Intensive sampling of a stream draining an alpine-subalpine basin revealed that depressions in pH and acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) of surface water at the beginning of the spring snowmelt in 1987 and 1988 were not accompanied by increases in strong acid anions, and that surface waters did not become acidic (ANC<0). Samples of meltwater collected at the base of the snowpack in 1987 were acidic and exhibited distinct ‘pulses’ of nitrate and sulfate. Solutions collected with lysimeters in forest soils adjacent to the stream revealed high levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total Al. Peaks in concentration of DOC, Al, and nutrient species in the stream samples indicate a flush of soil solution into the surface water at the beginning of the melt. Infiltration of meltwater into soils and spatial heterogeneity in the timing of melting across the basin prevented stream and lake waters from becoming acidic.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg) was measured in stream water and precipitation in the Loch Vale watershed in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, during 2001–2002 to investigate processes controlling Hg transport in high-elevation ecosystems. Total Hg concentrations in precipitation ranged from 2.6 to 36.2 ng/L and showed a strong seasonal pattern with concentrations that were 3 to 4 times higher during summer months. Annual bulk deposition of Hg was 8.3 to 12.4 μ g/m2 and was similar to deposition rates in the Midwestern and Northeastern U.S. Total Hg concentrations in streams ranged from 0.8 to 13.5 ng/L and were highest in mid-May on the rising limb of the snowmelt hydrograph. Stream-water Hg was positively correlated with dissolved organic carbon suggesting organically complexed Hg was flushed into streams from near-surface soil horizons during the early stages of snowmelt. Methylmercury (MeHg) in stream water peaked at 0.048 ng/L just prior to peak snowmelt but was at or below detection (< 0.040 ng/L) for the remainder of the snowmelt season. Annual export of total Hg in Loch Vale streams ranged from 1.2 to 2.3 μ g/m2, which was less than 20% of wet deposition, indicating the terrestrial environment is a net sink of atmospheric Hg. Concentrations of MeHg in stream water and corresponding watershed fluxes were low, indicating low methylation rates or high demethylation rates or both.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To estimate prevalence of canine hip dysplasia (CHD) in Golden Retrievers and Rottweilers and identify sources of bias in published reports. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 200 clinically normal Golden Retrievers and 140 clinically normal Rottweilers between 24 and 60 months of age referred for hip evaluation (group 1) and 93 clinically normal dogs evaluated for Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) hip certification (group 2). PROCEDURE: Hip-extended pelvic radiographs from group 1 dogs were screened for CHD. Radiographs were evaluated twice; the first interpretation used an OFA-type subjective 7-point scoring system, and the second included the caudolateral curvilinear osteophyte as an additional sign of degenerative joint disease. The OFA submission rate of group 2 dogs was determined from the number of official reports returned from the OFA. RESULTS: Prevalence of CHD in Golden Retrievers ranged from 53% to 73% and in Rottweilers ranged from 41% to 69%. Among dogs referred for OFA evaluation, radiographs from 49 (53%) were submitted to OFA. Of submitted radiographs, 45 (92%) were normal; of radiographs not submitted, 22 (50%) were normal. Radiographs with normal-appearing hips were 8.2 times as likely to be submitted to the OFA. Compared with Golden Retrievers, Rottweiler radiographs were significantly more likely to be submitted for OFA certification. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Prevalence of CHD in these 2 breeds may be much higher than previously reported in the United States. Results suggest substantial bias in the OFA database, which causes lower estimates of prevalence of CHD.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of different tumor types within a large cohort of cats with intracranial neoplasia and to attempt to correlate signalment, tumor size and location, and survival time for each tumor. Medical records of 160 cats with confirmed intracranial neoplasia evaluated between 1985 and 2001 were reviewed. Parameters evaluated included age, sex, breed, FeLV/FIV status, clinical signs, duration of signs, number of tumors, tumor location(s), imaging results, treatment, survival times, and histopathologic diagnosis. Most of the cats were older (11.3 +/- 3.8 years). Primary tumors accounted for 70.6% of cases. Metastasis and direct extension of secondary tumors accounted for only 5.6 and 3.8% of cases, respectively. Twelve cats (7.5%) had 2 or more discrete tumors of the same type, whereas 16 cats (10.0%) had 2 different types of intracranial tumors. The most common tumor types were meningioma (n = 93, 58.1%), lymphoma (n = 23, 14.4%), pituitary tumors (n = 14, 8.8%), and gliomas (n = 12, 7.5%). The most common neurological signs were altered consciousness (n = 42, 26.2%), circling (n = 36, 22.5%), and seizures (n = 36, 22.5%). Cats without specific neurological signs were common (n = 34, 21.2%). The tumor was considered an incidental finding in 30 (18.8%) cats. In addition to expected relationships (eg, meninges and meningioma, pituitary and pituitary tumors), we found that lesion location was predictive of tumor type with diffuse cerebral or brainstem involvement predictive of lymphoma and third ventricle involvement predictive of meningioma.  相似文献

Soil water potential (Psi(s)) is often estimated by measuring leaf water potential before dawn (Psi(pd)), based on the assumption that the plant water status has come into equilibrium with that of the soil. However, it has been documented for a number of plant species that stomata do not close completely at night, allowing for nocturnal transpiration and thus preventing nocturnal soil-plant water potential equilibration. The potential for nighttime transpiration necessitates testing the assumption of nocturnal equilibration before accepting Psi(pd) as a valid estimate of Psi(s). We determined the magnitude of disequilibrium between Psi(pd) and Psi(s) in four temperate conifer species across three height classes through a replicated study in northern Idaho. Based on both stomatal conductance and sap flux measurements, we confirmed that the combination of open stomata and high nocturnal atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (D) resulted in nocturnal transpiration in all four species. Nocturnal stomatal conductance (g(s-noc)) averaged about 33% of mid-morning conductance values. We used species-specific estimates of g(s-noc) and leaf specific conductance to correct Psi(pd) values for nocturnal transpiration at the time the samples were collected. Compared with the unadjusted values, corrected values reflected a significantly higher Psi(pd) (when D > 0.12 kPa). These results demonstrate that comparisons of Psi(pd) among species, canopy height classes and sites, and across growing seasons can be influenced by differential amounts of nocturnal transpiration, leading to flawed results. Consequently, it is important to account for the presence of nocturnal transpiration, either through a properly parameterized model or by making Psi(pd) measurements when D is sufficiently low that it cannot drive nocturnal transpiration. Violating these conditions will likely result in underestimation of Psi(s).  相似文献

Marshland drainage channels (=ditches) in the UK are relicts of a once extensive habitat whose management requires quantitative information on the ecology of marshland organisms. Three freshwater gastropods in the UK Red Data Book (RDB), Segmentina nitida, Anisus vorticulus and Valvata macrostoma, are particularly poorly known, and we examined their macro-distribution across 106 ditches on four grazing marshes in SE England. Distribution reflected natural water quality, vegetation and anthropogenic factors. S. nitida occupied shallow calcareous ditches with dense emergent vegetation while A. vorticulus occupied less calcareous ditches with high plant diversity. Ditches with V. macrostoma were dominated by floating plants and slightly elevated chloride. S. nitida and V. macrostoma were absent from otherwise suitable ditches that had elevated nitrate and nitrite indicating effects from eutrophication. Conservation of these three gastropods at the regional scale requires reductions in catchment fertiliser use and also the protection of enough sites to provide the required range of natural factors (e.g., Cl and Ca). At the marsh scale, we suggest that quasi-traditional and rotational ditch clearance can provide the vegetation dynamics and diverse ditch network to ensure suitable habitat for all three species. Better information is required about dispersal, about the effectiveness of reintroduction, and about the most sensitive methods of ditch management.  相似文献

The gastropods Segmentina nitida, Anisus vorticulus and Valvata macrostoma occur in drainage ditches on grazing marshes that are now among the most threatened wetland systems in western Europe. Although each of these species is listed in the UK Red Data Book (RDB) and Biodiversity Action Plan, influences on their distribution are poorly understood.
  • 2. 2. To improve management information, the within‐channel distributions of the three snails were examined in 20 ditches in southeast England. Abundance, vegetation cover and other environmental factors were recorded across the ditch profile near the surface (<0.2m) and at depth (<0.15m from the benthos).
  • 2. 3. All three species were significantly more abundant near the surface than at depth. Below 0.6m, ditches had significantly reduced concentrations of dissolved oxygen (<0.6 mg L?1, <5% saturation), possibly sufficient to limit the occurrence of gastropods dependent wholly or partly on aqueous gas exchange.
  • 2. 4. There were no other systematic variations in abundance between the ditch margins and centre channel. However, across all ditches and samples in the survey, each species' abundance varied significantly with vegetation structure. S. nitida was most numerous where there was least open water and hence most vegetation, V. macrostoma among emergent stands and A. vorticulus in ditches with floating vegetation but few submerged plants.

These microdistributional data support large‐scale surveys in illustrating the potential importance of vegetation management for these snails; providing that other requirements are satisfied, ditch management could favour each RDB species by optimizing particular vegetation features. Apparent preferences for vegetation structure rather than particular channel locations suggest that refuges left during ditch clearance could be located anywhere in the ditch. Factors that reduce oxygen concentrations below 1mg L ?1, such as eutrophication, might be detrimental.

Development of a multianalyte enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of permethrin and aroclors 1248 or 1254 and implementation of the assay for analysis of soil/sediment samples are described. The feasibility of using the multianalyte ELISA to monitor aroclors 1254 and permethrin simultaneously was tested with permethrin and aroclor standards and with aroclor- and permethrin-containing soil/sediment and house dust samples. Comparison of the I?? and I?? values of the multianalyte with those of a single-analyte assay revealed similar results, and multianalyte ELISA determination of analyte amounts in soil/sediment dust samples yielded similar results to those of a single-analyte assay. A single-analyte assay of permethrin content in permethrin-containing dust samples showed that the ELISA can determine the analyte accurately in samples with dust matrix contents ranging from 6.25 to 100 mg as indicated by the good correlation between the results of the immunoassay and those of the gas chromatography analysis.  相似文献

Most durum wheat (Triticum durum) varieties possess only low winter hardiness due to their frost susceptibility. In North America and Central Europe, durum wheat is therefore typically sown in spring to circumvent the local winter conditions. However, the yield potential of durum in these regions could be much better exploited if durum varieties with increased frost tolerance were available, which could be sown in autumn. A factor limiting breeding for increased frost tolerance is the variation in the occurrence of frost stress across years. The ‘Weihenstephaner Auswinterungsanlage’ is a semi‐controlled test that exposes the plants to all weather conditions. Snow coverage of the plants, serving as frost protection, is prevented by the movable glass lid of the semi‐controlled test. In this study, different scorings for frost tolerance based on this semi‐controlled test were evaluated and compared with frost tolerance data in the field. Our results illustrate the potential of the ‘Weihenstephaner Auswinterungsanlage’ as an indirect selection tool for frost tolerance in durum breeding programmes, especially when regular frost tolerance data from the field are not available.  相似文献
