Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) was diagnosed (postmortem) in a sheep with clinical signs attributable to a central nervous system disease. The sheep was febrile and initially had front limb incoordination, which progressed to paralysis of both front and hind limbs during a course of 2 days. The sheep maintained an alert attitude with the ability to eat up to the time of euthanasia. The only clinical pathologic abnormalities were neutrophilia and lymphopenia without appreciable leukocytosis, a moderate hyperglycemia, and an elevated creatine kinase. Treatment included hydrotherapy for lowering body temperature, intravenous fluids, thiamine hydrochloride, tetanus antitoxin, antibiotics, and corticosteroids. The only gross lesion at the time of necropsy was a wet glistening surface of the brain (leptomeninges). Microscopically, there was severe nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis, poliomyelitis, and polyradiculoneuritis with mild multifocal neutrophilic infiltration. The EEE virus was isolated from the brain, and subsequent fluorescent antibody testing for EEE was positive on cell culture.  相似文献

A two-year study was conducted in northern Germany to investigate the effects of the fenbendazole slow release (SR) bolus on trichostrongyle infections in cattle. Two groups of dairy replacement calves were either given a bolus at their first turncut on pasture or treated with fenbendazole suspension twice in mid-summer and at housing. Bolus-treated and control animals were set stocked on separate pastures during their first grazing season (26 weeks) and grazed together during the second year (24 weeks). During the first season the bolus prevented substantially the output of strongyle eggs for more than four months resulting in a lower infection risk in late summer and autumn as compared to the control group. The plasma pepsinogen concentrations remained low in the bolus-treated cattle during their first grazing period but rose in the controls soon after turnout which indicated increasing trichostrongyle-caused damages of the abomasal mucosa. During the following housing period and the second grazing season the bolus-treated animals showed higher egg counts than the controls. No clinical sign of parasitic gastroenteritis and no patent lungworm infections were observed during the study. The bolus-treated cattle performed better than the control animals during both grazing seasons although the control group had compensated temporarily the group difference in weight gains during the housing period. In conclusion, the use of the fenbendazole SR bolus may impair the development of immunity to trichostrongyle infections to some extent but, under the present conditions, this does not seem of clinical or economic importance.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate dietary galactooligosaccharide (Gal OS) addition on swine nutrient digestibility, ileal and fecal bacterial populations, and ileal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and to determine their impact on ileal fermentative characteristics in vitro. Twelve T-cannulated pigs (BW = 25 kg) were fed a diet free of Gal OS for 21 d. On d 22, ileal digesta samples were collected for an in vitro fermentation experiment (Exp. 1). Substrates included: raffinose/stachyose combination (R + S), soy solubles (SS), and transgalactooligosaccharides (TOS). Also included were the non-OS components of SS and TOS. Nine pigs (three donors per treatment) served as ileal effluent donors. Each substrate was fermented in vitro for 6 h, and pH and SCFA and gas production were determined. Pigs then were allotted to three treatments: a Gal OS-free control diet and the control diet with either 3.5% added Gal OS from SS or TOS. Diets, feces, and digesta samples collected weekly for 6 wk on d 6 (feces) and 7 (digesta) were analyzed for DM, OM, CP, and chromic oxide concentrations. Feces and ileal digesta were analyzed for bifidobacteria and lactobacilli populations. Ileal digesta samples were analyzed for SCFA. On d 64, a second in vitro fermentation experiment (Exp. 2) was conducted using ileal effluent from three pigs per treatment and the same substrates used in Exp. 1. In vivo results showed that ileal and total tract DM and OM digestion were decreased (P < 0.05) by addition of both SS and TOS to the diet. Ileal and total-tract N digestibilities were decreased (P < 0.05) by dietary addition of SS. Fecal bifidobacteria and lactobacilli were increased (P < 0.05) by addition of SS and TOS to the diet. Ileal propionate and butyrate concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) for pigs fed diets containing both sources of Gal OS. In vitro results showed that fermentation data were not affected by donor animal adaptation to treatment. For both in vitro experiments, gas and SCFA production were higher (P < 0.05) for R + S than for SS or TOS. Fermentation of R + S resulted in a higher pH (P < 0.05) than did SS or TOS. Fermentation of non-OS components of SS and TOS resulted in more (P < 0.05) gas and SCFA production, and pH values that did not differ (P > 0.05) compared to SS and TOS. The Gal OS used in this study were prebiotics, increasing beneficial bacteria in vivo and SCFA concentrations both in vivo and in vitro.  相似文献

Inclusion of potato-processing waste (PW) from the frozen potato products industry in high-grain beef cattle finishing diets was evaluated in two studies. In a randomized complete block design, 125 crossbred yearling heifers (365 +/- 0.3 kg initial BW; five pens per treatment; five heifers per pen) were used to evaluate PW level on feedlot performance and meat quality. Heifers were fed for 85 (two blocks) or 104 d (three blocks). In a digestion study, four ruminally, duodenally, and ileally cannulated Holstein steers (474.7 +/- 26.6 kg initial BW) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design to evaluate effects of PW level on ruminal fermentation, site of digestion, and microbial protein synthesis. The control diet for both studies contained 80% corn, 10% alfalfa hay, 5% concentrated separator by-product (CSB), and 5% supplement (DM basis). Potato waste replaced corn and separator by-product (DM basis) in the diet at 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% in the feedlot study, and at 0, 13, 27, and 40% in the digestion study. In the feedlot study, DMI decreased (linear; P = 0.007) with increasing inclusion of PW. Increasing PW decreased ADG and feed efficiency from 0 to 30% and then increased at 40% (quadratic; P < 0.01). Calculated dietary NEg concentrations did not differ among treatments (P = 0.18). Hot carcass weight decreased as PW increased from 0 to 30% and then increased at 40% PW (cubic; P < 0.01). Fat thickness and longissimus muscle area decreased with increasing PW (linear; P < 0.05). Level of PW did not affect marbling or liver scores (P > 0.30). No difference (P > 0.20) was observed for Warner-Bratzler shear force at 0, 10, 20, and 30% PW levels; however, 40% PW resulted in lower (P = 0.05) shear force values. Taste panel scores for juiciness and flavor intensity did not differ with increasing PW (P > 0.30). Steaks from cattle fed 0% were scored less tender than 10 and 40% PW (cubic; P < 0.05). In the digestion study, DMI decreased (quadratic; P < 0.01) with increasing PW. Ruminal pH and total VFA concentration increased (linear; P < 0.05) and true N disappearance from the stomach complex and apparent total-tract N disappearance decreased with increasing level of PW (linear; P < 0.01). Starch intake and ruminal disappearance decreased with increasing level of PW (quadratic; P < 0.05). Inclusion of PW decreased feedlot performance, with little effect on carcass characteristics or meat quality. Optimal inclusion of PW in finishing diets may depend on the cost of transportation and other dietary ingredients.  相似文献

A 2-yr study was conducted to determine the first limiting nutrient for gain in nursing calves grazing native range in southeastern North Dakota. Thirty-two calves (20 steers, 12 heifers) in Trial 1 (169 +/- 5 kg initial BW) and 31 (16 steers, 15 heifers) in Trial 2 (214 +/- 5 kg initial BW) grazed common pastures. Calves were blocked by sex and stratified by weight. Calves were stratified by age of dam in Trial 1 and by pretrial milk intake (MI) in Trial 2. Treatments were nonsupplemented control (CON); energy supplement (ENERGY; 100% soyhulls); degradable intake protein supplement (DIP; 68% soyhulls, 32% SBM); and degradable with undegradable intake protein supplement (DIP+UIP; 80% sulfite-liquor treated SBM, 16% feather meal, 4% blood meal). In Trial 2, 5% molasses was added to all supplements with the ratios of other ingredients held constant. Supplements were formulated to be similar in NE. The DIP and DIP+UIP supplements supplied equal amounts of degradable protein. Supplemented calves were fed individually, with similar supplement DMI. Weight and MI were measured in July, August, and September. Forage intake (FI) was measured in July, August, and September of Trial 1 and July and August of Trial 2. Gain data were analyzed as a randomized complete block and MI and FI as a split-plot in time. Orthogonal contrasts were used to separate means and included CON vs supplemented, ENERGY vs protein, and DIP vs DIP+UIP. No trial effect or trial x treatment interactions (minimum P-value = 0.30) were detected for ADG. Supplemented calves gained faster than CON (P = 0.06). No other contrast differences were observed (minimum P-value = 0.50). Treatment did not affect FI (P > or = 0.55). Forage intake was lower (P < 0.001) in Trial 1 than in Trial 2. A linear increase (P = 0.0001) in FI (kg OM/d and percentage BW) occurred over time. Calves in Trial 2 consumed more (P = 0.004) fluid milk than calves in Trial 1, though no difference (P = 0.28) was observed relative to BW. No treatment or period differences were detected for fluid MI (minimum P-value = 0.23). Relative to BW, MI declined linearly (P = 0.0001) with successive periods. Energy may be limiting weight gain of nursing calves grazing native range in southeastern North Dakota.  相似文献
