Urbanization can affect the density of hosts, altering patterns of infection risk in wildlife. Most studies examining associations between urbanization and host-parasite interactions have focused on vertebrate wildlife that carry zoonotic pathogens, and less is known about responses of other host taxa, including insects.
Objectives
Here we ask whether urban development predicts infection by a protozoan, Ophyrocystis elektroscirrha, in three populations of monarchs (Danaus plexippus): migratory monarchs in northeastern U.S., non-migratory monarchs in southeastern coastal U.S., and non-migratory monarchs in Hawaii.
Methods
We used impervious surface and developed land cover classes from the National Land Cover Database to derive proportional measures of urban development and an index of land cover aggregation at two spatial scales. Parasite data were from previous field sampling (Hawaii) and a citizen science project focused on monarch infection in North America.
Results
Proportional measures of urban development predicted greater infection prevalence for non-migratory monarchs sampled in the southern coastal U.S. and Hawaii, but not in the northern U.S. Aggregations of low intensity development, dominated by single-family housing, predicted greater infection prevalence in monarchs from the northern and southern coastal U.S. populations, but predicted lower infection prevalence in Hawaii.
Conclusions
Because natural habitats have been reduced by land-use change, plantings for monarchs in residential areas and urban gardens has become popular among the public. Mechanisms that underlie higher infection prevalence in urban landscapes remain unknown. Further monitoring and experimental studies are needed to inform strategies for habitat management to lower infection risk for monarchs.

Neospora caninum was isolated in Vero cell culture from the brain of a stillborn calf. This isolate (designated NC-LivB1) is the first to be obtained from cattle in the United Kingdom and was confirmed as N. caninum by immunofluorescence with specific antibodies and by internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequence analysis. The purposes of this study were to evaluate families of Boxers with ventricular arrhythmias to determine whether this disorder is a familial trait and, if so, to determine the mode of inheritance. Eighty-two Boxers were evaluated by physical examination, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, and 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiogram. Dogs were considered affected if at least 50 premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) were observed during a 24-hour period. All dogs were at least 6 years of age at evaluation. Complete cardiovascular examinations were performed on dogs from 6 extended families. The 2 most complete pedigrees were used to determine the pattern of inheritance. The number of PVCs observed during a 24-hour period in affected dogs ranged from 112 to 4,894 (mean +/- SD, median; 1,309 +/- 2,609, 1,017). The number of PVCs observed during a 24-hour period in the unaffected dogs ranged from 0 to 16 (7 +/- 10, 12). Pedigree evaluation was performed to determine pattern of inheritance. An autosomal dominant pattern was determined to be most likely because a sex predisposition was not observed, affected individuals were observed in every generation, and 2 affected individuals produced unaffected offspring. To evaluate canine lymphocyte stimulation the radioactive thymidine incorporation assay is still the method of choice. In order to find a suitable non-radioactive alternative to the standard 3H-thymidine incorporation assay, proliferation of canine peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) was measured with three different colorimetric assays, using the two tetrazolium salts MTT and XTT and 5-bromo-deoxyuridine (BrdU). Isolated canine PBL were stimulated with two different mitogens, Concanavalin A (Con A) and Phytohemagglutinin (PHA), using different culture conditions. Applying statistical analysis we found that BrdU and MTT showed a high correlation to the 3H-thymidine incorporation assay, although the BrdU assay proved to be more sensitive than the MTT assay. No significant correlation between the XTT assay and the radioactive method was demonstrated. Consequently, the BrdU assay is the most suitable alternative to the radioactive method. 相似文献
Phonocardiography was evaluated as a noninvasive technique for diagnosis of cardiovascular adaptation and disease in broiler chickens. Heart sounds (HSs) were compared in a fast-growing (FG) commercial broiler line that is highly susceptible to chronic right heart failure resulting from pulmonary hypertension syndrome (PHS) and in a non-selected slow-growing (SG) broiler line that is resistant to PHS. HSs were analyzed in broilers reared in hypobaric hypoxia (HYP) and normobaric (CON) conditions. PHS was induced by a combination of embryonic hypoxia and HYP exposure. HSs were recorded with a microphone placed at the thoracic inlet of each chicken. Electrocardiograms were used to mark the sampling interval for the first, second, and total HS. Digitized HS signals were analyzed for peak frequency, mean peak frequency, and band width. Birds were examined for PHS lesions when 6 wk of age, at the end of each experiment. HSs were compared by line and treatment (Experiment 1) or by treatment and week (Experiment 2). In addition, HS frequencies were analyzed within the HYP treatment group for differences between birds with severe or no gross PHS lesions. HS frequencies generally decreased with age and were also lower in the FG than the SG line. Hypobaric exposure decreased all HS frequencies in the SG line and components of the first HSs in the FG line. The SG line did not develop gross lesions of PHS. In the FG line, significant differences in HS frequencies were observed between HYP and CON groups but not between PHS- and PHS+ broilers. Frequency changes described in humans with PHS were not observed. Further development to maximize the resolution of the HS waveforms and improved matching of the sampling interval to the electrical or hemodynamic output of the chicken heart may allow its use as a diagnostic tool for differentiating broilers with normal cardiac function or physiologic adaptation from those with cardiovascular disease. 相似文献
This paper examines various factors which contribute to performance of water user associations. The capability of collective organizations such as WUAs to develop appropriate rules and to enforce them while keeping the level of conflict low is considered to be the core of organizational performance. We focus on the processes in collective organizations with greater attention to costs of working together. Four factors representing benefits and costs, the rights held by the WUAs, magnitude of expected benefits, external assistance received and leadership explain most of the differences in performance. The prospect of benefits is a necessary condition for individuals to act collectively. But it is not sufficient. Expected organizational costs need to be low. The prospect of costs being low or being absorbed by one or more individuals – either external agents or internal leaders – provides an encouraging environment. Effective internal leadership appears to be essential as it can lead to greater congruence in interests and greater possibility of mutual assurances which are critical for collective action. 相似文献
