Phenol is a typical contaminant of the environment generated by many industries. Several fungi had been reported to degrade phenol as the only source of carbon and energy, but many of them are not useful to apply in soil bioremediation process. In this work, we study the dynamics of phenol degradation by a Penicillium chrysogenum, isolated from soil. Degradation of phenol was studied at room temperature and resting mycelium conditions. High specific degradation rates were obtained. Inhibition was observed on the specific growth rate (30?mg?l1) and the degradation rate (200?mg?l?1). Experimental results were fitted to several models during exponential phase, with the Andrews-Haldane model given the best fit. Dynamic mass balance equations for biomass and phenol during the exponential and stationary growth phases were solved and compared very satisfactorily to experimental outcomes. P. chrysogenum degrades phenol completely during the exponential and stationary growth phases. The results obtained are relevant for its practical applications in soil decontamination processes. Model predictions were satisfactory. This is the first work which describes a kinetic model for phenol biodegradation using a filamentous fungus considering both, exponential and stationary phases, and the first one in which a Penicillium isolate is used.  相似文献

The area occupied by colonies of the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus; BTPD henceforth) in northwestern Mexico was dramatically reduced between 1988 and 2005. We conducted a quantitative assessment of the distributional changes of these BTPD colonies during the periods 1988–2000 and 2000–2005 focusing on the potential roles of plant biomass, landscape configuration, habitat loss, and habitat suitability. We used remote sensing and GIS tools to characterize habitat and landscape conditions at areas of extinction and persistence at the beginning of each period. Based on this information, we contrasted areas of extinction and persistence within single BTPD colonies, and used logistic regression to model extinction of entire colonies. The greatest levels of reduction, fragmentation and extinction of colonies occurred between 1988 and 2000. The trend of reduction continued between 2000 and 2005 because the largest colony became smaller and fragmented, driving the area down, however, the rest of the towns showed a marginal increase. During the first period, extinction of entire colonies was higher in smaller colonies occupying low-biomass areas. Both extinction models and raw data indicate that colony area lost to agriculture and urbanization was relatively low for both periods. Because the period exhibiting the highest colony area loss coincided with a severe period of drought (1994–1995), we hypothesized that an unusually high food shortage could be the driving force behind this generalized reduction in colonies. Our results suggest that BTPD populations are sensitive to size and isolation effects mainly in the context of severe drought. Because changes in precipitation have profound impacts on plant productivity and composition in arid ecosystems, BTPD populations at the southernmost edge of their geographic range are especially vulnerable to drought and desertification processes, and therefore to climate disruption.  相似文献

Circulating concentrations of estradiol (E2), vitellogenin (VTG), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and insulin were measured in reproductively maturing four and five year-old Atlantic salmon. Blood samples were collected from the fish in seawater for one year prior to their spawning in November in fresh water. In females, E2 and VTG were low but detectable from December to July, and then increased to peak levels in September and October. Plasma levels of T4 and T3 were relatively constant in winter and spring, and decreased in July. Plasma concentration of T4 increased in November when the fish returned to fresh water. Plasma T3 levels remained low during the autumn. Both T4 and T3 levels tended to be higher in males than in females during September through November. Plasma insulin concentrations increased during the spring to peak values in May, and then decreased in June and July in fish of both sexes. There was a significant elevation of plasma insulin in males during October, and the levels in males tended to be higher than those found in females during final maturation.  相似文献

The guarani group of Drosophila genus (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is formed by 24 species however the relationship of these species is not clear. In the present study are described the karyotypes of Drosophila sachapuyu Peñafiel and Rafael, 2018 and Drosophila zamorana Peñafiel and Rafael, 2018, two Andean species members of the guarani group. Mitotic chromosomes from cerebral ganglia of third stand larval were obtained by thermal shock and cell suspension techniques. The karyotype of D. sachapuyu, presents 2n = 10 (4R, 1V; X = R, Y = R) while D. zamorana exhibits karyotype 2n = 12 (5R, 1V; X = V, Y = R).  相似文献

The clinical and laboratory findings in puppies naturally infected with canine coronavirus (CCoV) and/or canine parvovirus (CPV) were compared with findings in uninfected puppies. Lymphopenia was the only parameter related to CCoV infection that was statistically significant; vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, hemorrhagic fluid diarrhea, leukopenia, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, hypoglycemia, and hypoproteinemia were correlated with CPV infection.  相似文献

We compare the accuracy of predicting the occurrence of 11 bird species in montane meadows of the Greater Yellowstone National Park ecosystem, in the states of Montana and Wyoming, USA. We used remotely sensed, landscape, and habitat data. The meadow type, as determined from the remotely sensed data, was highly correlated with abundances of six of the 11 bird species. Landscape variables significant in predicting occurrence were selected using a stepwise multiple regression for each bird species. These variables were then used in a multiple regression with the variable meadow type. As expected, the abundances of the generalist species (American Robin, Dark-eyed Junco, White-crowned Sparrow, Brewer's Blackbird, and Chipping Sparrow) were not strongly correlated with landscape variables or meadow type. Conversely, abundances of the Common Snipe, Common Yellowthroat, Lincoln's Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, and Yellow Warbler were highly correlated with meadow type and landscape variables such as percent cover of willow (Salix spp.), graminoid, woody vegetation, sagebrush (Artemisia spp.), and graminoid and shrub biomass. The results from our study indicate that remotely sensed data are applicable for estimating potential habitats for bird species in the different types of montane meadows. However, to improve predictions about species in specific sites or areas, we recommend the use of additional landscape metrics and habitat data collected in the field.  相似文献
