Effects of different rearing temperatures (16, 21 and 26°C) on growth, metabolic performance and thermal tolerance of juvenile sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (initial body weight 7.72 ± 0.96 g, mean ±SD) were investigated in this study. During the 40‐day experiment, growth, metabolic performance, food intake and energy budget at different reared temperatures were determined. Sea cucumbers rearing at 16°C obtained better growth (final body weight 11.96 ± 0.35 g) than those reared at 21 (10.33 ± 0.41 g) and 26°C (8.31 ± 0.19 g) (< 0.05), and more energy was allocated for growth at 16°C (162.73 ±11.85 J g?1 d?1) than those at 21(79.61 ± 6.76 J g?1 d?1) and 26°C (27.07 ± 4.30 J g?1 d?1) (< 0.05). Critical thermal maxima (CTmax) values of juvenile sea cucumbers reared at 16, 21 and 26°C were 33.1, 34.1 and 36.6°C, respectively, and the upregulation of hsps in sea cucumbers reared at 26°C was higher than those acclimated at lower temperatures (16 and 21°C), indicating that temperature acclimation could change the thermal tolerance of the sea cucumber, and CTmax and hsps were sensitive indicators of the sea cucumber's thermal tolerance.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of different environmental temperatures in the physiology of Lutjanus guttatus juveniles by analysing their thermoregulatory behaviour, thermal tolerance, oxygen consumption rates and thermal metabolic scope. Jointly, the effect of acclimation and critical temperatures on heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) and lactate dehydrogenase (Ldh‐a) gene expressions were also analysed using acclimation temperatures of 20, 23, 26, 29 and 32°C. The results showed that the final preferred temperature in juvenile snapper was 26°C with a thermal window of 336.5°C2, which was related to an optimal temperature for their physiology determined by the routine metabolic rate and thermal metabolic scope. At temperatures from 20 to 26°C, the routine metabolic rate and Hsp70 and Ldh‐a genes had the lowest values related to a basal expression level. At acclimation temperatures from 29 to 32°C and after critical thermal maximum (CTmax) limit, the relative expression of Hsp70 and Ldh‐a genes increased significantly, but the main response at CTmax was the upregulation of Hsp70 gene.  相似文献

Modeling the relationships between environmental factors and the distribution at sea of species of conservation interest can be useful in predicting their occurrence from a local to a regional scale. This information is essential for planning management and conservation initiatives. In this study, generalized additive models (GAMs) were applied to investigate the influence of environmental, temporal and spatial variables on the catch rates of the twaite shad Alosa fallax (Lacepède) by the pelagic trawl fishery in the north‐central Adriatic Sea. Presence/absence and abundance [catch per unit effort (CPUE)] data between 2006 and 2012 were separately modeled, and the two models were then validated using a test data set. The most important factor influencing the presence and abundance of adult twaite shads was the spatial predictor (latitude × longitude). Two areas of major shads aggregations were observed, the most important of which being located near the estuaries of three main river systems of northern Italy. The twaite shad presence was also significantly affected by season, the largest and lowest occurrences being observed in autumn and spring, respectively. Among the environmental variables tested, only sea surface temperature was included in both models. Alosa fallax showed a wide thermal tolerance (6–27°C) with preference for temperature around 23°C. The model developed from the abundance data showed a moderate predictive power, whereas the accuracy of the presence/absence model was rather low. Some conclusions on the ecological requirements of A. fallax at sea arising from this study are useful to orient future monitoring and research programs and to develop effective conservation actions.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on the survival and behaviour of two size classes of Chlamys islandica was investigated in a laboratory study. The scallops were sampled in spring from three localities in Iceland, Breidafjördur (west), Húnaflói (north), and Hvalfjördur (southwest) and again in August from Breidafjördur and Hvalfjördur. Daily observations of mortality and behaviour were made over a 21‐day period at sea temperatures ranging from 7 to 16°C in spring (April–May) and 11 to 14°C in August. During the spring experiment the tolerance of scallops, as expressed by mortality and behaviour, was distinctly reduced at sea temperatures above 12°C among scallops from Breidafjördur and Húnaflói and above 13°C among scallops from Hvalfjördur. During the second set of experiments, conducted in August, scallops were transported into the laboratory from a higher sea temperature than in the spring. As a result, mortality rates were much lower demonstrated by the fact that only scallops reared at sea temperature of 14°C died. This indicates that C. islandica may tolerate somewhat higher temperatures than have been observed in Icelandic waters in recent years. However, the gradual increase in temperature during the last 10 years has brought the mean temperature close to the species' tolerance limit.  相似文献

Using Hsp70 as a biomarker, thermal stress impinges on reproductive organs, ovary and hepatopancreas were being analyzed by determining the expression of Hsp70 mRNA inside the organs after the adult inter‐molt females were subjected to thermal treatment at 35, 30 and 28°C (Control). Results showed the expression of Hsp70 mRNA under thermal treatment of 35°C after 2 hr recovery in ovary were upregulated at 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 hr and 30 days compared to control whereas in hepatopancreas under similar treatment, the expression of Hsp70 mRNA were significantly higher than control at 6, 24 hr and 30 days. Frequency of reproductive molt at 35°C showed the ovary of females were failed to develop and only entered common molt along three consecutive molt cycles. For 30°C thermal treatment, the expression of Hsp70 mRNA was significantly higher than control after 2 hr recovery but returned to normal afterwards until 30 days’ thermal treatment. Maternal heat shock for 2 hr at 35°C were found to give significantly lower frequency of reproductive molt and longer duration of ovarian development and incubation period whereas maternal heat shock for 2 hr at 30°C gave lower frequency of reproductive molt, slower development of embryo and lower hatching success compared to untreated control. This study suggests that short and long‐term thermal stress at 30 and 35°C were found to affect the induction of Hsp70 mRNA in reproductive organs of Macrobrachium rosenbergii and also influence their reproductive performance.  相似文献

Teleost fish have developed their own specific adaptive mechanism, both behavioral and physiological, to maintain homeostasis in response to unfavorable temperatures. Therefore, this study was aimed at assessing the critical thermal maxima (CTMax), critical thermal minima (CTMin), and oxygen consumption rate of Anabas testudineus (17.03 ± 1.2 g) after acclimating to three preset temperatures (25, 30, and 35°C) for 30 days. The CTMax and CTMin were 40.15, 41.40, 41.88°C and 12.43, 13.06, 13.94°C, respectively, and were significantly different (P < 0.05). The thermal tolerance polygon for the specified temperatures was 278.30°C2. The oxygen consumption rate (117.03, 125.70, 198.48 mg O2 kg−1 h−1, respectively) increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing acclimation temperatures. The overall results indicate that the thermal tolerance and oxygen consumption of A. testudineus are dependent on acclimation.  相似文献

The effects of thermal amplitudes of diel fluctuating temperature on growth and oxygen consumption of the juvenile sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (Selenka) were studied at the average temperatures of 15 and 18°C with three diel different fluctuating amplitudes of ±2, ±4 and ±6°C. The optimum thermal amplitudes for growth of the juvenile sea cucumber at the sizes of this experiment, at average temperatures of 15 and 18°C, were estimated to be ±1.38 and ±1.67°C respectively. In the constant temperature regimes, the growth rate at 15°C was higher than that at 18°C. However, the growth rate at 18±2°C was higher than that at 15±2°C. The results from this study suggested that fluctuating temperatures enhanced the optimum temperature for the growth of sea cucumbers compared with that at constant temperatures. Therefore, accurate predictions of the optimum temperature of sea cucumbers in the natural environment, in which water temperatures fluctuate daily and seasonally, should be made from data obtained at fluctuating temperatures.  相似文献

California halibut, Paralichthys californicus (Ayres, 1859) juveniles were studied to ascertain the thermal tolerance and the compatibility zone where these species can be cultivated. Juvenile halibut acclimated at 15, 18, 21 and 24 °C preferred temperatures of 15.1, 18.2, 18.5 and 24.7 °C respectively. The final preferendum (FP) was 18.4 °C, equivalent to the temperature where the physiological processes are more efficient and the optimum growth temperature of 18.02 °C was calculated using the Jobling (1981) equation. The maximum average weekly temperature that must not be exceeded in a juvenile cultivation system is 22.6 °C. Juveniles avoided temperatures of 10.8 and 29.1 °C if they were acclimated between 15 and 24 °C. The thermal tolerance range of the juvenile halibut, having low and high lethal temperatures of 5.0 and 31 °C, characterizes it as a eurythermic organism. The tolerance of the halibut did not increase with the acclimation temperature corresponding to the ultimate upper incipient lethal temperature of 31 °C that differed by only 0.83 °C to the value calculated using the Jobling (1981) equation. The thermal tolerance and compatibility zone for the California halibut were 242.8 and 121.5 (°C)2, respectively; they characterize the thermal niche that includes the FP supporting an optimal growth of juveniles.  相似文献

The thermoregulatory behaviour of green abalone Haliotis fulgens and pink abalone H. corrugata was investigated. Haliotis fulgens juveniles ranging in wet weight from 3.0 to 3.3 g and from 28.7 to 30.5 mm shell length and of H. corrugata 2.0 g and 25.7 mm in shell length were exposed to 19°C for 30 days in a flow‐through water system. Temperature preference was determined in a horizontal thermal gradient and was found to be 25.4°C for green abalone and 25.0°C for pink abalone. Displacement velocity was 4.3 cm h−1 for H. fulgens and 12.8 cm h−1 for H. corrugata. The optimum temperature for growth calculated for both abalone species was 24.6 and 24.5°C respectively. The critical thermal maxima (CTMax) of H. fulgens and H. corrugata were determined as a measure of thermal tolerance. Abalones were subjected to increasing water temperatures at a rate of 1°C on 30 min until they detached from the substrate. The CTMax at 50% were 33.6 and 32.0°C for green and pink abalone respectively. The results are discussed in relation to site selection and commercial rearing.  相似文献

Episodes of summer mortality of the Kumamoto oyster Crassostrea sikamea are a major problem for its cultivation. Expression of the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) is induced by various environmental stresses, including heat. We cloned and sequenced hsp70 complementary DNA from C. sikamea to investigate the relationship between hsp70 expression and heat tolerance in this oyster. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed using gill tissue dissected from oysters before and after heat shock for 1 h. The results showed hsp70 expression was faster and greater in oysters cultured at 20–22 °C than at 10–12 °C, and survival was lower among oysters cultured at 20–22 °C than at 10–12 °C. Moreover, heat tolerance was investigated by a 1-h pre-heat treatment, followed by exposure to heat shock conditions 5 days later. Survival was higher and hsp70 expression was notably lower in oysters that received the pre-heat treatment compared with those that did not. We conclude that a pre-heat treatment of only 1 h may be useful for inducing heat tolerance in C. sikamea, and that a low level of hsp70 expression after heat shock is an important index in selecting for high heat tolerance in these oysters.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on growth and survival of juvenile blackfoot abalone, Haliotis iris, were investigated. Animals of 10, 30 or 60 mm initial shell length were exposed to ambient (6–10°C), 14, 18, 22 and 26°C for 112 days in a flow‐through culture system. Maximum growth occurred at 22°C for the 10 and 30 mm size classes and at 18°C for the 60 mm size class. Regression analysis identified the optimal temperature for growth (ToptG) at around 21°C for the 10 and 30 mm size classes and at 17–18°C for the largest size class. In a second experiment, the critical thermal maximum of H. iris was determined as a measure of thermal tolerance. Abalone were subjected to increasing water temperatures at a rate of 2°C h?1 until they detached from the substrate. Abalone of 10 mm displayed greater thermal tolerance than abalone of 30 and 60 mm in length. CT50 temperatures were 28.8, 27.7 and 27.8°C, yielding deduced ToptG values of 19.7, 18.3 and 18.4°C for the 10, 30 and 60 mm size classes respectively. The size‐dependent nature of the relationship between growth and temperature could be capitalized upon in recirculating aquaculture systems.  相似文献

Critical thermal maxima (CTMax) and minima (CTMin) were determined for Prochilodus scrofa Steindachner of two sizes (19.5 ±7.2 g and 249 ± 42.4 g). acclimated at 15. 20, 25, 30 and 35 ± 1°C. The CTMax and the CTMin for the smaller fish were 33.9. 36.7. 38.7, 40.3. 42.0°C and 5.0, 7.2. 9.2. 10.3. 13.4oC and for the larger (Ish 33.3, 35.7, 38.2. 40.6. 42.6°C and 6.5, 8.2. 10.8. 12.4, 14.6°C. respectively, at each acclimation temperature. The CTMin from smaller fish were significantly lower than those from larger ones but the CTMax did not show any such difference. These results indicate that P. scrofa is suitable for culture in south-eastern and even in southern Brazil where winter temperatures may drop to very low levels, mainly at night. The zone of thermal tolerance calculated by CTMax and CTMin was equivalent to 1046°C2 and 964.2°C2, respectively, for smaller and larger fish, showing a high degree of eurythermicity.  相似文献

The edible oyster Crassostrea gryphoides was induced to spawn in the laboratory by thermal stimulation, and the larvae were reared to spat. The larvae grow through the straight hinge (70×60.5 μm), early umbo (96.25×87.5 μm), late umbo (215×152.5 μm), eyed stage (290×222.5 μm) and pediveliger (308.25×254.17 μm) in pelagic phase before metamorphosing to spat, and these stages are described. These stages were reached at 20 h, on the fifth, 11th, 15th, 19th and 21st day respectively. Spat settlement percentage was found to be 1.8%.  相似文献

Sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.), juveniles (1.32 g) grew at a rate of 4.2% per day, when fish were fed ad libitum and reared at optimal thermal conditions (ambient sea water temperature, 20-26°C). At 13°C, feeding and spontaneous activity were severely restricted and somatic growth was reduced to 0.6% per day. Over a period of 6 weeks, both muscle fibre hyperplasia and nuclear division were higher in the ambient-temperature group compared with the fish reared at 13°C. Despite the differences in growth rate and spontaneous activity, muscle fibre hyperplasia was paralleled by nuclear division in the lateral axial muscle in both temperature groups and the number of nuclei per myofibre did not differ significantly between the two temperature groups. It is concluded that at optimal thermal and feeding conditions, somatic growth of sea bass juveniles is mediated through an increase in the number of nuclei and muscle fibres.  相似文献

The preferred temperature (PT) of Poecilia sphenops (Pisces, Poeciliidae) (n = 240; 1.13 ± 0.06 g wet weight; 3.26 ± 0.88 cm standard length) from Presa Piedra Azul, Oaxaca, Mexico, was measured at acclimation temperature of 20 °C, 23 °C, 26 °C, 29 °C, 32 °C and 35 °C. The thermal preference of males was 25.5 °C in summer and 29.6 °C in winter; whereas females preferred 29 °C in both seasons. Fish held at 20 °C and 23 °C preferred temperatures 36% higher than their acclimation temperature (AT), and those held at 35 °C and 32 °C preferred 30% and 20% lower temperatures than their AT. In intermediate temperatures, no significant differences between PT and AT were found. The interval of thermal selection based on the higher (HAT) and lower (LAT) avoidance temperatures was of 10–14 °C and not different between sexes in both seasons. Knowledge of the thermal biology of P. sphenops based on the preferred and avoidance temperatures was very important in order to understand the capacity of the species to adapt to the thermal changes occurring in its habitat. Based on the results, we can recommend the use of P. sphenops in aquaculture owing to its thermal plasticity.  相似文献

Corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops, is one of the main species used as cleaner fish to combat sea lice infestation in salmon aquaculture; however, there is little knowledge about its biology. Here, we describe the embryonic development of this species and examine the viability of the eggs under three temperature regimes. The experiments were conducted at three water temperature regimes, 12, 15, and 18°C, which resemble common sea water temperatures registered during the spawning season of corkwing wrasse at different latitudes along the Norwegian coast. Corkwing wrasse spawn small spherical eggs of 0.75–0.80 mm in diameter (mean 0.78, CV = 3.6%) with several oil droplets and go through eight developmental stages until hatching. The shortest hatching time was registered after 144 hr at 18°C and after 222 and 372 hr at 15 and 12°C, respectively. These observations provide important baseline biological information to advance the establishment of commercial rearing techniques and sustainable fishing management practices for this heavily exploited species.  相似文献

The critical thermal maximum of juvenile spotted seatrout (SL range 18–33 mm) was determined using a temperature increase of +0.26°C per hour. The critical thermal maximum (water temperature that was lethal to 50% of the test fish [LT50]) for trial 1 was LT50 = 38.8°C, LT50 = 39.4°C for trial 2, and LT50 = 38.9°C for trial 3. Critical thermal maximums differed significantly (P < 0.05) between trials 2 and 3, whereas trial 1 did not differ among trials. This difference correlated with body size, where fish in trial 2 were significantly larger (P < 0.05) (mean = 27.6 ± 2.0 mm in SL) (mean ± SE) than the fish of trials 1 (mean = 23.1 ± 0.5 mm in SL) and 3 (mean = 21.5 ± 0.7 mm in SL), suggesting positive size dependence in the critical thermal maximum.  相似文献

In this study, the energy budget of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, was evaluated after one-week acclimation periods at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25°C. Small clams (151 ± 12 mg DW) and large clams (353 ± 16 mg DW) were fed with the microalgae, Isochrysis galbana. Filtration rate, ingestion rate, assimilation efficiency, oxygen-consumption rate, and ammonia excretion rate were measured. Both filtration rate and ingestion rate of small and large clams were found to be related to temperature. The highest Q 10 values were measured in the range 15–20°C for both small and large clams. Assimilation efficiency of both small and large clams was not significantly influenced by temperature, although the maximum mean values were detected at 20°C. Oxygen consumption rate and ammonia excretion rate of small and large clams were found to be related directly to temperature over the entire range, with a maximum being detected at 25°C. The highest Q 10 value was estimated in the range 10–15°C with regard to oxygen consumption rate, and in the range of 15–20°C with regard to ammonia excretion rate. Scope for growth (SFG) was positive at all temperatures, achieving a maximum value at 20°C in both small and large clams, primarily as a consequence of the enhanced ingestion rate which offset the concomitant elevation in the metabolic rate. The present paper describes the growth properties of juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) reared at 7, 10, 13 and 16 °C, and a group reared under “temperature steps” i.e. with temperature reduced successively from 16 to 13 and 10 °C. Growth rate and feed conversion efficiency of juvenile Atlantic cod were significantly influenced by the interaction of temperature and fish size. Overall growth was highest in the 13 °C and the T-step groups but for different reasons, as the fish at 13 °C had 10% higher overall feeding intake compared to the T-step group, whereas the T-step had 8% higher feeding efficiency. After termination of the laboratory study the fish were reared in sea pens at ambient conditions for 17 months. The groups performed differently when reared at ambient conditions in the sea as the T-step group was 11.6, 11.5, 5.3 and 7.5% larger than 7, 10, 13 and 16 °C, respectively in June 2005. Optimal temperature for growth and feed conversion efficiency decreased with size, indicating an ontogenetic reduction in optimum temperature for growth with increasing size. The results suggest an optimum temperature for growth of juvenile Atlantic cod in the size range 5–50 g dropping from 14.7 °C for 5–10 g juvenile to 12.4 °C for 40–50 g juvenile. Moreover, a broader parabolic regression curve between growth, feed conversion efficiency and temperature as size increases, indicate increased temperature tolerance with size. The study confirms that juvenile cod exhibits ontogenetic variation in temperature optimum, which might partly explain different spatial distribution of juvenile and adult cod in ocean waters. Our study also indicates a physiological mechanism that might be linked to cod migrations as cod may maximize their feeding efficiency by active thermoregulation.  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was run for 171 days to assess growth and survivorship of recently settled juveniles of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller), reared at five temperatures: 4.7±0.8, 9.0±1.1, 12.9±1.1, 16.0±1.5 and 19.7±1.3°C (mean±SD, n=7942). Individual sea urchins were housed separately in PVC pots with Nitex mesh bottoms (10 per tank and five replicate tanks per temperature treatment) and fed a combination of benthic diatoms and macroalgae (Porphyra sp.). The test diameter of each urchin was measured and survivorship recorded on a monthly basis. Mean (±SE) test diameter of all individuals at the beginning of the experiment was 2.41±0.03 mm (n=250). At the end of the experiment, mean test diameter (±SE) was significantly larger at 9.0°C (8.46±0.06 mm) and 12.9°C (8.20±0.25 mm) than at 4.7°C (7.27±0.05 mm), 16.0°C (6.72±0.17 mm) and 19.7°C (2.65±0.24 mm) and significantly larger at 4.7 and 16.0°C than at 19.7°C. When growth was expressed as a per cent increase in test diameter from the start of the experiment, however, there were no significant pair‐wise differences among 4.7, 9.0, 12.9 and 16.0°C treatments at the end of the experiment, but all these treatments were significantly greater than at 19.7°C. Mean per cent survivorship (±SE) at the end of the experiment for the various temperature treatments was 76.0±6.0%, 90.0±5.5%, 100.0±0.0%, 98.0±2.0% and 26.0±11.2% at 4.7, 9.0, 12.9, 16.0 and 19.7°C respectively. Per cent survivorship was significantly greater at 4.7, 9.0, 12.9 and 16.0°C than at 19.7°C and significantly greater at 12.9 and 16.0°C than at 4.7°C. Mean area increase of urchins per replicate tank at the end of the experiment – taking into account both test diameter growth and survivorship – was significantly larger at 9.0 and 12.9°C than at 4.7, 16.0 and 19.7°C, and significantly larger at 4.7 and 16.0°C than at 19.7°C. The results of this study suggest that young juveniles of S. droebachiensis should be reared at 9–13°C in order to optimize production for aquaculture.  相似文献
