Effective altruism is a conceptual approach and emerging social movement that uses data-driven reasoning to channel social economy resources toward philanthropic activities. Priority cause areas for effective altruists include global poverty, existential risks to humanity, and animal welfare. Indeed, a significant subset of the movement argues that animal factory farming, in particular, is a problem of great scope, one that is overly neglected and offers the potential for massive reductions in global suffering. This paper explores the philosophical and methodological tenets of these “effective animal advocates,” offering empirical qualitative insight into their motivations and perspectives. The work also considers the implications of the effective altruists’ entrance into the arena of animal advocacy, taking note of how various factions within both the effective altruist and animal protection movements have received their conceptual and practical interventions. The research highlights several potential contributions of the effective animal advocates, as their commitment to evaluate and amplify pragmatic solutions to the problems of animal suffering has the opportunity to shift institutional and consumer behaviors in ways the animal protection movement has struggled to do in the past. At the same time, key issues related to the community’s research rigor and measurability biases, its lack of demographic diversity, and its tendency to valorize corporate-driven technological solutions open it up to criticism from internal and external detractors alike.  相似文献

Decay rates of stems, branches and roots were assessed in Pinus radiata (D. Don) plantation forests located throughout New Zealand. Stem and branch decay rates were obtained using (1) post-harvest material from two central North Island locations (Kaingaroa and Tarawera Forests) based on a 10-year chronosequence (in ground contact or suspended) and (2) post-thinning stems and attached branch material from five sites covering a range of climatic conditions across New Zealand (Woodhill, Puruki, Hokonui, Nemona and Selwyn) with up to 5 years of decay. Stem, stump and root decay rates were determined from two central North Island locations (Kinleith and Puruki) from thinnings with 0, 5, and 10 years of decay (Kinleith) and mature trees at 0 and 11 years of decay (Puruki). Stem and branch post-harvest material decayed faster when in contact with the ground than when elevated above the ground. The proportion of material elevated or in ground contact was not estimated in this study. P. radiata discs from young trees and post-harvest residue showed no significant diameter effect on decay rate and could be used confidently to predict whole stem decay rate. Discs from older trees covering a larger diameter range at Puruki showed a significant effect of diameter on decay rate. Decay rates of coarse roots at the two central North Island sites were faster than above-ground whole stem decay rates. Exponential models incorporating mean annual temperature for P. radiata stems in ground contact arising from thinning and harvest currently provide the best estimate of residue decay in New Zealand. There was no increase in carbon concentration with decay, suggesting that live stem values may be applied to all dead wood for determining the mass of carbon change with decomposition. Nitrogen concentrations increased with decay.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if the factors affecting the abortion rate in dairy herds with high incidence of Neospora‐associated abortions are different in pregnancies of cows and heifers chronically infected with Neospora caninum. In heifers (n = 229), an increase in the cumulative number of days with a mean relative humidity (RH) lower than 60% during the second trimester of gestation increases the risk of abortion. Yet, the likelihood of abortion was 7.6 times lower for pregnant heifers inseminated with Limousin bull semen, compared with those inseminated with Holstein‐Friesian bull semen. In pregnancies of parous cows (n = 521), an increase in rainfall and in the cumulative number of days with a mean RH lower than 60% during the second trimester of gestation increased the abortion rate. However, in contrast, an increase in the lactation number produced a decrease in the abortion rate, with a likelihood of abortion 4.8 times lower for pregnant cows inseminated with Limousin bull semen, and three times lower for those inseminated with Belgian Blue bull semen, compared with dairy cows inseminated with Holstein‐Friesian bull semen. Finally, the likelihood of abortion was 3.2 times lower for pregnancies of parous cows with low antibody titres against N. caninum (6–30 units) as compared to those with high antibody titres (≥30 units), whereas in heifers this variable had no effect. The practical recommendations of the present study include the control of the cow environment during the second trimester of gestation, the priority of culling for parous cows with higher antibody titres against N. caninum and the insemination of Neospora‐seropositive cows with semen from the Limousin breed.  相似文献

Several methods are used to measure lipid peroxidation (LPO) in spermatozoa. The objective of this study was comparing the thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) method and the BODIPY 581/591 C11 (B581) and BODIPY 665/676 C11 (B665) fluorescent probes to measure induced peroxidative damage in thawed epididymal spermatozoa from Iberian red deer. Samples from three males were thawed, pooled, diluted in PBS, incubated at room temperature and assessed at 0, 3, 6 and 24 h under different experimental conditions: Control, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 0.1 mm or 1 mm , or tert‐butyl hydroperoxide (TBH) 0.1 mm or 1 mm . LPO was assessed by the TBARS assay [malondialdehyde (MDA) detection] and by the fluorescence probes B581 and B665 (microplate fluorimeter and flow cytometry). Increasing MDA levels were only detectable at 1 mm of TBH or H2O2. Both fluorescence probes, measured with fluorometer, detected significant increases of LPO with time in all treatments, except Control. Flow cytometry allowed for higher sensitivity, with both probes showing a significant linear relationship of increasing LPO with time for all oxidizing treatments (p < 0.001). All methods showed a good agreement, except TBARS, and flow cytometry showed the highest repeatability. Our results show that both B581 and B665 might be used for LPO analysis in Iberian red deer epididymal spermatozoa, together with fluorometry or flow cytometry. Yet, the TBARS method offered comparatively limited sensitivity, and further research must determine the source of that limitation.  相似文献

The effects on anabolic steroid implantation on feedlot performance and carcass composition and quality were examined in control (CNTRL), ovariectomized (OVX) or melengestrol acetate-fed (MGA) beef heifers or heifers actively immunized against GnRH (Anti-GnRH). Heifers (n = 112) were assigned randomly to a 2 x 4 factorial experiment. The two classes were made up of heifers not implanted and those implanted with Synovex-H. The four treatments were 1) CNTRL, 2) MGA, 3) OVX and 4) Anti-GnRH. Heifers were housed in individual pens and fed a high-energy diet for the 4-mo study. Synovex-H increased final live weight (P less than .005), carcass weight (P less than .005), ADG (P less than .0001) and feed efficiency (P less than .005) but did not alter carcass quality and yield grade (P greater than .05). Synovex-H increased deposition of protein (P less than .0001) and reduced deposition of fat (P less than .0001). Oral administration of MGA had no significant effect on feedlot performance or carcass quality. For heifers not implanted, active immunization against GnRH, but not ovariectomy, depressed ADG (P less than .05) and increased fat deposition (P less than .05) while reducing protein deposition (P less than .05). These effects of active immunization were reversed by concurrent administration of Synovex-H. Feedlot performance and carcass composition of heifers were improved by administration of anabolic steroids. When heifers were housed singly, neither ovariectomy, active immunization against GnRH nor oral administration of MGA improved feedlot performance of heifers implanted with Synovex-H.  相似文献

Lamb carcass (n = 100) were selected from USDA yield grades (YG) 2, 3, and 4 and carcass weight (CW) groups 20.4 to 24.9, 25.0 to 29.5, and 29.6 to 34.0 kg. Lamb carcass were fabricated into semiboneless and boneless subprimals and trimmed to three s.c. fat trim levels: .64, .25, and .00 cm of fat remaining. Innovative subprimals were fabricated and yields were calculated for the subprimals and dissectible components (lean, bone, connective tissue, external fat, and seam fat) from each of the various subprimals. Carcass weight as a main effect in a two-way analysis of variance did not account for a significant amount of the variation in yield among trimmed subprimals or the percentage of the dissectible components, but USDA YG was a significant main effect in determining variation in yield for many of the subprimals or dissectible components. Muscle seaming of shoulders and legs and removal of excessive tails on the loin and rack resulted in a majority of the seam fat being removed from these cuts. Dissection data clearly showed that seam fat is a major component of rack and shoulder cuts and with increasing fatness or higher numerical yield grade there are clearly increased amounts of this depot. Increased trimming of external fat magnifies and draws more attention to the amount of seam fat remaining. Production of heavy, lean lambs would be more useful in an innovative type of program because of the larger-sized muscles. Heavy, fat lambs would not be as useful because of their decreased yields and excess seam fat located in cuts that cannot be muscled-seamed because of the loss of retail cut integrity. Seam fat was highly correlated to percentage of kidney and pelvic fat and to external fat thickness and with USDA yield grade but was not strongly correlated to carcass weight.  相似文献
