A 2-yr-old Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) was presented for evaluation of abnormal genitalia and infantile behavior. The oryx had a penis and a scrotum, but testes were not palpable within the scrotum or inguinal canal. The total serum testosterone for the individual was lower than in age-matched males of the same species. Surgical exploration showed markedly hypoplastic intra-abdominal gonads, which demonstrated both testicular and uterine tissue on histologic examination. After karyotype analysis, the individual was classified as an XY male pseudohermaphrodite. This condition resembles two human intersex syndromes: embryonic testicular regression syndrome and partial gonadal dysgenesis syndrome, which occur in familial lines.  相似文献

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale is a gram-negative, rod-shaped, pleomorphic bacterium that has been isolated from flocks of turkeys and broilers from around the world. Infections cause respiratory disease, mortality, and growth suppression, or clinical signs of infection may be absent. In layers, there have been few reports of disease caused by O. rhinotracheale. Acanthocephalan and spargana parasites were identified within a body wall mass during exploratory surgery in a wild green tree snake. Acanthocephalan parasites have not previously been reported in this species. Depression of the in vitro immune response of mouse spleen cell suspensions to sheep erythrocytes by removal of macrophages can be reversed by the addition of supernatants from peritoneal macrophage cultures. Dissociated cells from the spleens of unimmunized mice were cultured with and without various mammalian erythrocytes. Spleen cell suspensions cultured with heterologous red cells developed levels of hemolytic plaque-forming cells only one log(2) less than those seen in vivo. The reaction is specific for the in vitro immunizing erythrocytes. Antibody was demonstrated in the culture fluids.  相似文献   

Probing the Local Effects of Magnetic Impurities on Superconductivity

The local effects of isolated magnetic adatoms on the electronic properties of the surface of a superconductor were studied with a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Tunneling spectra obtained near magnetic adsorbates reveal the presence of excitations within the superconductor's energy gap that can be detected over a few atomic diameters around the impurity at the surface. These excitations are locally asymmetric with respect to tunneling of electrons and holes. A model calculation based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations can be used to understand the details of the local tunneling spectra.  相似文献
