Lesser kestrel Falco naumanni and Eurasian kestrel Falco tinnunculus are two small raptor species commonly breeding in open agro-pastoral systems that have suffered a dramatic decline in their populations during the past few decades due to changes in land use. Direct intoxication by chemicals used in farming has been one of the causes proposed promoting population declines in both species. However, there have been no studies exploring the degree of kestrel intoxication at individual or population levels in the wild. We investigated the inter-population variation in blood levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in nestlings of Spanish Lesser and Eurasian kestrels. AChE was used as an estimator of the degree of organophosphorus (OP) and/or carbamate (CB) exposure or intoxication. In addition, we measured the albumin-globulin ratio (A/G) as an index of general health status. We found only extremely low AChE levels in lesser kestrels from one of the seven studied populations. In addition, we did not find differences in nestling AChE levels between pastoral and agricultural habitats. Furthermore, the present study revealed that two of the seven lesser kestrel populations are suffering from poor health conditions, in one case due to OP-CB poisoning, and the other possibly due to a pathogen infection as suggested by the low A/G ratio observed. Thus, our study suggests that, in general, OP and/or CB pesticide poisoning in traditional agro-pastoral systems in Spain is not currently an important conservation factor for either Lesser or Eurasian kestrels chicks. 相似文献
This study describes milk production and milk composition of Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) females (hinds) and the effect of calving date and BW change of hinds by milking over 34 wk. All hinds produced milk throughout the 34-wk study period, well over the standard lactation period. Total milk yield was 224.1 +/- 21.1 L, and daily production was 0.91 +/- 0.06 L. Milk yield decreased with lactation stage (P = 0.01) and the later a calf was born (P = 0.008), and it was greater in posterior quarters (P < 0.05). Milk yield was unaffected (P > 0.10) by side position or milking order of the udder. Milk production did not correlate with hind BW (P > 0.1). Hinds lost 4.4% BW during lactation (P < 0.001); losses increased the later a calf was born (P = 0.012). Iberian red deer milk had 11.5% fat, 7.6% protein, 5.9% lactose, and 26.7% DM. Stage of lactation affected fat (P < 0.001), protein (P = 0.002), DM (P < 0.001), and protein:fat ratio (P < 0.001), but not lactose (P > 0.1). These constituents became concentrated as lactation proceeded, and protein was substituted by fat. Calving date had a similar concentrating effect on fat (P < 0.001) and DM (P < 0.001), whereas it decreased lactose (P = 0.015) and protein (P = 0.002), thus producing a substitution of protein by fat (ratio of protein to fat, P < 0.001). Milking order of quarters or their position had no effect on milk composition (P > 0.10). Results suggest that milk production and milk energetic quality might increase by advancing calving date in red deer hinds. 相似文献
The developing countries of the Pacific Region consist of 27 countries and territories with a total nd area of 542 000 km2 and over 5 million inhabitants. Though highly variable in physical characteristics and land-use pattern, these countries, in general, give a higher priority for production of export crops over other agricultural crops, so that they are net importers of food. Natural forests of the region are luxuriant and floristically rich, but the level of their commercial exploitation is low. Swidden cultivation is the mainstay of subsistence livelihood, but with the increase in population, the system is now causing severe environmental and land-use problems. The major agroforestry systems and practices in the region include various forms of combination of tree crops such as coffee, coconut and cacao with nitrogen fixing trees such as Casuarina, Gliricidia and Leucaena, and food crops (mostly tubers) such as cassava, taro, sweet potato and yams. Additionally, some improvements to swidden (shifting) cultivation are also being tried in several places, the most common being the u use of Casuarina oligodon before abandoning the swidden as in PNG highlands, and intercropping food crops in tree crop stands.Land tenure system in most of the countries is the traditional clan of extended family control over land. This can have either positive or negative influence on the adoption of agroforestry practices depending on the extent and duration of tenancy tenure enjoyed by the assignees of land.Several governments of the region are now promoting the agroforestry approach. In hilly areas with poor access, farmers are forced to produce most of their basic necessities locally. On the other hand, the lack of roads and communication facilities can pose a problem in marketing any surplus products they have. The immediate opportunity in agroforestry in the region lies in making better use of the unexplored potential of a large number of locally available trees and agricultural crops. Intercropping in tree crop stands and the taungya system seem to propromising m methods for the Pacific region.Researh Fellow, July–September, 1984 相似文献
Reproductive variables from 1529 females and 168 males of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. 1758 were recorded individually during the 1995 spawning season at a salmon farm in the south of Chile. The spawning period occurred in autumn and lasted 43 days, with a peak occurring in the first week of May. Average mature female and male body weights were 6.4 ± 0.9 kg and 7.0 ± 1.0 kg respectively. Average total and relative fecundity of females were 5998 ± 1404 eggs and 946 ± 210 eggs kg?1 respectively. Female body weight showed a similar pattern of correlation with total and relative fecundity observed in other salmonids. Average total and relative volume of ejaculate of males were 47.7 ± 32.8 cm3 kg?1 and 7.26 ± 5.44 cm3 kg?1, respectively, with the latter being lower than the values reported in the literature. Furthermore, male weight showed a negative correlation with these variables, in contrast to a positive value reported for these correlations in the northern hemisphere. Ejaculate volume showed a positive correlation with date of stripping. Average sperm density (5.83 ± 3.75 sperm cm?3 10?9) was lower than the values found in the literature and could be explained by the higher ejaculate volumes. 相似文献
Capture‐based aquaculture (CBA) is a strategy to capture wild aquatic organisms for rearing. The most iconic species produced under this scheme are bluefin tunas. In Mexico, CBA of this species is developed with Pacific bluefin tunas (PBFT). The parametrization of a biological production function able to describe biomass dynamics during the production cycle is one of the strategies that can help optimize production. The objective of this study was to explain biomass dynamics in capture‐based Pacific Bluefin tuna aquaculture in Mexican waters through parameterization of a growth and survival model. This study also assessed the impact of uncertain intrinsic CBA variables (i.e. seed weight, number of stocked individuals and sea surface temperature [SST] variability). The model was parameterized with production records of 47 net pens in two production sites (an offshore and an inshore facility) during three cycles. The results suggested that production performance was related to SST given that this factor affected survival, mainly during the first ≈40 days after stocking. The risk analysis showed that stocking during the second half of the fishing season from June to August increased the likelihood of matching or exceeding the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) defined regarding biomass increase per pen. 相似文献
In this study, we describe what we term a Blue Transition, defined as the passage from fish biomass reduction to recovery in exploited aquatic resources, enabled by aquaculture. A Blue Transition is a key component of emergent “blue” discourses which support that the expansion of aquaculture would relieve pressure on declining capture fisheries, thus contributing to global food security, particularly of the poorest populations. Based on global secondary data and the case of Chile, we explore the evidence of such claim and the implications of a Blue Transition for fisheries and aquaculture development. In 2012, worldwide aquaculture production surpassed wild captures; nevertheless, such turnaround would have not taken place without China's contribution. In Chile, this turnaround occurred in 2014, concurrently with the lowest industrial landings registered since the 1960s (1,227,359 tons). Chile's aquaculture is not relieving wild fisheries or satisfying food demands of the lower income population, in the country or elsewhere. Salmon, the main aquaculture product, is destined mainly to Japan, Russia and United States where, due to its high prices, it is consumed mostly by wealthy consumers. For the case at hand, evidence suggests that a blue transition may be underway but is going in the wrong direction: from what may have been sustainable fisheries management before the 1970s to the overexploited wild fisheries of today. 相似文献
The switching pattern between behavioral modes provides a mechanistic basis for understanding how animals perceive and memorize the habitat quality in their home ranges.
Objectives
We assessed if Magellanic woodpeckers (Campephilus magellanicus) move based on habitat quality at local (neighboring trees) and home range scales.
Methods
We used state-space models to examine the relationship between remotely-sensed estimates of habitat quality (tree decay) and movement of adult woodpeckers tracked with GPS telemetry in southern Chile.
Results
Woodpeckers spent most time (>?80%) in the area-restricted search (ARS) mode in contrast to the exploratory transient mode, characterized by frequent directional displacements (>?50 m). The extent to which individuals switched between behavioral modes was related to habitat quality at different scales. Woodpeckers switched to and remained in the ARS mode when encountering moderate levels of heterogeneity in habitat quality. At very low or high heterogeneity levels, however, individuals switched to and remained in the transient mode, respectively. Likewise, as habitat quality declined locally and across home range, woodpeckers were more likely to adopt a transient mode.
Conclusions
Although woodpeckers seemed to easily perceive and memorize habitat quality at different spatial scales, our results suggest that spatial memory will less effective under extreme levels of habitat heterogeneity.
The development of dominant follicles requires the parallel growth of a vascular network, regulated by VEGF and its receptors VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2. Here, we demonstrate the presence of mRNA for the soluble forms of VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 by RT-PCR and the respective proteins by Western blot, in bovine dominant follicles. The 3' end of the mRNA coding region and the deduced C-terminal amino acid sequence of the bovine VEGFR soluble forms were similar to those previously described in human and mice. The relative abundance of sVEGFR-1 was higher in dominant follicles of day 4, decreasing on day 6 and further on day 9 of the cycle. In contrast, sVEGFR-2 expression was low on day 4 follicles and increased as the cycle advanced, becoming greater on day 9. The changes of sVEGFR-1 and sVEGFR-2 with the age of the bovine dominant follicle indicate a physiological role in its growth and atresia. 相似文献
Although the edge effect is known to be an important factor influencing the recruitment of trees in temperate forests, little is known of its synergistic relationships with landscape and fragment attributes.
Objectives
We investigated how the edge effect on regeneration of oaks (Quercus spp.) varies with respect to fragment geometry, connectivity and landscape composition.
Methods
We recorded oak sapling density along edge-interior gradients in 29 forest fragments at the periphery of Mexico City and examined the data with Generalized Additive Models.
Results
A nonlinear and landscape-mediated edge effect was supported by data, including the interactions of the edge distance with patch connectivity, shape and size. Saplings were more abundant at a distance of ca. 50 m from the edge of small, large and connected patches, but large patches also exhibited reduced recruitment towards the interior of the patch. Conversely, sapling density in simple-shaped or connected patches was lower at the edge, exhibiting linear and concave-down increase trends towards the interior of patches, respectively.
Conclusions
Boundary conditions could be interacting with interior forest conditions, making regeneration more frequent at 50 m from the edge. Shady and cooler sites in large patches may be inhibiting oak regeneration. The activity of acorn-dispersing animals and oak predators may increase in unconnected patches, thus increasing the likelihood of edge effects. These results provide insights into the restoration of temperate forest patches in heterogeneous fragmented landscapes.
