Aspalathus linearis is a commercially important plant species endemic to the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa and is used to produce a herbal tea known as rooibos tea. Symbiotic interactions between A. linearis and soil bacteria play an important role in the survival of Aspalathus plants in the highly nutrient-poor, acidic fynbos soil. The aim of this study was to characterize and compare rhizosphere and bulk soil bacterial communities associated with natural and commercially grown A. linearis, as well as the effect of seasonal changes on these communities. Bacterial communities were characterized using high throughput amplicon sequencing, and their correlations with soil chemical properties were investigated. The N-fixing bacterial community was characterized using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Acidobacteria were the most dominant bacterial phyla detected in this study. Highly similar bacterial communities were associated with natural and commercially grown plants. Significant differences in the bacterial community were observed between rhizosphere and bulk soils collected in the dry season, while no significant differences were detected in the wet season. This study provides insights into bacterial community structure and potential factors shaping bacterial community structure with commercially important A. linearis.  相似文献

The effect of pollen of two wild pistachio species (Pistacio atlantica and Pistado mutica), two cultivated (Pistado vera, cvs ‘Momtaz’ and ‘Soltani') and a control (open pollinated) was compared on nut development and quality of three commercially grown cultivars (P. vera cvs. ‘Owhadi’, ‘Kalleh‐ghuchi’, and ‘Momtaz'). The pollen source had no effect on final fruit set and fruit weight. Pollen of wild pistachio species reduced kernel weight, number of split nuts, and increased percentages of blank nuts of three commercially grown pistachio cultivars. ‘Owhadi’ had the lowest nut weight and highest percentages of blank nuts. The highest percentages of split nut was observed on the cultivar ‘Momtaz.  相似文献

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry approach was employed to evaluate the use of metabolite patterns to differentiate fruit from six commercially grown apple cultivars harvested in 2008. Principal component analysis (PCA) of apple fruit peel and flesh data indicated that individual cultivar replicates clustered together and were separated from all other cultivar samples. An independent metabolomics investigation with fruit harvested in 2003 confirmed the separate clustering of fruit from different cultivars. Further evidence for cultivar separation was obtained using a hierarchical clustering analysis. An evaluation of PCA component loadings revealed specific metabolite classes that contributed the most to each principal component, whereas a correlation analysis demonstrated that specific metabolites correlate directly with quality traits such as antioxidant activity, total phenolics, and total anthocyanins, which are important parameters in the selection of breeding germplasm. These data sets lay the foundation for elucidating the metabolic basis of commercially important fruit quality traits.  相似文献

Summary Landraces of barley and tough rachis genotypes selected from natural crosses of ssp.spontaneum withssp. vulgare were evaluated in Cyprus under rainfed conditions with the best commercially grown grain varieties. Landraces, eliminated from cultivation around 40 years ago, gave grain yields comparable to those to the best commercially grown varieties, Athenais and Kantara. Also, selected genotypes from the natural hybrids gave grain yields approaching those of Athenais and Kantara, in spite of the fact that human interference was limited only to visual individual plant selection in natural habitats, followed by the evaluation of 44 genotypes in the present studies. Locally adapted landraces and selected genotypes from the natural hybrids expressed valuable measurable traits, such as 1000-grain weight, crude protein content, volume weight, lodging and disease resistance, which could be used in breeding programmes. The heading date of these 44 selected tough rachis genotypes was within a narrow range, which lies within the optimum range determined by long term studies for Cyprus. Furthermore, non-visible gene complexes for adaptation to moisture, heat and other stresses present in land races and natural hybrids could be exploited for breeding in semi-arid areas. These natural hybrids apparently contributed towards maintaining genes present in landraces which became extinct long time ago.  相似文献

Authentic samples of commercially produced organic and conventionally grown tomatoes, lettuces, and carrots were collected and analyzed for their delta15N composition in order to assemble datasets to establish if there are any systematic differences in nitrogen isotope composition due to the method of production. The tomato and lettuce datasets suggest that the different types of fertilizer commonly used in organic and conventional systems result in differences in the nitrogen isotope composition of these crops. A mean delta15N value of 8.1 per thousand was found for the organically grown tomatoes compared with a mean value of -0.1 per thousand for those grown conventionally. The organically grown lettuces had a mean value of 7.6 per thousand compared with a mean value of 2.9 per thousand for the conventionally grown lettuces. The mean value for organic carrots was not significantly different from the mean value for those grown conventionally. Overlap between the delta15N values of the organic and conventional datasets (for both tomatoes and lettuces) means that it is necessary to employ a statistical methodology to try and classify a randomly analyzed "off the shelf" sample as organic/conventional, and such an approach is demonstrated. Overall, the study suggests that nitrogen isotope analysis could be used to provide useful "intelligence" to help detect the substitution of certain organic crop types with their conventional counterparts. However, delta15N analysis of a "test sample" will not provide unequivocal evidence as to whether synthetic fertilizers have been used on the crop but could, for example, in a situation when there is suspicion that mislabeling of conventionally grown crops as "organic" is occurring, be used to provide supporting evidence.  相似文献

Phytase is used commercially to maximize phytic acid degradation and to decrease phosphorus levels in poultry and swine manure. To determine phytase content in edible mushrooms, basidiomata of Agaricus bisporus and three specialty mushrooms (Grifola frondosa, Lentinula edodes, and Pleurotus cornucopiae) and spent mushroom substrate (SMS) were surveyed. Enzyme activity ranged from 0.046 to 0.074 unit/g of tissue for four A. bisporus types (closed and open whites and closed and open browns) grown at The Pennsylvania State University's Mushroom Test Demonstration Facility (MTDF). The addition of various nutrient supplements to phase II mushroom production substrate did not alter phytase activity in A. bisporus. Portabella mushrooms (open brown) obtained from a commercial farm had significantly higher levels of phytase activity (0.211 unit/g of tissue) compared to A. bisporus grown at the MTDF. Of the specialty mushrooms surveyed, maitake (G. frondosa) had 20% higher phytase activity (0.287 unit/g of tissue) than commercial portabella mushrooms. The yellow oyster mushroom (P. cornucopiae) ranked second in level of phytase activity (0.213 unit/g of tissue). Shiitake (L. edodes) contained the least amount of phytase in basidiomata (0.107 unit/g of tissue). Post-crop steam treatment (60 degrees C, 24 h) of SMS reduced phytase activity from 0.074 to 0.018 unit/g. Phytase was partially purified from commercially grown portabella basidiomata 314-fold with an estimated molecular mass of 531 kDa by gel filtration chromatography. The optimum pH for activity was 5.5, but appreciable phytase activity was observed over the range of pH 5.0-8.0. Partially purified A. bisporus phytase was inactivated following a 10-min incubation at > or =60 degrees C.  相似文献

Abstract

The nutrition of cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.), commercially grown on a large scale on infertile sandy Spodosols at Besut, Malaysia, was evaluated based on the major element of the leaves composition from two fertilizer trials and from an independent field nutritional survey (1979–1981). Except for the sampling periods which represented four physiological stages of the crop, commercial fertilizers applied even up to 1.4 kg/ tree/year did not show significant changes in the five major elements in cashew tree leaves. However, the organic matter levels within the top 32 cm of the surface soil did show consistent positive correlations with each of the five major elements in leaves sampled from a nutritional survey. The significance of these foliar data is discussed in relation to the overall nutrition of cashew grown extensively on sandy infertile soils of Malaysia.  相似文献

Pulp and paper mills often burn wood waste to fuel their boilers. The ash from a Mississippi pulp mill boiler was evaluated for potential use as an amendment to peat moss-based greenhouse substrates for production of young tomato plants. Between 0 and 50% ash was added to a custom-blended peat moss-based substrate, and these were compared to a commercially available substrate without ash. Addition of ash increased substrate pH, conductivity (EC), bulk density and water holding capacity, while reducing airspace and average particle size. In general, tomato plants grown in 0–40% ash had similar growth indexes as plants grown in commercial substrate. Increasing amounts of ash decreased tomato shoot nitrogen (N), potassium (K), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) concentration, and increased concentrations of phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), sulfur (S), and boron (B). These results indicate that pulp mill ash has the potential to be used as a substrate component for greenhouse container production of tomato.  相似文献

The composition of glyphosate-tolerant (Roundup Ready) soybean 40-3-2 was compared with that of conventional soybean grown in Romania in 2005 as part of a comparative safety assessment program. Samples were collected from replicated field trials, and compositional analyses were performed to measure proximates (moisture, fat, ash, protein, and carbohydrates by calculation), fiber, amino acids, fatty acids, isoflavones, raffinose, stachyose, phytic acid, trypsin inhibitor, and lectin in grain as well as proximates and fiber in forage. The mean values for all biochemical components assessed for Roundup Ready soybean 40-30-2 were similar to those of the conventional control and were within the published range observed for commercial soybean. The compositional profile of Roundup Ready soybean 40-3-2 was also compared to that of conventional soybean varieties grown in Romania by calculating a 99% tolerance interval to describe compositional variability in the population of traditional soybean varieties already on the marketplace. These comparisons, together with the history of the safe use of soybean as a common component of animal feed and human food, lead to the conclusion that Roundup Ready soybean 40-3-2 is compositionally equivalent to and as safe and nutritious as conventional soybean varieties grown commercially.  相似文献

Butterhead lettuce (var. Gloria) were grown in an evaporatively cooled glasshouse using the nutrient film technique (NFT). During the day all plants received a complete nutrient solution (EC 2 dS/m). Treatments were imposed at night and included: complete nutrient solution (control); tap water (EC 0.19 dS/m); and calcium nitrate solutions containing either 100 mg Ca/L (EC 0.80 dS/m), or 200 mg Ca/L (EC 1.45 dS/m).

Tipburn occurred in the control and its incidence was reduced by the other treatments. This effect was associated with an increase in the concentration of calcium in new leaves, except in the water treatment. The night treatments did not affect the fresh weight of mature lettuce.

Circulation of either water or calcium nitrate (100 mg Ca/L) at night may, therefore, be a commercially acceptable means of reducing tipburn losses in lettuce crops grown using hydroponics.  相似文献

The composition of glyphosate-tolerant (Roundup Ready) corn event NK603 was compared with that of conventional corn grown in the United States in 1998 and in the European Union in 1999 to assess compositional equivalence. Grain and forage samples were collected from both replicated and nonreplicated field trials, and compositional analyses were performed to measure proximates, fiber, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamin E, nine minerals, phytic acid, trypsin inhibitor, and secondary metabolites in grain as well as proximates and fiber in forage. Statistical analysis of the data was conducted to assess statistical significance at the p < 0.05 level. The values for all of the biochemical components assessed for corn event NK603 were similar to those of the nontransgenic control or were within the published range observed for nontransgenic commercial corn hybrids. In addition, the compositional profile of Roundup Ready corn event NK603 was compared with that of traditional corn hybrids grown in Europe by calculating a 99% tolerance interval to describe compositional variability in the population of traditional corn varieties in the marketplace. These comparisons, together with the history of the safe use of corn as a common component of animal feed and human food, support the conclusion that Roundup Ready corn event NK603 is compositionally equivalent to, and as safe and nutritious as, conventional corn hybrids grown commercially today.  相似文献

A high‐speed dual‐wavelength sorter was tested for removing corn contaminated in the field with aflatoxin and fumonisin. To achieve accurate sorting, single kernel reflectance spectra (500–1,700 nm) were analyzed to select the optimal pair of optical filters to detect mycotoxin‐contaminated corn during high‐speed sorting. A routine, based on discriminant analysis, was developed to select the two absorbance bands in the spectra that would give the greatest classification accuracy. In a laboratory setting, and with the kernels stationary, absorbances at 750 and 1,200 nm could correctly identify >99% of the kernels as aflatoxin‐contaminated (>100 ppb) or uncontaminated. A high‐speed sorter was tested using the selected filter pair for corn samples inoculated with Aspergillus flavus; naturally infested corn grown in central Illinois; and naturally infested, commercially grown and harvested corn from eastern Kansas (2002 harvest). For the Kansas corn, the sorter was able to reduce aflatoxin levels by 81% from an initial average of 53 ppb, while fumonisin levels in the same grain samples were reduced an average of 85% from an initial level of 17 ppm. Similar reductions in mycotoxin levels were observed after high‐speed sorting of A. flavus inoculated and naturally mold‐infested corn grown in Illinois.  相似文献

Chrysanthemum X morifolium ’Bright Yellow May Shoesmith’ was grown as a cut flower crop in rockwool slabs in various methods to test different cultural and rockwool options. Direct planting of unrooted and calloused cuttings led to deleterious water stresses in spite of a commercially prohibitive input of labor for syringing. Planting of partially rooted cuttings was successful in terms of flower production but required excessive labor. Satisfactory and equal results were obtained from 1) inserting cuttings rooted in rockwool cubes into the slab such that the cube top was either flush or 1.3 cm above the slab surface, 2) applying nutrients 1 or 3 times per day, and 3) a horizontal or verticle fiber orientation in the slab. Nutrient accumulation in plants of all treatments were in satisfactory ranges and did not account for observed differences in growth.  相似文献

Soil managements other than frequent cultivation are often needed for orchard production on poorly structured soils. Irrigated peach trees (Prunus persica L. Batsch), grown for nine years under the Tatura system of soil management described, produced consistently at least three times the average yield of trees grown commercially on similar soil types. The Tatura system of soil management included soil modification to 60 cm depth, hilled surface soil, subsequent non-cultivation, straw mulch and frequent irrigation. The structure of the deepened surface soil approached that required for maximum root growth as specified in earlier work, and was maintained for nine years.The surface soil remained stable (slaking percentage <10) allowing high rates of infiltration. Macroporosity in the surface soil to a depth of 37 cm at nine years was 14% compared with the standard of 20% suggested by earlier work. However, oxygen concentrations exceeded 10% in the modified layer within 24 h of irrigation. For most of the nine years, penetrometer resistance to a depth of 37 cm was below or close to 1 MPa for soil at ?10 kPa matric potential. The root length to 60 cm depth was 60% greater than that of peach trees in an adjacent cultivated orchard.  相似文献

Most claims that organic produce is better tasting and more nutritious than nonorganic (conventional) produce are largely unsubstantiated. This is due mainly to a lack of rigor in research studies matching common production variables of both production systems, such as microclimate, soil type, fertilizer elemental concentration, previous crop, irrigation source and application, plant age, and cultivar. The aforementioned production variables common to both production systems were matched for comparison of Texas commercially grown conventional and certified organic Rio Red red-fruited grapefruit. Whole grapefruits from each production system were harvested between 800 and 1000 h at commercial early (November), mid- (January), and late season (March) harvest periods for three consecutive years. Within each harvest season, conventional and organic whole fruits were compared for marketable qualities (fruit weight, specific gravity, peel thickness, and peel color), and juices were compared for marketable qualities (specific gravity, % juice, and color), human health-bioactive compounds (minerals, ascorbic acid, lycopene, sugars, pectin, phenols, and nitrates), and consumer taste intensity and overall acceptance. Conventional fruit was better colored and higher in lycopene, and the juice was less tart, lower in the bitter principle naringin, and better accepted by the consumer panel than the organic fruit. Organic fruit had a commercially preferred thinner peel, and the juice was higher in ascorbic acid and sugars and lower in nitrate and the drug interactive furanocoumarins.  相似文献

To obtain basic knowledge about the relationship between the application of organic fertilizers and the δ15N values of leaves of organically grown tea plants, annual variations in the δ15N values of the tea leaves were investigated. Although variations did not immediately arise after the application of organic fertilizers, differences in the δ15N values between organic and conventional cultivations appeared basically after three years from the beginning of the organic cultivation except when an organic fertilizer with a low δ15N value was applied, and the variation depended on the δ15N values of the fertilizers. In addition, the effectiveness of the δ15N values as a practical indicator of organic teas was examined. The tea leaves collected from organic farms did not always have higher δ15N values than the commercially available nonorganic teas. This result demonstrates that it is not easy to discriminate organic teas from nonorganic teas simply by their δ15N values.  相似文献

The effects of elevated temperature, carbon dioxide, and water stress on the isoflavone content of seed from a dwarf soybean line [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] were determined, using controlled environment chambers. Increasing the temperature from 18 degrees C during seed development to 23 degrees C decreased total isoflavone content by about 65%. A further 5 degrees C increase to 28 degrees C decreased the total isoflavone content by about 90%. Combining treatments at elevated temperature with elevated CO(2) (700 ppm) and water stress to determine the possible consequences of global climate change on soybean seed isoflavone content indicated that elevated CO(2) at elevated temperatures could partially reverse the effects of temperature on soybean seed isoflavone content. The addition of drought stress to plants grown at 23 degrees C and elevated CO(2) returned the total isoflavone levels to the control values obtained at 18 degrees C and 400 ppm CO(2). The promotive effects of drought and elevated CO(2) at 23 degrees C on the 6' '-O-malonygenistin and genistin levels were additive. The individual isoflavones often had different responses to the various growth conditions during seed maturation, modifying the proportions of the principal isoflavones. Therefore, subtle changes in certain environmental factors may change the isoflavone content of commercially grown soybean, altering the nutritional values of soy products.  相似文献

草菇(Volvariella voluog,e曲,又名中国蘑菇,是一种生长于中国和东南亚的重要经济食用菌。本文基于本实验室的草菇基因组测序结果,分析了草菇基因组中的tRNA情况。草菇基因组的302个框架中,共发现了177个tRNA基因,其中有7个可能的假基因,有2个携带硒代半胱氨酸,一个抑制性tRNA基因和一个未知的异型结构tRNA。除了上述11个特殊的tRNA基因外,166个tRNA可按反密码子类型分成47类。与其它5种担子菌的基因组tRNA比较,草菇的tRNA数量处于第4位,少于鬼伞、裂褶菌、灵芝,多于双孢蘑菇和平菇。通过比较分析草菇及这5种大型真菌的基因组tRNA编码情况,首次报道了几种食用菌tRNA遵守修正的摆动假说的情况。另外,草菇的同功受体tRNA非编码子序列也具有差异性,对tRNA的分析将有助于进一步研究草菇的进化。  相似文献

Loquat [Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.] is a minor fruit-tree species which is grown commercially in the Mediterranean region. Given the current increase in loquat cultivation, there is a need to define basic crop-management procedures in order to obtain high yields and optimal fruit quality. The aim of this work was to develop a routine for loquat farmers to follow, in order to know the nutritional status of trees in order to establish a rational fertilization regime, and to correct nutrient deficiencies as soon as possible. This paper reports three experiments aimed at establishing: 1) leaf type, 2) time of leaf sampling and 3) the standard leaf nutrient levels as a function of maximum yield. Results indicate that the summer flush leaves could be the most representative of nutritional status. Thus, the most appropriate time to sample leaves for analysis is in summer (beginning of August to the end of September), taking mature 3–4 month old leaves.  相似文献

One hundred and fifty bread wheat lines and 50 other lines of small-grain cereals (spelt, durum wheat, Triticum monococcum, Triticum dicoccum, oats, rye, and barley) were selected for diversity in their geographical origin, age, and characteristics. They were grown on a single site in Hungary in 2004-2005, harvested, milled, and analyzed for a range of phytochemicals (tocols, sterols, phenolic acids, folates, alkylresorcinols) and fiber components that are considered to have health benefits. Detailed analyses of these components in the different species are reported in a series of accompanying papers. The present paper discusses the comparative levels of the bioactive components in the different species, showing differences in both ranges and mean amounts. Furthermore, detailed comparisons of the bread wheat lines show that it is possible to identify lines in which high levels of phytochemicals and dietary fiber components are combined with good yield and processing quality. This means that commercially competitive lines with high levels of bioactive components are a realistic goal for plant breeders.  相似文献
