Eighty-eight aromatic cultivars collected from Maharashtra state were assessed for determinants of kernel quality (kernel size-shape, test weight and aroma) and grain morphology such as awning, lemma and palea characters, pubescence, colour of sterile lemma and apiculus colour. We, report seven cultivars—‘Girga’, ‘Kothmirsal’, ‘Kala bhat’, ‘Chimansal’, ‘Jiri’, ‘Kalsal’ ‘Velchi’ and ‘Kali kumud’ as indigenous to southern India. Of the 69 cultivars characterized for agronomic traits 36 cultivars were exquisite genotypes and possessed one or more superior traits such as early flowering, dwarf stature, higher number of productive tiller per plant; long panicles; higher number of filled grains per panicle and strong aroma. Variability in aromatic cultivars was assessed on the basis of nine traits placed aromatic rice cultivars in five clusters. Number of cultivars in each cluster ranged from 1 to 33. 27 significant correlations were obtained in the physical, agronomic and grain morphology traits. Aroma was found to be negatively associated with days to 50% flowering as well as with filled grains per panicle. However, correlation between panicle length and effective tillers with aroma was not observed. Therefore, to increase the yield, improvement in length of panicle and increasing number of productive tillers in medium or mild scented cultivars would be the best strategy.  相似文献

Summary Ipomoea cairica Sweet (Convolvulaceae) exhibits sporophytic self-incompatibility. This has partially been overcome under in vitro conditions, by treating the pollen and/or stigma with 10-5–10-1M indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), the optimum being 10-2M. The self-pollen. which otherwise does not even stick to stigma. germinates after self-pollination provided only one or both the partners are treated. The pollen tubes not only penetrate stigmatic papillae but also traverse the whole length of the style, at least in optimum experimental combinations.  相似文献

Wheat starches isolated from seeds harvested between 7 and 49 days after anthesis (DAA) were fractionated into large (>8 μm) and small (<8 μm) granules and studied for starch structure and architecture. Starch granules at 7 DAA possessed unimodal size distribution, whereas it was bimodal at later maturity stages. The apparent amylose fraction of starch granules at early maturity (7 and 14 DAA) consisted of intermediate‐type materials, whereas starch at later maturity stages (28 and 49 DAA) contained branched amylose. Wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) revealed a well‐developed polymorphic structure already at 7 DAA. Although the presence of a small proportion of B‐type crystallites mixed with A‐type crystallites was observed in the X‐ray diffractogram of starches at early maturation (7 and 14 DAA), it was masked by the A‐type crystallites at later maturity stages. However, the large granules had a higher proportion of B‐type crystallites and lower relative crystallinity (RC) than their small‐granule counterpart. The iodine absorption properties of the starch granules demonstrated different levels of mobility of the starch polymers at different stages of maturity and the mobility of more glucan polymers in the large granule population compared with the small granules at the same maturity stage. Iodine did not change the characteristic A‐type crystalline pattern of starch, but it increased RC. Changes in peak width at half height based on WAXS data further suggested the possible interaction of iodine with amylopectin intercluster chain segments and branch chains in formation of inclusion complexes.  相似文献

Rohu, Labeo rohita (Ham.), fingerlings (average wt 3.38 g) maintained in 25 m2 cement tanks were fed fish-meal-based, 300 g kg−1 protein diets containing different levels (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 g kg−1) of L -carnitine in triplicate over a period of 126 days. Fish that received 0.5 g kg−1 carnitine showed significantly higher growth than those fed the basal diet or the rest of the carnitine diets. Fat digestibility, food conversion efficiency and protein efficiency ratio were better in carnitine-fed fish; however, viscerosomatic and hepatosomatic indices decreased. Muscle proximate composition was affected as a result of carnitine treatment. The results of the present study demonstrate a positive effect of carnitine on the growth and body composition of rohu.  相似文献

The molecular and cellular basis for the enhanced lung pathology and mortality caused by Mannheimia haemolytica in bighorn sheep (BHS, Ovis canadenesis), in comparison to domestic sheep (DS, Ovis aries), is not clear. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) of BHS are four- to eight-fold more susceptible to M. haemolytica leukotoxin-induced cytolysis, which is likely to reduce the number of functional phagocytes in the lung. We hypothesized that enhanced lung pathology is due to defective clearance of M. haemolytica from the lungs of BHS. To test this hypothesis, M. haemolytica (1 × 10(7) colony forming units [cfu]) were inoculated intra-tracheally into three groups each of BHS and DS, which were euthanized and necropsied at 4, 12, and 18 h post-inoculation (hpi). Bacterial and leukocyte counts were performed on broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collected at necropsy. BALF from BHS euthanized at 4 and 12 hpi contained a significantly higher number of M. haemolytica than that from DS. More importantly, DS did not have any bacteria in BALF at 18 hpi, while the BHS still had significant numbers. As expected, the BHS did exhibit more extensive lung lesions at 12 and 18 hpi when compared to DS. At 18 hpi, necrotic PMNs were observed in the lesional lung tissues of BHS, but not DS. Furthermore, BALF from BHS had significantly lower titers of antibodies to Lkt and surface antigens of M. haemolytica, than that of DS. These findings suggest that the enhanced pathology in BHS lungs is due to defective clearance of M. haemolytica from the lungs.  相似文献
