AIM: To investigate a possible interaction between lolitrem B and ergovaline by comparing the incidence and severity of ryegrass staggers in sheep grazing ryegrass (Lolium perenne) containing lolitrem B or ryegrass containing both lolitrem B and ergovaline.
METHODS: Ninety lambs, aged approximately 6 months, were grazed on plots of perennial ryegrass infected with either AR98 endophyte (containing lolitrem B), standard endophyte (containing lolitrem B and ergovaline) or no endophyte, for up to 42 days from 2 February 2010. Ten lambs were grazed on three replicate plots per cultivar. Herbage samples were collected for alkaloid analysis and lambs were scored for ryegrass staggers (scores from 0–5) weekly during the study. Any animal which was scored ≥4 was removed from the study.
RESULTS: Concentrations of lolitrem B did not differ between AR98 and standard endophyte-infected pastures during the study period (p=0.26), and ergovaline was present only in standard endophyte pastures. Ryegrass staggers was observed in sheep grazing both the AR98 and standard endophyte plots, with median scores increasing in the third week of the study. Prior to the end of the 42-day grazing period, 22 and 17 animals were removed from the standard endophyte and AR98 plots, respectively, because their staggers scores were ≥4. The cumulative probability of lambs having scores ≥4 did not differ between animals grazing the two pasture types (p=0.41).
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: There was no evidence for ergovaline increasing the severity of ryegrass staggers induced by lolitrem B. In situations where the severity of ryegrass staggers appears to be greater than that predicted on the basis of concentrations of lolitrem B, the presence of other tremorgenic alkaloids should be investigated. 相似文献
Nitrogen (N) uptake and loss in leachate from a pulse of 15N-labelled synthetic cow urine applied to a pumice soil were compared in a glasshouse lysimeter experiment among the grass species, Agrostis capillaris , Dactylis glomerata , Phalaris aquatica , Lolium multiflorum , L . perenne and a L . multiflorum/A. capillaris mixture. In addition, four L. perenne treatments investigated the effect of infection by Neotyphodium lolii strains. Leachate volumes and leachate nitrate concentrations were measured. At final harvest 24 weeks after sowing, dry matter (DM) mass of shoots and roots, plant N and 15N contents, soil residual mineral N, and root diameters and lengths were measured. Endophyte had no effect on plant or nitrate variables. Lysimeters planted with L . perenne (pooled endophyte treatments) leached 48 mg of NO3-N compared with <3 mg N for the other grasses. Recovery of 15N was highest in A. capillaris (0·99), followed by D. glomerata and P. aquatica (0·89), the L . multiflorum / A. capillaris mixture (0·87), L . multiflorum (0·60) and L . perenne (0·44). Low 15N recoveries and high leaching losses from L . perenne were associated with low plant and root masses of DM and low rooting depth. High aerial mass of DM, root systems extending below 20 cm and high root masses of DM in lysimeters with A. capillaris , P. aquatica and D. glomerata contributed to a high rate of nitrate interception by these species and low leachate losses. The L . multifloru m/ A. capillaris mixture was intermediate between the two species for most of the variables measured. 相似文献
This study investigated the effects of crown rust (caused by Puccinia coronata f.sp. lolii) in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) on plant growth and interference ability in the post‐epidemic generation. Rust‐infected Italian ryegrass plants produced seeds with lower weights than healthy plants (on average proportionately 0·36 lower). Furthermore, the early seedling vigour of plants from rust‐infected parents was reduced by 0·50 compared with seed from healthy parents. Under disease‐free conditions in the post‐epidemic generation, mature plants from rust‐infected parents produced 0·13 less shoot dry weight, 0·15 fewer tillers, 0·11 fewer leaves and 0·25 less leaf area than plants from healthy parents. As such, the effects of crown rust in Italian ryegrass persisted for at least one post‐epidemic generation. Under rust‐infected conditions in the post‐epidemic generation, however, the difference in performance between plants from healthy and rust‐infected parents was minimal. This suggests that any advantage plants gain from having healthy parents, compared with rust‐infected parents, might be lost when the post‐epidemic generation is grown under conditions of rust infection. Irrespective of rust infection in the post‐epidemic generation, the magnitude of intra‐specific interference was greater in monocultures of Italian ryegrass from healthy parents than in those from rust‐infected parents. However, the magnitude of inter‐specific interference and the relative interference ability of plants of rust‐infected and healthy parents did not differ. The implications of these results to plant ecology are discussed. 相似文献
