The Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, is a flatfish with increasing interest in the European aquaculture. However, one of the main limitations found in this species is related to the scarce attraction to commercial aquafeeds, thus determining low feed intake in fish farms. The aim of this study was to evaluate four ingredients of marine origin (fish meal hydrolysate [FMH], polychaete meal [POM], mussel meal [MUM], and squid meal [SQM]) as potential attractants for juvenile Senegalese sole. Four experimental feeds containing 10% of the potential attractants, plus a control diet without these ingredients, were evaluated. A total of 150 fish were distributed into ten 40‐L tanks (duplicate tanks per feed). A Latin square design was carried out, and hence all the experimental diets were offered to each tank in successive periods of 7 d. Fish were fed twice a day (morning and afternoon), and the feeding behavior of the animals was assessed by direct observations. Behavioral pattern assessed was classified as distant orientation, near orientation, or continuation of intake. The acceptability index for each behavioral phase and experimental feeds used was established for each observation. No behavioral differences could be noticed between the morning and the afternoon feedings. FMH showed the greatest attractant potential than among the ingredients assessed, and consequently this ingredient yielded the higher feed intake rates. Sanding is a common practice required in order to prepare wood surfaces for coating. Little literature is available regarding the effect of sanding parameters on the quality of surfaces. Sugar maple wood surfaces were evaluated in samples that had been sanded using two types of abrasive minerals, three grit sizes and four feed speeds. Roughness, wetting properties and cell damage were used to assess surface quality. Both abrasives decreased roughness and cell damage from 100- to 120-grit sanding stage. Addition of a 150-grit stage did not further reduce the roughness, whereas the cell damage continued to decrease. Increasing feed speed led to rougher surfaces due to higher fibrillation. Surfaces produced by silicon carbide were smoother and less damaged than those obtained with aluminum oxide. However, the surfaces sanded with aluminum oxide were more wettable and showed no significant difference in wetting time as a function of grit size. ent-kaurenoic acid (KA) isolated from Viguiera robusta was tested for activity on vascular smooth muscle contactility. Cumulative concentration-response curves were obtained for a stepwise increase (10(-10)-10(-05) mol/l) in the concentration of phenylephrine (Phe), a selective alpha(1)-adrenergic agonist. The effects in the presence of KA (0.2, 2.0 and 20.0 microg/ml), and 90 min after the removal of KA from the medium bath were compared to controls. At 20.0 microg/ml, KA inhibited the in vitro contractility of rat carotid artery elicited by Phe, but had no effect at lower concentrations (0.2 and 2.0 microg/ml). This study compared the responses shown by lactating dairy cows to four different P4-based protocols for AI at estrus. Cows with no estrous signs 96 h after progesterone intravaginal device (PRID) removal were subjected to fixed-time AI (FTAI), and their data were also included in the study. In Experiment I, follicular/luteal and endometrial dynamics were assessed every 12 h from the beginning of treatment until AI. The estrous response was examined in Experiment II, and fertility was assessed in both experiments. The protocols consisted of a PRID fitted for five days, along with the administration of different combinations of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), equine chorionic gonadotropin and a single or double dose (24 h apart) of prostaglandin F2α. In Experiment I (40 cows), animals receiving GnRH at the start of treatment showed a significantly higher ovulation rate during the PRID insertion period while estrus was delayed. In Experiment II (351 cows),
according to the odds ratios, cows showing luteal activity at the time of treatment were less likely to show estrus than cows with no signs of luteal activity. Treatment affected the estrous response and the interval from PRID removal to estrus but did not affect conception rates 28–34 days post AI. Primiparous cows displayed a better estrous response than multiparous cows. Our findings reveal acceptable results of 5-day P4-based protocols for AI at estrus in high-producing dairy cows. Casein (CN) micelles are colloidal aggregates of protein dispersed in milk, the importance of which in the dairy industry is related to functionality and yield in dairy products. The objective of this work was to investigate the correlation of milk CN micelles diameter from Holstein and Zebu crossbreds with milk composition (protein, fat, lactose, total and nonfat solids and milk urea nitrogen), somatic cell count (SCC), age, lactation stage and production. Average casein micelles diameters of milk samples obtained from 200 cows were measured using photon correlation spectroscopy and multiple regression analysis was used to find relationship between variables. CN micelle diameter, SCC and nonfat solids were different between animals with different Holstein crossbreed ratios, which suggests influence of genetic factors, mammary gland health and milk composition. Overall, results indicate the potential use of CN micelle diameter as a tool to select animals to produce milk more suitable to cheese production. 相似文献
