Extranodal γδ-T-cell lymphoma in a dog with leishmaniasis

Abstract: An 8-year-old intact male mongrel dog with alopecia and weight loss was referred to the Veterinary Faculty of Naples. The dog had pale mucous membranes, enlarged prescapular lymph nodes, and splenomegaly. Laboratory abnormalities included anemia, thrombocytopenia, and hyperglobulinemia. Bone marrow aspirate smears contained numerous Leishmania amastigotes and an immunofluorescent antibody titer was strongly positive (1:1280) for leishmaniasis. The dog was treated with a combination of meglumine antimoniate and allopurinol for 60 days and showed clinical improvement. Two months after the end of treatment the dog was again referred because of relapse of leishmaniasis and the presence of a firm subcutaneous mass on the medial right thigh. Based on cytologic examination of fine needle aspirates of the mass, a diagnosis of large-cell lymphoma was made. Flow cytometry of tumor cells revealed γδ-T-cell lymphoma with a CD5+, CD3+, TCRγδ+, CD4−, CD8−, CD45RA+ immunophenotype. Using nested PCR, amastigotes were not detected in the neoplastic tissue. An association between leishmaniasis and hematopoietic tumors has been described rarely. γδ-T cells may be involved in the host response to this parasite, and prolonged antigenic stimulation and chronic immunosuppression (typical of leishmaniasis) play a crucial role in the etiopathogenesis of T-cell lymphoma.  相似文献

A 13 year comparative study was carried out on the behaviour of four European and two Japanese plum varieties grown in adjacent rows in an area of northern Italy where plum leptonecrosis is epidemic. Within seven years, 100% of the Japanese plum trees became symptomatically infected. Nine years after planting, five trees of each of the European cvs, which were asymptomatic, were top-grafted with healthy buds of the cv Ozark Premier, which is an indicator for plum leptonecrosis. Based on the results of PCR analysis, DAPI staining and on the reaction of the top-grafted Ozark Premier indicators, 50% of the European plum trees, despite their healthy appearance, were shown to be infected with plum leptonecrosis. The detectable presence and graft transmissibility of the plum leptonecrosis phytoplasma in the asymptomatic European plum trees means that the European plum trees are not resistant to the infection but that they are tolerant. The active presence of a still unknown vector/s in the investigated area is stressed as well as the important role of Prunus domestica L. played in the conservation and spread of plum leptonecrosis.  相似文献

The fine structure of the male reproductive system of Allacma fusca (L.) is described. The system consists of testes, deferent ducts, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory duct and accessory glands. The nature of each part is established. Secretions from the seminal vesicles are stored in the lumen of these organs, then flow into the ejaculatory duct and are used to produce spermatophores. The epithelium of this tract has secretory activity and osmoregulatory function. Secretions and spermatozoa are stored into two distinct parts of the ejaculatory duct, divided by a transverse cuticular septum.  相似文献   

Mucor Species in Orchard Soil – Population Dynamics and Pathogenicity on Pear Fruit

Strains of Mucor piriformis were isolated from orchard soils and from packinghouse dump-tank waters. Pathogen propagules were not found in fruit sample washings. M. piriformis was the most prevalent of the Mucor isolates, only one of 67 isolates was a different Mucor sp., possibly M. racemosus. The population of the pathogen propagules fluctuated in an annual cyclic pattern, declining in warm months and increasing after harvest. The viability of sporangiospores was markedly affected by rain. There was a good correlation (r=0.88) between the number of recovered propagules in the soil and the amount of rainfall. M. piriformis isolates caused decay on pear at 0°C after 14 days.  相似文献

A total of 1,936 pigs were transported through 8 trips (8.4 ± 0.5 hr) from 2 grow-to-finish farms to a commercial slaughter plant, all located in Southern Brazil. On each trip, a sub-sample of each load (36 barrows/load, weighing 118.9 ± 9.8 kg) was randomly allocated into one of the following loading densities during transport: 200 kg/m² (D200), 235 kg/m² (D235), and 270 kg/m² (D270). Behavioral recordings of postures and activities were made during transportation and lairage using video-cameras. At slaughter, blood samples were collected to assess the concentrations of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate. Carcass weights and skin lesion scores were assessed on-line, and meat quality was evaluated in the longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle by assessing pH, color, and drip loss. During transportation, the proportion of animals lying down was higher (P < 0.05) in D200 and D235 groups compared with D270. The proportion of sitting animals during transportation was higher (P < 0.01) in D270 compared with D200. In lairage, D200 and D235 pigs stood more compared with D270 (P = 0.01), while the proportion of lying pigs was higher (P = 0.02) for D270 pigs compared with D200 and D235. The frequency of drinking bouts in lairage was higher (P < 0.05) for D200 group compared with D235 and D270. The levels of CK were lower (P < 0.05) in D200 pigs transported compared with D270. Lesion scores tended to be higher (P = 0.06) in D270 carcasses compared with D200 and D235. A tendency for lower (P = 0.10) pH1 values in the LT muscle of D270 pigs compared with D200 pigs was also found. Based on the results of this study, the application of lower loading densities (≤235 kg/m²) in the truck allows pigs to have sufficient space to rest, travel more comfortably and arrive less fatigued at the slaughter plant.  相似文献   

Effect of composting and number of flocks on poultry litter extract bod and toxicity

Changes in poultry litter's (aqueous extract) biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and toxicity, to photobacterium phosphoreum, calculated as EC₅₀ values, with the time of composting and the number of flocks raised, before cleaning the house, were studied. The BOD of the extract (5 g L^?1) is comparable to that of raw sewage and it increased with the time of composting, following a first order kinetics. The extract showed a toxicity higher than the toxicity of a solution of 25 ppm phenol. Increasing the number of flocks raised (from 2 to 15), before cleaning the house, reduced both the litter's BOD (22%) and toxicity (66%).  相似文献

Two vinification methods involving different degrees of antioxidant protection of Falanghina must during prefermentative steps, and referred as HAMP (high antioxidant must protection) and LAMP (low antioxidant must protection), were compared in terms of fermentation performances of four different yeast strains, composition of the volatile fraction of wines at the end of alcoholic fermentation, and shelf life of wines during storage. The use of HAMP technology resulted in wines with lower volatile acidity and higher concentrations of medium-chain fatty acid ethyl esters, acetates, and volatile fatty acids. For two of the four strains a lower concentration of isoamyl alcohol was also observed. HAMP wines also revealed increased shelf life because of the higher concentration of odor active esters at the end of storage and better preservation of varietal aromas.  相似文献   

Molecular and physiological characterisation of psychrotrophic hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria isolated from Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica)

A set of 21 Antarctic marine bacteria isolated from the Ross Sea and able to utilise diesel fuel as the sole carbon and energy source was characterised. Isolates were analysed by amplified 16S rDNA restriction analysis using the enzyme AluI, resulting in two different groups corresponding to different bacterial species. These species were assigned to the genera Rhodococcus and Alcaligenes, on the basis of 16S rDNA sequencing. This low degree of inter-specific biodiversity was parallel to a low intra-specific biodiversity, as shown by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA analysis. Then, a 550-bp DNA fragment coding for the inner region of alkane mono-oxygenase was PCR-amplified from the genome of each strain. The phylogenetic analysis of the sequence of the putative AlkB protein coded for by the amplified DNA fragment revealed that these alkB genes were very likely inherited by horizontal gene transfer. Lastly, the analysis of the biodegradation ability of four strains revealed two different strategies of hydrocarbon uptake, mediated either by bio-surfactants and peculiar of Rhodococcus isolates, or by membrane modifications and shown by Alcaligenes isolates. In order to understand the interrelationships between hydrocarbon-degrading isolates, the dynamics of two strains, belonging to Rhodococcus and Alcaligenes, grown together in a co-culture was also followed over a seventeen days period.  相似文献
