial environments of Argentina. During investigations of the parasite fauna a nematode encapsulated in the musculature of the operculum was found. The nematodes were removed from the host's muscle tissue and slide‐mounted in lactophenol solution to clarify the specimens. Opercular muscle with the parasite was processed for histopathological examination. Philometroides tahieli sp. nov. can be identified by the location of gravid females in the host, presence of anterior oesophageal bulb, bosses on the surface of the body, presence of transversal mounds and 14 cephalic papillae in two circular rows. The pathogenicity of the parasite is low in the natural environment, but lesions are consistent with a chronic process. The appearance of caseous necrosis suggests the presence of a locally acting substance. Philometroides tahieli sp. nov. is the second species of this genera described from brackish waters, and since the discovery of Philometroides maplestoni in 1928, is the first species of this genus recorded for South America.  相似文献

Abstract. A microsporidian parasite was found in the gills of the brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), which was similar to Loma morhua Morrison and Sprague, a microsporidian parasite in the gills of cod. It was described and designated as Loma sp. Plistophora (=Pleistophora) salmonae Putz, Hoffman and Dunbar in gills of rainbow and steelhead trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, was also observed and was transferred to the genus Loma. All microsporidia known in gills of Gadidae and Salmonidae were judged to belong to the genus Loma but the data were not sufficient to provide a basis for a definitive separation of species. Provisionally, Loma morhua, L. branchialis, L. salmonae and Loma sp. were recognized.  相似文献

Abstract. During the laboratory culture of the California mud-fiat oetopus. Octopus bimaculoides (Pickford & McConnaughey, 1949), concurrent infestations of ectoparasitic flagellate and ciliate protozoans were discovered when examining sick and dying animals. The flagellates, similar to the bodonid parasite, Ichthyobodo necator (Henneguy, 1883), were small (3–9 μm total length) and infested any surface epithelia exposed to sea water. The larger ciliates (l5–30 μm total length), believed to be ancistrocomids, were found only on the gills. This is the first documented report of ciliate or flagellate ecto-parasites infesting cephalopod molluscs. Flagellate infestations were first manifest on the dorsal arms and mantle surfaces of O. bimaculoides as white spots visible when the octopuses were in dark colouration. Lesions formed at the centres of the spots and the interspersed lesions eventually connected. Once the parasites damaged the epidermis, secondary bacterial infections caused lesioning. Both parasites heavily infested the gills. Clinical signs first appeared at 2 months post-hatching (0-5 g). Octopuses seemed to become refractory to the disease beyond a size of 25 g. No effective treatment was found for these infestations. It was possible to eliminate parasite spread in the laboratory by prefiltering water to l μm. The source of the parasites was the wild octopus population of the southern California coast.  相似文献

Although the gills have been reported as a site for settlement by sea lice attached stages in experimental challenges, the prevalence and abundance of infection on gills have not been reported in farmed fish and have been reported only rarely in wild salmonids. Disproportionate attachment to the gills may be significant in evaluation of new therapeutants and this study asks whether the efficacy data from studies of therapeutants based on experimental challenge can be extrapolated to the fish farm arena. The distribution of chalimus on gills, body and fins of farmed first sea year Atlantic salmon were examined in two Scottish sea lochs, each on two occasions (30 fish on each sampling date), fish from one farm with infection with Lepeophtheirus salmonis only and the other farm with exclusively Caligus elongatus. The dorsal fin was the primary attachment site of L. salmonis (50% and 33% in two samples respectively) with 29% and 32% on other fins and 20% and 29% on the body and head. Only one of 56 chalimus (1.8%) and four of 75 chalimus (5.3%) were attached to the gills. In contrast, the chalimus distribution of C. elongatus was predominantly on fins other than the dorsal, including the tail, 74% and 71%, on two sampling occasions, respectively, with only 4.2% and 3.6% of chalimus located on the dorsal fin. The pectoral fins were the most common location with 32%, followed by the tail 23%, pelvic fins 14% and only 3% on the anal fin. None of 287 and 111 chalimus in two samples, respectively, of C. elongatus was attached to the gills. The low abundance of lice on the gills indicated that non‐destructive sampling methods adequately represented lice infection. In three experimental challenges with L. salmonis, the gills were a major attachment location with 19.9–36.3% of chalimus, 9.9–26.9% on the body, 22–27% on the dorsal fin and 19–23% on the other fins. These differences with natural challenge in L. salmonis reported here and also in the literature suggest that the importance of the gills for chalimus location in the experimental model is atypical and an artefact of reduced host swimming speed in tanks that permits copepodids to attach to the gills. In natural infection, the flow over the gills is high and reduced flow is required for copepodid settlement. Greatest reductions (96%) in chalimus bath treated with cypermethrin occurred on the gills with no significant reductions in those located on the dorsal and other fins. It is possible that the efficacy of therapeutants may be higher in chalimus attached to the gills because of the higher concentration encountered of bath therapeutant and extrapolation of efficacy to farms may be misleading and progression to field testing is essential.  相似文献

Abstract The peritrichous ciliate 'Epistylis sp.' involved in the'red-sore' disease of various North American freshwater fishes is identified as Heteropolaria colisarum Foissner & Schubert, 1977. Its morphology is redescribed from observations of living and silver-stained organisms and biometrically analysed individuals. Extended zooids can be easily identified by their highly characteristic (elongated) body. Silver impregnations show a very high number of silverlines and a band-like, irregularly formed macronucleus. The genus Heteropolaria belongs to the family Epistylididae and is characterized by the eccentric location of the scopula of the swarmer and a peculiar myoneme in the peristomal disc that branches off the myoneme of the peristomal collar. Autochthonous occurrences of this species are known only from North America. In Europe only the related species H. lwoffi has been found. Histological sections give some evidence that the terminal platelet of the stalk is embedded in the dermal epithelium. This suggests that H. colisarum could be a parasite rather than an epizoon and that the often associated bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila is a secondary invader. However, further studies are necessary. Experiments showed a high infectivity of the ciliate and no host specificity. These characteristics are supported by the observations of other researchers. Preliminary laboratory tests showed that a single treatment with salt solution (NaCl) at a rate of 1.5% for 3h controlled H. colisarum.  相似文献

The cockle Cerastoderma edule fishery has traditionally been the most important shellfish species in terms of biomass in Galicia (NW Spain). In the course of a survey of the histopathological conditions affecting this species in the Ria of Arousa, a haplosporidan parasite that had not been observed in Galicia was detected in one of the most productive cockle beds of Galicia. Uni‐ and binucleate cells and multinucleate plasmodia were observed in the connective tissue mainly in the digestive area, gills and gonad. The parasite showed low prevalence, and it was not associated with abnormal cockle mortality. Molecular identification showed that this parasite was closely related to the haplosporidan Minchinia mercenariae that had been reported infecting hard clams Mercenaria mercenaria from the Atlantic coast of the United States. The molecular characterization of its SSU rDNA region allowed obtaining a fragment of 1,796 bp showing 98% homology with M. mercenariae parasite. Phylogenetic analysis supported this identification as this parasite was clustered in the same clade as M. mercenariae from the United States and other M. mercenariae‐like sequences from the UK, with bootstrap value of 99%. The occurrence of M. mercenariae‐like parasites infecting molluscs outside the United States is confirmed.  相似文献

Abstract. An outbreak of Dermocystidium infection in cultured eels, Anguilla anguilla L., from Scotland is described. The disease appeared in the winter months but did not cause significant mortalities or adversely affect the growth of the eels. Infected eels had large, elongate white cysts on the gills. The cysts consisted of a homogeneous layer of parasite origin surrounded by a fibrous capsule and hyper-plastic epithelium. Within the cysts were small spherical parasite cells with a densely staining central area and peripheral granular, vacuolated cytoplasm. The cell wall appeared to be broken down in many cases and the cells appeared degenerate. The cysts eventually collapsed and the cavity was filled with epidermal tissue.  相似文献

2015年12月,采用形态学方法对长江中游的太白湖鱼类鳃和肠道寄生蠕虫进行了初步调查和种类鉴定。结果显示:在调查的15种131尾鱼中,共分离鉴定了36种寄生蠕虫,其中单殖吸虫30种,复殖吸虫1种,绦虫5种;对其中6种单殖吸虫的形态特征进行了重新描述。大部分鱼类的鳃部都感染单殖吸虫,只有4种鱼类的肠道感染寄生蠕虫,较低的体内寄生蠕虫多样性表明该湖泊的生态环境可能受到较严重的干扰。  相似文献

The study of the discharge of metallic pollutants into the marine environment through biological material such as sardines makes it possible to evaluate the quality of the biological resources and of the marine environment. The sardine (Sardina pilchardus) is the most popular species for fishing and the most consumed species by the Algiers population. Two toxic metals that can affect human health are studied in this fish. A year of sampling with fishermen was conducted. Sampling was done in the spring, in the autumn, and in April between April 2014 and April 2015. Sampled sardines were grouped by size classes. The gills and muscle were recovered by size classes. The results were explored using a principal components analysis and compared by a Mann-Whitney distribution test. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used in the laboratory for analysis. The most important results show that lead levels were higher than those of cadmium in the gills and muscle. For sardines, lead contamination appears to have both gill and food origins. Mann-Whitney comparison tests confirmed this homogeneous distribution of lead between the gills and muscle. The correlation between cadmium in the gills and height or weight is more substantial than that with muscle. The origin of cadmium in sardines is branchial. The food origin appears secondary. From our point of view, the effect of season, i.e., winter (December) and spring (April), favors an increase in metal levels in parallel to the production reserves planned for spawning. The effect of season was observed by use of a biplot. A significant reduction in cadmium and lead content was observed in September. The high temperature, an environmental factor, induced stress that reduced the metal concentrations and the decontamination induced by the issuance of genital products in early summer.  相似文献

In 2003, the Alaska walleye pollock industry reported product quality issues attributed to an unspecified parasite in fish muscle. Using molecular and histological methods, we identified the parasite in Bering Sea pollock as Ichthyophonus. Infected pollock were identified throughout the study area, and prevalence was greater in adults than in juveniles. This study not only provides the first documented report of Ichthyophonus in any fish species captured in the Bering Sea, but also reveals that the parasite has been present in this region for nearly 20 years and is not a recent introduction. Sequence analysis of 18S rDNA from Ichthyophonus in pollock revealed that consensus sequences were identical to published parasite sequences from Pacific herring and Yukon River Chinook salmon. Results from this study suggest potential for Ichthyophonus exposures from infected pollock via two trophic pathways; feeding on whole fish as prey and scavenging on industry‐discharged offal. Considering the notable Ichthyophonus levels in pollock, the low host specificity of the parasite and the role of this host as a central prey item in the Bering Sea, pollock likely serve as a key Ichthyophonus reservoir for other susceptible hosts in the North Pacific.  相似文献

Cryptocaryon irritans Brown 1951, a holotrichous ciliate parasite of marine fishes, causes marine white spot disease. In aquaria, C. irritans can cause acute damage and heavy mortalities to marine teleosts. Although first described 60 years ago, only within the last decade has detailed information emerged concerning its life cycle, transmission and pathogenesis. 为探究额尔齐斯河水域中鱼类寄生三代虫的种类以及感染情况,给新疆水产业的发展及我国三代虫的研究提供基础资料,2009年8月至2014年8月选取额尔齐斯河的北屯镇、185团场、布尔津和哈巴河4个采样点,自捕或者从当地渔民处购买材料鱼,通过染色观察三代虫的形态特征,对其几丁质结构进行绘图、测量及比较,同时对不同种类三代虫的感染率、感染强度、感染丰度以及宿主专一性进行分析。结果表明,4个采样点共发现三代虫14种,其中丁 三代虫(Gyrodactylus tinca Malmberg,1957)、白斑狗鱼三代虫(Gyrodoctylus lucii Kulakowskaja,1951)、梭鲈三代虫(Gyrodoctylu luciopercae Gusev,1962)、马氏三代虫(Gyrodactylus markakulensis Gvosdev,1950)均是国内首次发现,为新纪录种;感染率最高的为鲤(Cyprinus carpio)(23.94%),最低的为河鲈(Perca fluviatilis)(0.74%),除东方欧鳊(Abramis brama orientalis)、散鳞镜鲤(Cyprinus carpio haematopterrus)和鲤外,其余的感染率均不超过10%;银鲫(Carassius auratus gibelio)、散鳞镜鲤和鲤为易感宿主,方均比(S2/X)都大于1,呈聚集分布;其余的小于1,呈均匀分布。三代虫宿主专一性较强,但有少数种类三代虫寄生2~4种宿主的情况,也存在同一宿主感染2~3种三代虫的现象,与单殖吸虫的宿主专一性基本一致。  相似文献

Amoebic gill disease (AGD) in farmed Atlantic salmon is caused by the amoeba Paramoeba perurans. The recent establishment of in vitro culture techniques for P. perurans has provided a valuable tool for studying the parasite in detail. In this study, flow cytometry was used to generate clonal cultures from single‐sorted amoeba, and these were used to successfully establish AGD in experimental Atlantic salmon. The clonal cultures displayed differences in virulence, based on gill scores. The P. perurans load on gills, determined by qPCR analysis, showed a positive relationship with gill score, and with clonal virulence, indicating that the ability of amoebae to proliferate and/or remain attached on gills may play a role in virulence. Gill scores based on gross signs and histopathological analysis were in agreement. No association between level of gill score and specific gill arch was observed. It was found that for fish with lower gill scores based on histopathological examination, gross examination and qPCR analysis of gills from the same fish were less successful in detecting lesions and amoebae, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract Ichthyobodo necator (costia) is a common and important flagellate parasite that infests the skin and gills of many freshwater and marine fish. Costia infestations are often fatal and cause significant aquaculture losses worldwide. Recently it has been demonstrated that Ichthyobodo is a multispecies complex with differing host preferences. Knowing if those species have broad or narrow host specificity has important implications for the management of costia. To address the question of host specificity, genomic DNA was isolated from Ichthyobodo trophonts collected from rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, koi, Cyprinus carpio, mirror carp, C. carpio, goldfish, Carassius auratus, channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, swordtail, Xiphophorus helleri, and Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. The small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene from each isolate was analysed with previously published Ichthyobodo sequences using Bayesian phylogenetic methods. The internal transcribed spacers (ITS) from six isolates were also PCR-amplified, cloned and sequenced. Both the SSU rRNA phylogenetic analysis and the ITS rRNA sequence data support grouping the 22 Ichthyobodo isolates examined into a complex of nine different species. Many of these species were frequently isolated from multiple hosts, indicating that exchange of infested fish from one region to another has a high potential for spreading the disease. In one instance, the same species was obtained from marine and freshwater fish, further suggesting that certain Ichthyobodo species may not be limited by salinity.  相似文献

Abstract. The tilapine fish species belonging to the genus Oreochromis brood developing eggs and early fry in their buccal cavities. Though it is obvious that mouth brooding facilitates a physical protection from environmental hazards by keeping fry in this confined environment, it is still not clear whether mouth brooding provides any other type of protection to the early fry against pathogens. Investigations were made to study the possibility of protection of early fry of O. mossambicus against infections of the ciliate parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis during mouth brooding. Adult females were effectively immunized against I. multifiliis. Brooding immune females were then challenged with controlled infections of I. multifiliis tomites and the survival of the fry compared to those of challenged non-immune brooding females. The study demonstrated that there was some protection from the infection conferred to fry during mouthbrooding.  相似文献

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich) is a ciliate parasite that infects many species of freshwater fishes worldwide and causes heavy economic losses in aquaculture. Currently, parasiticides for controlling this parasite are limited, and few pond‐practical chemical therapies exist. Hence, the search for new parasiticides is urgently needed. One challenge confronting the screening of potential parasiticides is the difficulty in raising enough parasite for efficacy testing as Ich is an obligate parasite. This study used species of Tetrahymena, Ich‐related and cultivable ciliate protozoa, to evaluate two in vitro methods to test parasiticides. Plate counting and MTS assays (CellTiter 96® AQueous Non‐Radioactive Cell Proliferation Assay) were used to compare lethal concentrations or median lethal concentrations (LC50) of copper sulphate, formalin and malachite green between T. thermophila and Ich theronts or between T. thermophila and Ich tomonts. The parasiticides that killed Tthermophila have been demonstrated to kill theronts or tomonts. These in vitro methods using T. thermophila can be used to screen novel parasiticides against Ich.  相似文献

The chondracanthid copepod, Chondracanthus goldsmidi is an ectoparasite of gills, inner opercula and nasal cavities of cultured striped trumpeter, Latris lineata (Forster). Whilst often present in high numbers (up to 60 parasites per host), little is known about its effect on striped trumpeter. In this study C. goldsmidi was associated with extensive epithelial hyperplasia and necrosis. Pathological changes were most pronounced near the parasite’s attachment site, with papilloma‐like growths surrounding the entire parasite resulting in deformation of the filament. The number of mucous cells increased near the parasite attachment sites on both the opercula and gills. Mast cells were absent in healthy gills; in contrast numerous mast cells were identified in the papilloma‐like growths. Immunostaining identified piscidin‐positive mast cells in the papilloma‐like growths, presenting the first evidence of piscidin in the family Latridae.  相似文献
